I havent seen that movie, but this looks almost exactly like the coke cake my grandma would make for my dad every year for his birthday.
She was a master southern country grandma cook. She knew how to make banging desserts, but she never loaded them with sugar. Scratch made, sweetened just right so the flavor wasn't lost in syrupy sweetness.
If i remember right, at least in the book, Bruce ate an entire chocolate cake by himself, so he was lectured on how the chefs put their blood, sweat, and tears into making delicious food, only to be wasted on one selfish person, so as punishment for doing so, he was forced to eat another chocolate cake, but this one ACTUALLY had the chefs' blood, sweat, and tears baked into it.
I don't think the movie ever mentions this tidbit from the book, but yeah
I think in the book everyone goes wild imagining about terrible things being baked into it before he starts eating it, but it doesn’t actually have anything unusual (that anyone can tell, anyway). It’s just a loooot of cake and Trunchbull breaking a plate on his head after barely does anything because of it.
I read the book once, and the one line that has always stuck out to me was about Bruce being "so full of cake, he was like a bag of wet cement, and you couldn't have hurt him with a sledge hammer." 😆
I was always repulsed by that scene as a kid as I didn’t realise the Trunchbull was using a metaphor when she said the cooks ‘sweat and blood went into that cake’
And when he seems like he's suffering, as intended by the principal, he gets encouraged from his classmates to finish it saying he can do it, and he does and everyone cheers for him, and the principal gets angry and breaks the cake pan over his head.
Made in 1996, but set in mid 1980's. So not old enough where this would have been anyway okay lmao. The principal is comically evil. It's a great movie honestly, has Danny devito in it.
Danny Devito directed it too. They dedicated the movie to Mara Wilson's mother who passed of breast cancer during production (he got an early special cut made so she could she it too). Him and Rhea Perlman were the exact opposite of their characters to Mara in real life.
The book was written by Roald Dahl who wrote lots of children books, and he channeled his poor experiences in his absurdly strict, abusive boarding school into Matilda. The principal, Ms Trunchball was such character.
Why is everyone forgetting the snot dripping wrinkly old lady who prepared the cake and brought it. That’s what made the cake unpalatable but Brucey ain’t no little bitch - finished it, one fistful at a time.
Yeah :/ even though chocolate cake is my favorite, to this day every time I see it, I think of that scene. It turned my stomach then xD it turns my stomach now. Impactful for a kids movie xD
In the UK a few major supermarkets sell it. Think it started a few years ago with an Instagram famous bakery making it but now much more widely available.
Had one bought for my birthday last year, was pretty nice.
In one of the scenes another student, Bruce, ate the principals piece of cake, and the principal is…interesting (literally has a box full of nails sticking in that she puts kids in). So, as punishment, she basically forces Bruce to eat the rest of the huge ass chocolate cake
Matilda is a fun, sweet movie. It's a comedy, so it can land differently on different people, but the message is very sacrin and ends very satisfactory. I am 56 and if I see it playing, I'll watch it.
