Acquiring Marcus Sasser from the Pistons for essentially free was a swing i was personally high on that the FO made with the lack of guard play currently on the mavs, with him falling out of the rotation in detroit due to his hip injury worsening his play in the 25-26 season. However, there is some hope for the 26 year old guard to take that leap in Dallas with our guard rotation being essentially kyrie (who will probably miss a couple games to not overstrain him), max christie, sasser, de larrea, cooper (if they treat him as a guard in some stints, functionally on offense he can be one to some extent).
The query above is for 24-25 season players w/ >59 2pt TS%, ≥8 3PA/100, ≥2 rimAST/100, ≥2.2 STL/100
The above list shows the most elite self creating guards that can score inside and bomb 3s at a solid rate and create turnovers and sasser features here on top of sasser having a +3.2 zTS (82%ile), +7.5 creation rTS (93%ile!!!)
Ok so what is zTS and creation rTs you might ask? Each point scored comes from a different platype, for example iso, pnr handler, post ups (creation playtypes), spotups handoffs and OffScreen (spacing playtypes), transition as its own thing, cuts putbacks rollman and others (finishing playtypes).
Now ts% is widespread at this point factoring in 3s 2s and fts, and rts% is relative true shooting which is relative to the league's true shooting. What zTS does is adjust rts% for the playtypes used to provide more context as creation playtypes tend to be more difficult than the rest, and sasser in 24-25 was particularly good at creating his own shot as seen by the 93 percentile creation efficiency stated earlier.
At minimum sasser in a bench role next to larger guards should thrive, and some possible combinations that could work (while kyrie and sasser would be great to watch on offense, the lack of size on the perimeter could hurt) could be larrea and sasser, naji and sasser, coop and sasser if kyrie and cooper stagger minutes a little.
A few extra things helps sasser's case here are that his contesting data on defense has improved since his rookie year and he does get steals and deflections (things which max christie unfortunately doesnt do) which make sasser tenable on defense and his passing (data on second image) isnt that bad either; max is shown here above as a comparison between 2 guards just to show that sasser is closer to a combo/scoring pg than anything.
Third image shows efficiency at different ranges, we can see a dip in rim efficiency probably due to the hip injury affecting him some but the 3pt shooting he adds will be vital to the team's new direction with an emphasis on shooting.
TLDR: Marcus sasser bombs 3s, takes on an actual creation load and is far more than a spot up shooter and can hold his own on defense as well as handle some passing responsibilities which makes him a prime candidate for a breakout year here in Dallas with more opportunity. I hope you appreciate a bit of the statistical breakdowns i made (the other on moussa cisse previously) as the team does seem to be taking an analytical approach to a solid extent especially the hiring of dusty may who is one of the most analytically based coaches out there and pivoting from last year which had us as one of the worst 3pt shooting teams in the league if not the worst.
