Classic Era The WoW: Forever announcement was a disservice to the classic community and it absolutely destroyed Classic as a whole

The announcement for forever was warranted but the release date is way too sudden. The blizzcon weekend was supposed to be exciting, but instead the sudden release date of Forever actively killed TBC, only 3 weeks into one of the most exciting patches of the entire franchise. It took less than 2 weeks for guilds to disband because, "what's the point?" This all feels really bad..and this era is by the darkest that I've ever seen the game become

Edit: I just want to say that this has been a huge boost to my reddit score and your saltiness has been a huge help. Thank you all <3

Classic Era Like Forever? Go play Classic first

I'm a 20 year old WoW veteran and after the announcement of Forever I decided to sub for one month, see where my characters are and try Classic as well:

  1. Retail is EZ mode, press highlighted buttons and you will progress. Absolutely no challenge, story is ass.
  2. Classic - rolled a Priest - cannot finish the quest in Murloc camp in Elvyn Forest, cannot take on more than 2 mobs of my level.

This is all with SoD 150% experience boost. I'm not saying this is bad, but when Preach started BSing today how "it was always easy!" - no bro, it wasn't. You are a tryhard with a dedicated group of friends - sure, it's easy. Otherwise - get ready for pain.

Classic Era How do you beat Paladin as Rogue?

It feels like they can just eat my stunlock- hoj, heal to full and crank me. This is before they even need tools like bop, bubble, LoH etc.

Is this just a losing matchup? Does Forever include any changes that shift this matchup one way or the other?

Classic Era The old skybox was far more beautiful to me.

The old sky box had a far better graphic style and more cohesive fidelity and conveyed a better emotional feeling than the new skybox which just looks like any other modern game to me. The old skybox felt distinctly warcraft like. The colouration is more blocky and bold and the way the mountains silhouette create a starkness.

Classic Era Everyone is thinking wrong about how armor works in WoW, here is a simple intuitive explainer that focus on "hits to kill" instead

Using real math in an example

Let's say you have 0 armor and 5500 HP

A level 60 mob that hits you for 100 takes 55 hits to kill you

How armor works:

  • Each extra 100 points of armor translates to AN EXTRA HIT until you are dead from this example mob

Once you see it like this it is so intuitive

  • 100 armor = 56 hits to kill
  • 200 armor = 57 hits to kill
  • ...
  • 1000 armor = 65 hits to kill
  • 2000 armor = 75 hits to kill
  • 5,500 armor = 110 hits to kill
  • 16,500 armor = 220 hits to kill (75% damage reduction cap, extra armor past this does nothing)

People only think of the "diminishing returns" (receiving one extra hit when you die in 20 hits is more impactful than when you die in 100 hits), but that is missing the core aspect of the armor formula in wow: It always adds that extra hit linearly!

Fun fact, resistances don't work linearly for magic damage, instead each point of resistance yields growing returns compared to the previous one in terms of hits to kill.

Hope this explains it well!

---

EDIT: Extra explainer for magic resistances, which are different than armor

Let's say you have 0 fire resistance and 3000 HP

As an example, a level 60 mob's fireball hits you for 100, so it takes 30 hits to kill you

How resistance works: Each 100 points of resistance removes the same 25% of the fireball's original damage But that makes every 100 worth MORE than the last

  • 0 resistance = 100 damage per hit = 30 hits to kill
  • 100 resistance = 75 damage per hit = 40 hits to kill (+10)
  • 200 resistance = 50 damage per hit = 60 hits to kill (+20)
  • 300 resistance = 25 damage per hit = 120 hits to kill (+60) - 75% cap

Armor always adds the same extra hits. Resistance adds more and more, until cap.

That's why for Ragnaros in SoD you wanted to stack tons of fire res with each heat level.

---

EDIT2: The numbers I used are actual real numbers using the official formulas, and not arbitrary. They are illustrative of how it would be in-game in classic wow.

Classic Era Is vanilla wow high fantasy or dark fantasy?

I ask because it's a mix of lightning and fantastical creatures and all that, but then you have the grit and magic that isn't world ending or having more grounded enemies to deal with.

Classic Era For the hardcore players of 2006. What was it like having full T3?

2006, when most people didn’t even hit 60, and a very small number people even raided. What was it like being in that .1% with full Naxx40 gear? What was it like full clearing or at least making it to Sapph in Naxx40

Classic Era i got into WoW through Retail and BFA. why should i try out Classic?

