GAME THREAD - Fever @ Aces - Win or Go Home
A'ja Wilson
“This was a game they needed to win, so their urgency was a lot higher, the intensity was a lot higher," Wilson said after Tuesday’s 99-89 loss that evened the best-of-three series at 1. "I don't think they guarded me any differently, it was just the sense of urgency they played with kind of had us on our heels, the same way we had them in Game 1. So we'll be better, we'll adjust and we'll come back with a better sense of urgency, effort and heart.”
Caitlin Clark
“I thought we adjusted well on defense, and we're going to have make more adjustments because they're going to go back and watch the film and try to exploit what we did,” Clark said. “But overall, I thought we played a lot harder (than Game 1) and we're going to need to take it up another level (in Game 3).”
Clark and Hammon each logged complaints about the officiating in Game 2 in what amounted to an early lobbying effort for Game 3.
Hammon thought the refs allowed too much contact in Game 2.
“I thought where they got very stifling (defensively) was our point of attack — a lot of grabbing, hand-checking,” Hammon said. “I understand it's the playoffs, but it shouldn't turn into the NFL, either. I think the refs have a (tough job), I wouldn't want to be one.”
Clark was more upset with the inconsistency of the calls. She fouled out with 2:45 to play and also was called for a technical in the first half, one she said she deserved.
“You call an offensive foul on me and then I'm getting hit the same way on the defensive end, and it's a foul on me,” she said. “Like it doesn't make sense. They just have to be better. It's the playoffs, like either call it all the time or don't, but be consistent.”

Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson will not face league repercussions for confronting a fan in Game 2 of the WNBA first-round playoff series and will be available for a decisive Game 3 against the Indiana Fever on Thursday night.
According to a league source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to speak publicly on the matter, following an in-game review, the on-court game officials determined that A’ja Wilson was in the court area – what is known as a player escape lane – adjacent to the stanchion rather than the stands. Based on that determination, officials decided there was no cause for an ejection.
The league took into consideration of the intensity of the playoffs and plans to stress safety to its players.
On Tuesday, Wilson was fouled late in the fourth quarter by Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. After noticing a fan jeering, Wilson left the court and approached the fan in the second row of courtside baseline seats at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Wilson received a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. According to the 2026 WNBA rulebook, she was subject to being ejected by officials for the act.
“Any coach, player, or trainer who deliberately enters the spectator stands during the game will be automatically ejected,” according to the rules, which also state the incident will be reported to the league commissioner. The rules also specify the stands as starting with the first row of fans.
Aces players moved in to stand between Wilson and the fan, including bench players Kierstan Bell and Kalani Brown, who crossed the court. WNBA rules state that during any altercation, players who are not active in the game “must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined.”
The WNBA spokesperson declined to make available to The Athletic Sue Blauch, the WNBA referee performance and development, and Monty McCutchen, NBA VP/head of referee development and training, to comment on the game’s officiating crew and its calls.
Wilson told reporters after the Aces’ 99-89 loss that she approached the fan because she felt “disrespected” and said the man had moved toward her.
“If I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone. That is unacceptable. You don’t step towards me … and point at me. I’m not for that s—,” Wilson said.
Video from fans on social media shows the man standing at his seat with other fans preceding the foul by Cunningham near the free-throw line. Wilson walked away from the play and looked at the fan, who was pointing at her and had stepped to the side of his row-ending seat. He was several feet away from the baseline as he yelled and pointed at Wilson after the foul, and another fan pulled him into his seat as Wilson walked over yelling back at him.
He was temporarily removed by arena security, but after determining he did not violate the Fever’s fan code of conduct, he was allowed to return to his seat. After the game, Wilson stated surprise that he was allowed to return.
“Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses,” the Fever said in a statement. “Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct; the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed.”
This WNBA season has broken several attendance and television audience records but has also featured multiple high-profile situations involving fans. Throughout the league, players have also complained about increased hostility from fans, particularly through online messages.
In August, Aces guard Jackie Young complained about two Fever fans at Gainbridge, saying they were “chirping” throughout the game and crossed a line. Arena security investigated and found no wrongdoing.
After Cunningham stated she opposed transgender athletes in women’s sports in an ESPN article, small demonstrations — both in support of Cunningham and counter-demonstrations in support of trans rights — popped up around Fever games. Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from a Fever game in Chicago after stepping toward the court during a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud, and he was later banned from the arena.
Fans at another game between the Dream and Fever in Atlanta were asked by security to change their shirts because of the messaging on them. A statement from a WNBA spokesperson later said that shouldn’t have happened. Seattle Storm owner Celeste Keaton was also suspended for five games and fined by the league for an exchange with young fans who wore shirts depicting XX and XY chromosomes.

Question Angel Reese has won a major WNBA award (DPOY) in her very first year with ATL. Sky once again missed playoffs. Where does the Reese trade rank amongst the worst in WNBA history?
After the Angel Reese trade, Courtney Vandersloot said that she was looking forward to the Chicago Sky getting back to their “winning identity” without her.
Angel has now won DPOY in her very first year as a Dream and is now headed to the semi-finals.
After years of chronic underinvestment and an unwillingness to seek out top free agents, the Sky put together a star-studded roster consisting of veterans such as Dijonai Carrington, Azurà Stevens, Skylar Diggins, Natasha Cloud and Courtney Vandersloot, as well as promising young players such as Rickea Jackson, Gabriela Jacquez and Sydney Taylor. Despite this, the Sky went 16-28 and failed to make playoffs.
Furthermore, many of these newly acquired vets, such as Skylar Diggins, have expressed discontent with the Sky organization and its management - fuelling speculation that some could be on their way out of the organization, thus adding to the long trail of disgruntled stars leaving the organization over the course of the past several years.
Where does this trade rank amongst the worst in WNBA history now that we’ve had a full season to see the fallout?

Props to league vets gettin' it done
In watching the playoffs, I've got to shout out some of the W's oldest vets. I have been so impressed with Dewanna Bonner, Alysha Clark, Tiffany Hayes, Rebecca Gardner, Kayla McBride (I know she was off these playoffs), and I'll throw in Odyssey Sims. You could be a hater and pick apart any one of them for limitations, but let's take the high road, and give them props.

Wild possibility
There is a small chance that the 1,2, and 3 seeds will be eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Clearly that will be historic. A lot of folks will say this is why we need best of 5 game first rounds.
I disagree. Having a best of 3 gives a performance on demand requirement. Best of 5 or best of 7 is performance on average.
Anyways, gonna be fun to watch.

Sonia Citron in two playoff losses to the Atlanta Dream: 25 ppg / 6.5 rpg / 50% FG% / 50% 3P% / 68% TS%
That’s it. That’s the post. Congrats to the Dream, they were clearly the better team, but damn Sonia showed up in the bright lights (which shouldn’t be a surprise for the clutch queen)! The Mystics future is exciting (but if they don’t acquire a PG in some way during the offseason, we riot)!
