The absolute lengths some people on r/anime go to to defend Rudeus/Mushoku Tensei is crazy.
It's fine to admit you like the show because of the wider world/side characters but hate the MC. But no, they can't do that. Instead they say Rudeus is actually a kid and it's fine because of hormones, or some say he has 'grown' so it's fine now. Lmao
838
u/helicophell 10d ago
They'll call you a hater and a larper for enjoying the series but recognising how absolutely shitty he is as a character. Like, goddamn, you gotta question Rifujin (the writer) sometimes...
577
u/ExpertOdin 10d ago
Yeah 100% makes you wonder about authors when they write main characters like this and frame them in an okay to good light. If Rudeus was treated as a villain by the people he victimises fine, but they all either end up marrying him or at least respecting him. Ridiculous. Some sort of disgusting wish fulfilment
330
u/helicophell 10d ago
I mean, it is all reasoned, it is all realistic to the setting
But you have to fucking wonder why would you write a story like this lmao?
239
u/Powerful-Eye-3578 10d ago
Realistic in the sense that, yes people who get groomed so tend to end up in a toxic relationship with the one who groomed them.

Uhh... and that's about it for punishment, and nothing stopped the marriage lmao
173
u/Powerful-Eye-3578 10d ago
Hey your forgetting that he went like a whole year without being able to get a hard on..... That's enough of a punishment for assault and grooming. He really learned his lesson from that ..... /s
I've literally seen people argue this. Like he spent a year without getting a boner so that makes up for his earlier behavior.

Saw a post yesterday asking why do so many animes have perverted shit/assault women for humor. Some comments said it was cultural, but one commenter mentioned how they actually once asked a woman from Japan. It's not cultural, a vast chunk of anime authors are just genuine weirdos. Until ten years ago, Japanese culture considered it weird to even still enjoy anime past the age of 25. Weeb was considered an insult.
So... yeah. The author was just a freak.

You will get downvoted to oblivion for saying this in goodanimemes.
There was a meme comparing the character arcs of Thorfinn and Rudeus and I said that the difference between them is that Thorfinn feels remorse and tries to overcome his past to be a better man by leaving his old ways behind by any means necessary. Rudeus also has a lot of character growth, but none regarding his sexuality towards people much younger than him. They called me gore fetishists and excused his behavior by saying it was ok bc he was emotionally stunted by a traumatic past.
He was stunted by a traumatic past. The anime is about him overcoming that, and he does in a lot of ways. None of which are him taking responsibility for the fact that he’s hitting on a lot of women he had power over and relationships with when they were literal children

I got reminded of that post too. I still can't believe those two were not only compared but most comments agreed that thorfinn was worse rhan rudeus. I understand that the sub came to be, because of a war with "tourists" but this is ridiculous. I've been watching anime and reading manga for 15 years and in all those years I've never read anything as appalling as mushoku tensei. People defending rudeus need to have their hard drives checked.

Platform it was initially published on kind of relied on having abhorrent crap and shockvalue to stand out from the rest of the shit.
Kind a weird Rifujin keeps backpedaling the creepiest part of his story, and then backpedals the backpedals.

I tried to push through because of how many people claim it’s peak but I just couldn’t stomach Rudeus. It’s just a pedo’s wet dream isekai fantasy, there’s plenty of other good story content out there that doesn’t have a creep mc.
48
u/Dyn-Mp 10d ago
I pushed through the entire novel series and yea.. nothing was really ever "peak". Id say it was a solid 6 or 7/10 but his weird tendencies and fetishises cringed me out many times over that I had to take breaks.

RIP Log Horizon.
Author's one true isekai wish is to not pay taxes, so the first 8 episodes of the anime are dedicated to building up this fantasy society to explain why the MC could be the one in charge of collecting any taxes.
Season 3 of the anime was delayed because the author was in prison for tax fraud.
Rare isekai that isn't centered around power or sexual fantasy, but instead around taxes.

It got extremely old and stale extremely quickly when Subaru Outback or w/e his name was ran into the 3452345234th person who just so happened to be willing to resort to an orgy of violence over one wrong word.
The entire show is just the same trope repeated over and over and over. He meets a new person, says or does the wrong thing, gets murdered, then it happens 435213542 more times until he finds out the exact way to BS his way through the situation, adds a new girl to his harem, and moves on to the next psychotic murderer that he has to trial-and-error his way past.

I didn't say it was THE first isekai, just one of the first ones. So both Re:Zero and MT are some of the earliest isekais, but MT got adapted into an anime much later by comparison. OOP is being dumb saying that MT is a new isekai when it absolutely is not.
22
u/The_Dreaded_Spectre 10d ago
Even then, Isekai's in general (even just limiting it to Japanese ones) have been around for decades before either IIRC. Rezero is peak. It has ok amount of romance that is fine for its genre. It's good that it's not shoving romance down our throats like almost every other anime getting released.

Well, can't really argue with taste. Though it should be said that the wives cycle in theirimportance to the story, being inthe limelight and then shuffle to the background doing their own thing like being a teacher and bodyguard, only to get back to the frontrow a while later. So it's natural to find them boring sometimes.

