miscellaneous (risky trope) A show changes genres mid way

The 100: the show starts as a somewhat grounded post apocalypse where humans who have taken refuge in a space station return to earth after it has become inhabitable again and resources on the space station run out. At first the show is about survival in a hostile environment. It slowly introduces more and more sci fi elements. At first, it's an Aİ that wants control over humanity. Towards the end of the show, the main characters have traveled throughout the galaxy, met humans from other planets, some of which have settled among ruins of ancient alien species, where they try to contact more advanced alien species in order to achieve "transcendence": rid humans of their physical bodies and become a more advanced lifeform.

AOT: this one is less gradual than the 100 and the change comes after a massive plot twist. The first 3 seasons of the show are about a relatively primitive society of humans who live inside humongous walls. Outside the walls are titans: giant monstrous creatures which hunt and devour humans. After a big plot twist and reveal, the society finds out that there is a whole bigger world out there, and the rest of the world is plotting to genocide them. They quickly industrialize after this discovery and wage war against other countries.

Two movies that coincidentally both taking place during World War 2.

Life is Beautiful starts off as a comedic Italian film about a guy trying to impress a woman he loves. But then it gets into horror as he and his family are sent to a concentration camp and he is trying to save his wife and son.

He even sacrifices his life while pretending to do a funny walk to assure his son that nothing bad will happen. The camp gets liberated and the son gets to ride on a tank with his narration implying he remembers his father's sacrifice.

Jojo Rabbit at the start is about a kid who is training to be a Nazi and talks with his imaginary friend Adolf. But later it gets darker with his imaginary friend Adolf becoming less of a friendly guy and more like Hitler the evil bastard. Jojo and Elsa are saved by Captain K who found out Rosie was killed by the Gestapo for being part of the German Resistance, and it gets sadder from there.

Taika Watiti can be a very good director if you catch him in a moment where he's not high as a kite and making butt jokes

Basically if it's his own project he had a hand in developing he tends to do well. If it's someone else's work he's brought in to work on he just slaps a load of jokes on top of the script and phones it in.

I honestly thought it was still trying to be a comedy up to that point. Not sure if that was false hope or me being blind.

It was an odd choice to suddenly add a flying woman to the movie

When I saw the first few promos/ads for Jojo Rabbit I thought Hitler was played by Fred Armisen.

When I finally got around to watching it I was almost angry they were able to juxtapose such ridiculous silliness with so much pathos.

😭 I cried all four times I've seen it and for the sliver I heard while I was doing work in a room where a history class had it on.

We watched La vita è bella in high school (Italian lesson) and I remember all of us spending the rest of the day in a really somber mood. Beautiful but heart-wrenching film.

La Vita è Bella is the only movie that has made me cry. It is an absolute masterpiece

We watched this in 8th grade, and I haven't seen it since. Over 25 years later, and I still remember how gut wrenching it was. Definitely a good way to show teens the true horrors of the Holocaust.
