IAmA Board-Certified Kidney Doctor. AMA about water balance, electrolytes, and goofy water myths.

We’re back for round 3(?)! I’m a board-certified nephrologist (kidney doctor) with some time kill, so ask away. I will also field questions about the Grateful Dead, bicycles, or my favorite conspiracy theories.

Previously I have submitted proof to the mods, so hopefully they can just review my last post(s).

I will not be able to provide personalized medical advice, both in this thread or in a DM.

Edit: That’s all for tonight folks, thanks for tuning in!

Mod-Post Vetted Water Charity List

This thread will serve as a repository of vetted charities that have contacted the mod team asking to post here. With each charity you'll see a link to Charity Navigator and/or Charity Watch. We advise only donating if an organization passes these reviews. Feel free to also check any groups on ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, but note that not all charities are nonprofits.

We don't want orgs to spam the subreddit asking for your time/money, so for now (and until the number of asks grows too large) we'll pin comments by organizers in this thread and cycle them out as needed. There's a limit of 2 concurrent pins, so we'll play this by ear for a bit.

I'll update the list as others reach out.

If you're here as an organizer, please shoot us a modmail or reach out to me directly.

I wanna drink more water but i got a logistical problem

This post is gonna sound way too complicated for such a simple problem but I need help planning

I wanna drink more water but i have a problem, i hate going to public bathrooms, my bus commute to school takes two hours and two hours back more or less
So basically my day goes 5:15am to 4pm without going number one
Plus my bag is really heavy and i dont want to purchase plastic water bottles everyday
How do i get my two liters of water a day or however you think i should drink with these restrictions? How much water do i need to take with me?
I need help with planning
I could try going number one when i get to school and before commuting back to home and then maybe drink water at the bus
I just hate bathrooms bcs idk where to put my bag

Any advice is appreciated

Water Bottle Wednesday CamelBak water bottles are criminally underrated

The best straw water bottles on the market. The only bottle that could top this for me could be the owala, but I've never tried one and have enough water bottles rn.

  1. Straw is completely covered when closed
  2. Keeps ice for days
  3. Silicone straw for those who love to chew their straws
  4. Straw mouth piece is completely removable from the lid for easy cleaning
  5. Completely leakproof
  6. The most comfortable carry strap.
  7. Insulated version has a built in silicone boot at the bottom to prevent dents and loud noises.

Just wanted to show my love for this bottle.

Water Bottle Wednesday Bottles with covered lid/straw for hygiene

I've had my classic standard hydroflask for ages, it has dents, scratches and a lot of character.

But i decided to retire it from my go to travel bottle because i realized, that when i unscrew or hold it in my hands - my hands always come in contact with the area where i drink from/my lips touch.

i was prone to getting sick while backpacking - and my last long trip i took a different bottle, with a covered lid that doesn't get touched by my hands.

I know i could've been lucky but i realized that the risk of drinking germs at prolonged travelling was waayyy higher with my old bottle. (and yes i always rinsed and washed it in the hostels i was staying at) - just something to consider!

Too much water Ordered original Brita Maxtra filters 12-pack on Amazon, now shipment is coming from China

Has anyone experienced something similar? First choice from search results on amazon.de for "brita maxtra pure performance" and also directly linked in Amazons Brita Store page. Price is nice, around 5€ less than usual. It's 100% the original product page on Amazon, but sold by "Wivico Direct" which turns out to be based in Shenzhen.

Delivery time is about 2 weeks. :( It can only be fake because those filters are made in Germany.

Anyone who has a home water dispenser, have you had any issues with mold?

I really want to buy a home water cooler/dispenser. But I was reading about how the lines will inevitably start growing mold, regardless of how it’s cleaned or if it’s self cleaning.

So I’m just wondering from those of you who have them, have you experienced mold? Or any other issues I should be aware of?

Also, if you love your home water dispenser, feel free to mention which one you have!

Does anybody have a good water tracking app?

I’ve been using the tracker on the Fitbit app for years but the change to Google Health has just made so many unnecessary updates that has made the app so much less intuitive than it used to be.

I would prefer an app that lets you add water on previous days instead of a hard cut off at midnight. (I had an app with the hard cutoff and it stressed me out and for what)

Also would like an easy switch between fl oz and ml. Fitbit used to do this but after an update a year or 2 or go you had to go into the app settings to change back and forth.

I’m just worried I’m not hydrating enough since I stopped tracking but google health is just…it’s so annoying now

Water cooler/dispenser or reverse osmosis system?

Which do you have (if any)?

I’m leaning toward a water dispenser and I would just get the 5 gallon jugs. But I’ve heard that the lines get moldy and the thought of that really freaks me out.

That lead me to find out about the under sink reverse osmosis systems. And now I’m not sure what I want to do.

One cup to rule them all

I've tried the Yeti Rambler (Love) my old Hydroflask (Also love) Stanley (hate) Thermos (Hate)

I'm essentially looking for something that will take hot AND cold, with a straw, and a sip function that is 100% leakproof, Bonus points if I can take the straw out for when I want hot coffee. Owala was close, but they specifically say not for hot. I've even tried a leakproof cup with a silicone straw tucked away until I'm ready for a cold drink, but I can't stand the taste the silicone gives off.

I like to have a hot cup of coffee a few days a week on my commute in and at my desk, then an iced decaf, then I like to switch to ice water for the rest of the day. I absolutely hate carrying more then 1 bottle or cup with me, and I want to be able to toss it in my bag when I'm heading in and out of work.

Help a homie out, does a cup like this even exist??

Waterdrop sleeve question

Hi everyone!

I have a question about Waterdrop bottles. I’m a huge fan of the brand — both the bottles and the drink cubes — but this morning I accidentally broke my glass bottle. I was way too attached to it, so I’m thinking of switching to a steel one so this hopefully doesn’t happen again haha.

Does anyone here own both the glass and steel Waterdrop bottles and know whether the sleeve that comes with the glass bottle also fits the steel one?
I can’t seem to find any reviews or comparisons about this anywhere, so I’d be really curious to know. AI keeps telling me that it won’t fit, but I honestly don’t understand why 😅

Thanks!

Classic water Can you trust filters that are private label / seller's brand? Or should you stick to main/big brands?

Can one trust filters that are private label & made for the seller? Such as Spiropure filters from Allfilters.com, BRS from Bulk Reef Supply, USWF from discountfilterstore.com, Tier1 from another website, etc.

Or should one stick to big, established brands like Pentek, Omnipure, KX Matrikx, 3m, Watts etc. (I don't know any more.)

I know some will say check that it's NSF certified. But many, even the big brands only do 42 for materials and don't even certify the micron size. I couldn't find hardly any Pentek filters on the NSF database. Plus, the NSF database is a mess and hard to look though.

EDIT: This is a general question. Specific brands i gave are just examples for the broader point. I'm not promoting or giving any opinion on any particular product.

This is for domestic drinking water RO system that's already installed. Originally apec but I'm looking at different filters. I'm using 2.5"x10" filters, but this question can be for any size.
