A lot of women who are grabbed frequently have an instinctual react to fawn in order to keep themselves safe. Placate don't escalate because he's probably bigger and stronger than you so escalation is more likely to get you hurt. Plus it can buy time to find an escape route.

Those initial reactions aren't happy/excited smiles, they're generally signs of discomfort and a form of fawning. They do it in hopes of diffusing the situation by making the person think they're happy and not trying to figure out how to gtfo.
