u/RobotPolarbear 1d ago
They gang raped a woman at Cornell University about two years ago. It was in the news then, but the story is being rekindled right now because she is filing a civil case. The story is especially infuriating because the university punished them by having them write essays. Also, there was a group chat with 50+ men from the frat who all saw that these young men were inviting others upstairs for "free pussy" and talking about what they were doing. It was all done out in the open.

And if they're not a rapist, they're perfectly fine being friends with them and vouching for them.
Frats haze pledges so they can weed out people who will report them to campus or the authorities. None of the frat bros would be bros if they didn't pay for friendship, but they act like it's a badge of honor to be in a frat. It literally takes nothing more than money for dues and a willingness to take shit to join.

I'm not sure what grounds they'd be arrested on. They don't appear to have broken any laws.
https://www.npr.org/2026/09/28/nx-s1-5983480/cornell-fraternity-rape-chi-phi-case-updates).
In a nine-page statement, Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten announced on Monday that efforts are underway to reexamine the case. Once his office determines appropriate charges, the case will be presented to a grand jury, he said. Van Houten said he has assigned a senior prosecutor, with experience in sex crimes, to start preparations.
...
Van Houten acknowledged the outrage. In defending his office, he said the civil lawsuit's claims differ from the unnamed victim's sworn statement from two years ago.
"Jane Doe's sworn statement in November of 2024 did not allege that she was drugged against her will or gang raped. On the contrary, Jane Doe's statement described her participation in drug use and sexual conduct as voluntary, conscious, and consensual," he wrote. "My office obviously did not and could not have based our November 2024 decision on the allegations in a civil lawsuit that would not be filed until nearly two years later."
...
Van Houten says there are similarities between Doe's original 2024 statement to police and details in the lawsuit. However, he writes: "There is no evidence in Jane Doe's statement indicating that she clearly expressed that she did not consent to the act. According to the statement, each time Jane Doe asked to stop the sexual conduct, the sexual conduct stopped."
And thus "criminal charges simply could not be sustained," Van Houten explained. "To instruct otherwise would have been to violate my prosecutorial obligations under New York State Law."

Sometimes great parents end up with monsters.
9
u/SweetPrism 1d ago edited 1d ago
I was a Special Educator for almost a decade; I spent about five cumulative years exclusively with kids who have emotional/behavioral disorders. Our learning setting was an alt classroom because the kids I worked with were Level 3--they spent the most amount of time legally allowed outside of a traditional classroom setting to accommodate behavioral intervention.
All told, I probably worked with and/or knew about 100 kids with these disturbances. Guess how many of those kids had a relatively normal, functioning home? One. She was my student because she had suffered a severe TBI after running into a concrete retaining wall on her bicycle at a young age, and the TBI resulted in newly aggressive behavior.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is maybe you're right--maybe "great" parents can end up with monsters? But I have never witnessed this in the wild. My guess is (at best) these kids had well-meaning parents. Parents like those of MacKenzie Shirilla, who pacified, enabled, and gave the benefit of the doubt one too many times resulting in a child that simply never learned the skill of personal accountability. One could make the argument that this is obviously less damaging than abusive, neglectful, or ill-equipped parents, but look what happens--the kids wind up in the same place at the end.
Edit: don't dox the parents. But don't dismiss their role in making these kids, either.
5
u/crazywrangler616 1d ago
I taught for 39 years, and would agree that most parents may be negligent and therefore responsible, but I donât agree that they are fair game to dox etc unless it becomes known they tried to mitigate consequences or intimidate the victim
2
u/SweetPrism 1d ago
I never said anything about doxing, not at all. These kids are adults now; they're fair game. The only point I'm making is that these kids were made by their parents.
5
u/jpewaqs 1d ago
The original comment was about doxxing the parents. A responder basically said don't do this, sometimes great parents end up with monsters. You then replied to this going through your background and saying in your experience the bad kids generally come from bad backgrounds. Reading the thread, your post does come across as supporting the top comment of dox the parents. I get that's not your intention and you probably were simply scrolling through and picked up on a comment to respond to. But if you read the thread down, it's what you imply.

