Sad Girl Dinner ⛈️ AI stole my job today

Post image

(Chicken-bacon sandwich)

Three hours ago, my manager had arranged a meeting with me. On the way to the meeting, my manager seemed shook. When I opened the door to the meeting room, a representative from HR was sat in there. That’s when I realised what kind of meeting I was going into.

Basically, my role is going to be “fully automised”, as they put it. Well, good riddance, and good luck with that.

I am sad today because I formed friendships at this company. My best friend works there. She was also there with open arms the moment I needed it. Right afterwards. No matter what happens now, I know she is a keeper.

I don’t know what to do now. We’ve just bought a house and are dependent on a stable income. I’m sad and deeply frustrated.

Good luck to the rest of my team, and the rest of this industry. I was just the first one of us to be treated with this kind of farewell.

A lot of the times they use AI as an excuse. I’m sure they already found an offshore worker at 1/10th the price.

Hope they regret it and you find better

This! I was laid off from my job last year and now I'm working with an offshore company doing the exact same thing. The funny part is that they pay me more.

It’s just like the late 2000s firings. We know AI can’t do this work. It still needs human handlers. But to save face in a recession while keeping profits up to appease the board’s bank accounts, we are letting you go because of AI. Just like they did with this shit back then and continue to… I work DoD and own but come from comm and design and remember when marketing teams became one graphic designer. Who was probably the intern… if it wasn’t outsourced to move it from payroll to vendor…

Also, of course the temple kings would create a being they don’t have to pay or offer any benefits to do work. Of course.

How did you work at an off shore company

12

u/Starlesseyes598 APPROVED✨ 2h ago

Many of the Indian WITCH companies have US offices and they do employ Americans, but they normally don’t keep the Americans long (because they are expensive). It’s usually a knowledge transfer/ training situation and then they will be let go once their Indian counterparts are up to speed. At least that’s how it works at my current employer who outsources some work to a WITCH company.

13

u/Visual_Astronomer_38 double chipmunk cheeked up 3h ago

They were just hiring and I applied. Its a global Indian company.

Give it a year and they’ll be hiring "consultants" at triple the price to fix whatever mess the new system creates.

15

u/Jucadrinkingtea APPROVED✨ 6h ago

I second that. They keep pouring money on those algorithms and they're not working properly to be ever deployed and then you find out they offshored entire sections of the company. That's called a recession. :D

This is very thinly veiled racism.

"Offshore workers", as you call them, have every right to American jobs as you do.

No it’s not lol. My dad’s whole IT department got offshored in Canada. It’s reality of what’s going on.

Why should others get jobs instead of country residents? Because the billion dollar corps can save millions more?

off-shore as in people who aren't citizens. Off-shore and migrant workers are different things. It's perfectly fine to hire these people. But it's not done for their benefit; It's exploitative in nature. And other workers are replaced with no real reason other than to make room for these people.

Not when it comes to the security risks of offshoring. Companies that are trying to make a profit generally don’t offshore to countries that have strong regulatory environments.

I’m sorry to hear that… I hope that you were offered a severance package to stay afloat in the meantime.

If you don’t mind me asking, what was your role that got fully automated?

161

u/Difficult-Bug90 Delulu 8h ago

It was an administrative role. Don’t want to get too far into it as to not be recognised :)

I know that it is quite normal for roles like mine to go into extinction at the moment, but I am still sad, because I worked my ass off and actually liked my job.

Regarding the severance package, yes. Fortunately I am European, which also helps in this situation.

59

u/jamminatorr mouth full, gesturing wildly 7h ago

Ugh. The "automation" of administrative roles is just so frustrating. I find the higher level management roles truly do not understand that despite the role title being 'administrative' the amount of discretion and decision making that takes place everyday to cater to internal individuals, specific issues, vendors, the public, clients etc are huge. Admin is really important to the functioning of the company and how it treats people both internally and externally.

14

u/aurortonks APPROVED✨ 3h ago

Admins set the vibe for the office, keep everyone from boiling over, and bridge the gap between groups & divisions. Having an AI robot do that will remove any warmth and care that position requires and the office is going to suffer from it.

u/Osi32 🩵NB💙 7h ago

They’re making a mistake. I work in AI. Automation must be managed and the people who did the job are the ones who need to do it. The benefit of automation is parallelisation and scale, but it still needs people who know how things work correctly. Find a place that will value you and respect you.

yeah, this is the part companies seem to miss. if you’re automating a process, the people who actually know all the weird edge cases should be involved, otherwise you just end up automating mistakes at scale. hope OP lands somewhere that actually values that experience.

I'm quite sure I'm getting fired this year lol. You are right they asked me multiple times to help automate my job but they never mentioned what I will do after so I was like it's hard I'm not sure let's try to focus on something else. I've heard there is some big automatization going on with payment platform that is my main responsibility they didn't told me about so I'm 99% sure I'm out. I won't work for me to be fired and I hope it will backfire when they fuck something up in the proces but yes this take doesn't change a thing. You will be asked to automate your job and then they will let you go few extra months won't change a thing

Machine learning is a technology that has existed a long time, and has gotten much better the past 10-20years. It’s just a bunch of mathematics, nothing inherently evil about it

-8

My morals approve of holding people to higher standards in the hopes all of us can improve with time. I worked hard to find a job I’m proud to have.