Not Rezero's author being close friends with MT's author for over a decade, and has like gazillion below age characters in blind worship for MC like typical wish fulfilment isekais. Pot calling kettle something something

The joke is that the guy on he right, Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei, is a pedophile who hides his porn inside a fake calculator app, given how much it weighs.
As to how he is a pedo, dude is a 30 something man who spied on his niece, jerked off to her, missed his parents' funeral to do it, got beat up by his brother because of it, died, reincarnated as a baby in another world, and immediately went on to be a creep to all the women around him, and groomed all the girls his "age" he interacted with.

u/Genocidal-Ape 10d ago
Na, he also groomed girls far younger than his age and even needs to be reminded of to keep a respectable boundary to his daughter later on in the Novel.

As an avid anime enjoyer myself, theres plenty of masterpieces to watch. MT is a literal piece of shit, defended by pedo-lovers and incels.

Old isekais are better imo. People forget that Inuyasha is "technically" also an isekai.
Now then here and there was also a really depressive isekai

The guy on the right is problematic as fuck.
Ironically it DOES have good plot, character development, and some romance, compared to like 99% of isekai being kinda basic bitch.

You can tell the majority have 'heard' of the anime, yet only the negative talking points. Most anime have at least 1 or 2 sus things if you really dive deep into them, but most ignore the awkward stuff or excuse it. The whole point of this anime is that he is a very flawed human who even at his second chance of life doesn't always choose the best route. He was anti social and a pervert in his previous life but throughout the anime you see him grow as a person and actively want to do right by those around him.
No one has to excuse his behavior.
Edit: also past anime was fucking wild lol. At least this one constantly reminds you that his behavior is flawed.

The right has good plot and good characters. The romances are a consequence of the intensely flawed characters.
The left has good characters, but I very much struggle with the plot. The romances are pretty plain also tbh.

Subaru's deeply flawed, and also far more interesting than anyone in MT, I'd argue.

If I've learned anything from the internet, the reason we see so many "Gary/Mary Stu" MCs is some readers DESPISE characters with flaws. If you ever had a flaw, you are forever tainted and evil. Only antagonists should have them, because you have to hate them.
Protagonists are meant to be perfect and flawless. Which is just boring, and why we have so many "Hyper invincible and super competent and intelligent MCs" out there. (Which aren't inherently bad, because sometimes junk food is fun).
Like Rudeus is a flawed protagonist, who realizes he's flawed and grows as a person. That's what makes it fun. So many other series have protagonists who are the same at the start as they are in the end, except maybe now they have a lot of friends/lovers. But they're still, personality-wise, basically the same person.
Admittedly, a small part of this is also a lot of isekai are on REALLY tiny timescales when you think about it. They sometimes are only a few years long! Even some reincarnated series end up only covering them into their childhood or early teenage years before the plot resolves itself. MT actually covers Rudeus from his birth to his adulthood and beyond. Which is pretty rare for a series.

u/Powerful-Eye-3578 10d ago
Rudeus is deeply deeply and grossly flawed, and if the writer was better, maybe he could have taken rudeues through a redemption arc. It would be a hard ask for even a very skilled author though. Unfortunately, the author just isn't that good and cannot let go of the harem and hyper sexualization aspects of the story long enough to actually make any of rudeus "growth" meaningful or satisfying. Like who cares if he acknowledges that it's bad to groom people, if in the next chapter he is rewarded for his "realization" by having the person he groomed added to his harem. Basically he acknowledges that it's bad and it's bad that he did it, then indulges in the resulting emotional manipulation anyway. Which does not show growth.

Roxy who taught Rudeus when he was 4 while she was in her 40s, fell in love with this kid(mind you, she has no knowledge that Rudeus is actually in is 30s. To her, he's just a child), and then proceeded to take advantage of him while he was going through severe depression from his father's death.(If your morals are so fucked to the point where u don't see anything wrong with her actions, imagine a 50 year old man having sex with(raping) a devastated 16 year old girl whom he taught when she was just 4, after her dad just died, claiming it was to bring her mood back up). She then went along with Rudeus to his house and just let her victim Rudeus do all the begging to his wife on why he cheated while she, the 50 year old adult stood there like a statue. She then got rewarded for all her deeds by getting married to her victim Rudeus. She literally raped him and benefitted from it.(MT story rewarding characters for the most vile things as usual). This is the character you like?
I am baffled at how she doesn't get more hate. Considering the fandom, I can only assume that it's because she's a "hot loli".

Isekai barely has any good anime with the amount of it has. Also the hate for Mushoku tensei is so fucking boring and blind
I get the hate for Rudeus but the hate is so blind that the hate gets transferred to the entire anime. Goobers hate the whole show just cuz of a single character

Isn't said character the MAIN character, meaning the story follows the guy everyone is hating on, thus ruining the anime for everyone who hates that kind of character?

Funny thing is both shows cater to the hikikomori. While one says "it's okay you can still start again" the other says "you want to start again well you have a lot of learning to do, and you have to kill the wretched parts of your ego like your misogyny, so you could be a better person".

For the record, Re: Zero novels and Mushoku Tensei novels both came out the same year. Both series are about the same age outside of the anime, which Re: Zero started about 2016 while Mushoku Tensei's anime hit about 2021.
The joke is about how people feel that Mushoku Tensei is all about a pervert reincarnating, while there was more substance in other Isekai like Re: Zero, the example used (the two characters shown are the main characters from said animes).
Anyway this is Carl out, I got a shift at the mini-mart.