Bit of a Worgen main, the whole werewolf with weapons thing i really like.

i mostly do Dungeons and Battlegrounds, Raids if I'm lucky (my guild is dead now)

But, been wondering what made Classic WoW so special and why should i try it out?

ok maybe i need to be more clear. i have a demanding job, and i don't want to try something unless i really know what it's about. i also don't have a sub

damn what's with the replies, who hurt you?

Classic Era Lvl 47 warrior and I'm a disaster at tanking - can someone break down what I should be doing?

WoW classic, pre-lvl 50 dungeons. Here's what happens:

I start in defensive stance > shoot gun to pull > sunder armor > someone else attacks enemy > the enemy runs to them > I chase after enemy and taunt > they attack me again > I turn around to deal with other enemies > they're all attacking healer / people who did AOE> I run back to those enemies > I have no rage > everyone's being attacked except me > the healers out of mana > we barely survive

My base level understanding is that I need to maintain aggro and the simplest way to do it is sunder armor then revenge when it's up

Maybe this is misguided but I don't utilize many of my shield attacks and sometimes don't even use a shield since my issue is aggro and not amount of health / armor.

How do I become a better tank / person?

Classic Era New Vanilla servers?

When can we expect new Vanilla servers? I mean servers as they were in 2019, before Chronoboons and the reworked PvP system. Following these threads and the Blizzard forums, it seems that a decent portion of us would like to relive that experience on fresh servers.

WoW is a seasonal game with a raid release schedule, and on a server that has lived past its raid release schedule, there are no new raid challenges to look forward to. The game is then completed, in the sense that there will always be players with seriously overpowered gear, making any raid a complete steamroll. On the PvP side, the late-game power creep creates a massive power imbalance between newcomers and those who copied their characters before TBC.

Questioning the design decisions behind Forever is often met with, "Then just play Era," but Era has now been running for more than eight years. A broader Classic community could be served by new Vanilla servers (with progressive itemization?).

Classic Era New player, that wants to switch off hunter Druid or warrior?

Hey all. Im new to wow and currently have a lvl 25 hunter and am wanting to switch classes. I kind of just find hunter to be boring personally. Just hiding behind a pet and mostly using autos. I also kind of get annoyed with the ammo system.

Anyway I want to try a melee based dps class. Something that’s tanky. However I don’t want to pick something that’s super difficult to play for a total noob like myself. I found that the bear form Druid seems pretty cool, and having a heal spell would be good to have for a new player like me. But doing a hybrid dps/tank build warrior seems very enticing to me.

What do you guys recommend?

Classic Era The “Favorite game of all time” discussion

I have played wow since 2007 when I was around 13 years old. Since that time, I’ve absolutely spent more time in the world of Warcraft than any other game, with likely only RuneScape even coming remotely close, but likely still hundreds if not thousands of hours away.

Whenever the conversation comes up about “what’s your favorite game” however, for some reason world of Warcraft never comes to mind. Does anyone else experience this?

Are we conditioned to reserve that slot for big special single player experiences? Am I just projecting my own thought onto the idea?

Whenever I ask someone or someone asks me, it seems like the vast majority of the time people respond with exactly that, a single player game. Skyrim, Witcher, Zelda, TLOU, The list goes on but you get the point.

I had this realization today that even though the experiences I’ve had with those games was special, the answer just defacto has to be world of Warcraft. It’s the only game that I come back to over and over and spend days on days on days playing without anything else coming close.

As I type this rant and question, I guess a reason for this came to mind. Perhaps the reason those single player games come to mind is because the game itself is the star of the show and the experience, and in a lot of ways - with wow - it’s more (funny enough) the “friends you made along the way” that contribute to those hours played.

Thoughts? Where does wow stand in your favorites of all time? Do you have the same experience where that answer seems to default to a big single player experience despite this big elephant in the room?

Classic Era What would you consider an "Achievment" in Classic Wow?

I recently began playing WoW after trying out the Forever Beta. I decided to also check out Classic and Retail to get an idea of how Forever is different from Classic and also to get an idea of what came before Forever.

While playing Classic I've heard all kinds of stories and seen a lot of things people consider to be a "must do" for someone playing WoW for the first time. So, I wanted to ask if you made a list of Achievements that people should strive to accomplish or experience at least once, what would they be? This could be getting an item, a quest line, a social interaction, etc. I'm also curious what someone would consider to be a REAL accomplishment that would be somewhat impressive, especially now that WoW is somewhat solved, being a 15ish year old game.

Classic Era ERA FOREVER

What happened to this sub? Where do I talk about era these days? Why is forever even part of this if it has its own sub and is clearly not classic?_?