9

u/BitchThatReads 🌈 Vagetarian 5h ago edited 3h ago

I think you don’t know enough about an individuals situation to be “holding people to higher standards” on reddit. The job market isn’t good enough to be shitting on someone for a job that you don’t even know if they want to work. I’ve been unemployed so long that if I was offered a job in AI that could financially support me I might take it. You don’t know peoples circumstances or responsibilities enough to pass judgement, and people need to make a living to support themselves and their families. Don’t tell someone to “just quit their job and find one that is better” unless you’re going to give them a job offer too.

My job is moving forward with AI use (which is failing miserably and costing the company a lot of money) and I'm looking for a way out ASAP (sadly job market is trash, but oh well)

1

u/ourpodcastisbest 🧂Salty By Nature 7h ago

I get you. I just did a similar change. I had a job that was really pushing for everyone to use as much AI as possible. I ended up finding something better where my boss is also against AI. It’s a much better place to work all around.

-6

u/Time-Cell9274 Feral Til Fed 7h ago

And some of us have actual responsibilities like families and homes or need our jobs for the health benefits. What a privileged and out of touch take - in this job market - to brag and say yeah I quit my job because my boss expected me to leverage ChatGPT to write an email.

4

u/ourpodcastisbest 🧂Salty By Nature 6h ago

It’s hilarious to assume I don’t have responsibilities and a family that relies on me to work. I didn’t even say how long it took to find a new job. It took time, but I put the effort in so I could work somewhere that didn’t make me feel sick walking into every day. I clearly said they wanted it leveraged in every part of the company, in every part of my job, including firing people and replacing them with ai and firing people to hire offshore employees for $3 an hour. You don’t know anything about my life. You’re just lashing out because I did the hard thing that you can’t or won’t do.

u/WarForMuffin Kitchen Witch 5h ago

Awesome that your job has health benefits, not all of us have that luxury, so... In your own words, what a privilege to brag about that /s
Jokes aside, not sure how productive that attitude is here, we're all trying to survive, just some people are willing to risk more for their values, others (like you) value other things over this moral issue.
Sadly, the only winners are the big companies that are destroying the planet, destroying us and dividing us with dumb arguments like this. If everyone refused to work for them for using AI, they'd be forced to close, or not use AI, and the problem would be solved. Divided we're so weak, we could all do so much more... but I get that these times are hard, and some don't want to risk the wellbeing of their families for a fight. Sadly, the consequences will affect our kids, and they won't have a way out. We live sad days, I wouldn't waste our energy on these senseless fights pointing digital fingers and assuming things you have no clue about, you know?

➽ DECENCY & RESTRAINT: don't bully, shame, or be mean about anyone's food, habits, or lifestyle. Light teasing is ok, cruelty is not. No dehumanizing, name-calling, ad hominem digs, or insults to intelligence/literacy.

➽ ENGAGE IN GOOD FAITH: seek mutual understanding! Bring questions not assumptions, curiosity not condemnation, benefit of the doubt not accusations, and sincerity & steel-manning, not sarcasm. Disagreements and challenges must have appropriate tact, tone, and timing.

Exactly this, and they're idiots for doing it. AI isn't at a place to "fully automate" anything successfully. It needs human input, monitoring, and correction, or it will hallucinate and make massive errors, it's just a matter of time.

I have friends that work in the tech and AI industries, and even the pretty pro-AI ones disagree with companies doing things like this. It's just going to lead to disaster when the human is cut out, full stop. They cannot be trusted to monitor themselves or each other effectively, it's not how they're made currently.

Oof, we may not even want to know the details 🥲 If I've learned anything about how society works in the last few years, it's that by the time the common person has been negatively impacted by a sudden-feeling shift, some nasty nefarious shit has been going on behind closed doors for quite a while. 😖

I’m very sorry to hear that, it really friggin sucks. I can empathise because my job also has been slowly automated. I work in translation, legal specifically, and the industry has been slowly dying. As of this year, I barely had any income from it as a freelancer. Switching career in this economy is also difficult (well especially the field I want to switch to- NGO 🥲). I myself haven’t got to the other side but I hope we’ll make it soon.

4

u/Time-Cell9274 Feral Til Fed 7h ago

My job hasn’t been killed yet (I’m waiting for it, hence why I’m moving on) but imagine sitting in big Town Halls, struggling with burnout because the org decided to cut staff and just be told to leverage AI rather than trying to find a full time employee.

And I hate to say it. But donating to charities and NGOs was one of the first things I cut back on when I needed to start saving money. And what friends in non-profit said to me - the corporate donations from 2025 were insulting compared to what was offered in 2023.