From the description you've given, you worked with a small subset of students with behavioral/emotional disorders: students whose problems were so severe that they couldn't function and were given that special education.
Most of the kids I knew/were friends with in middle/high school who were getting into fights, drinking, doing/selling drugs, etc weren't in special education. They were with the rest of the students so you would probably never see them.
The people involved in this seem very high functioning (Ivy League students, class president, white collar jobs, etc) so you would have never seen them.
It's also unclear what you mean by "normal, functioning home". For the kids I described above, it was a lot of single mother households, no parental supervision (because mom had to work), poverty (because single parent household), and kids left to their own devices.
Would you say a single mother who did the best she could was a "great" parent? I don't know. But blaming them and trying to ruin their lives because they were put in a shitty situation (as the top comment in this chain recommended) is beyond idiotic.

It's much easier to get away with that behavior when you have Rich well connected parents who will protect you. Hence Donald trump.
14
u/Fearless_Dog5208 1d ago
These were adults. We don't hold parents responsible unless their parents had a part in covering it up. If their parents did help in the cover up then by all means bury them to.
Cornell and the Administrators who buried it need to be held responsible as well.
11
u/Rude_Award2718 1d ago
They weren't born this way. This is how they were raised. Rich kids allowed to do whatever they want because Rich parents will protect them. This is how you create the Epstein class. The simple fact that the district attorney didn't even want to investigate tells me that he was trying to cover it up. So fuck him.
5
u/AvailableAdHere 1d ago
I know this isnât the place for this conversation since you seem pretty dead set. But historically making someone else responsible for anotherâs crimes usually leads to bad outcomes. For example, itâs generally not possible to inherit your parents debt, since eventually you would be responsible for your whole bloodline. In this example, where do you stop? Should we also harass the grandparents, the extended family? How far do we go to make things ârightâ?
3
u/Rude_Award2718 1d ago
But what if we find out that one of the parents who's well-connected in the county, encourage the district attorney to not pursue charges against their child or we find out that a hefty donation was made to Cornell to give them a lackluster punishment? I think that will come out in the next several weeks. So knowing who the parents are is a vital piece of information.

Sure, if we find out the parents are criminals charge em. Iâm just saying (as someone who has a fucked up family), I really donât like the idea of this transitive guilt by familial association. Suffice it to say that Cornell campus police had a vested interest in covering this up so they can keep getting legacy student money, and New York's backwards laws about intoxication and consent are in direct contention with Title IX protections for sexually assaulted college students. The people demanding we use it as a primary source definitely want to undermine justice.

As a woman - my initial impulse was to jump on the bandwagon. I've read the DA's statement and I'm not sure I feel so sure now after reading her sworn statements. This is double after reading many of the crazy posts above. Everyone on this sub needs to slow down and read the details of this case and reassess. This feels like a witch hunt in the making. Or maybe they're guilty - I'm not sure but we need a trial not this political witch hunt fanaticism. And why does everyone keep saying all white guys? Am I looking at a different photo than everyone else?
8
u/UnusualPieceOfGum 1d ago
So is the tl;dr of this, at first she said they did not SA her, now she is saying they did?
And the text messages appear to back up the later? However, because of her initial statement, many don't find her credible?
5
u/Potatoes90 1d ago
There's a lot more detail in the oriy report of how things happen and who was involved. She said no to specific acts and they listened to her. She said no to at least one specific person and that person didn't have sexual contact with her. When she said she was done it stopped. She voluntarily took all the drugs and alcohol involved and she said she was never incapacitated or incapable of making her own decisions. New York state law allows for concent to be given while under the influence as long as you were aware of the intoxicants you ingested and consented to them, meaning she was legally capable of giving concent. She texted one of the men a few days after and discussed how things got out of hand and they should get together again with less drugs and less participants.
The text messages in the snap chat also don't suggest rape. They suggest lewd acts being performed with multiple men in the fraternity house, but nothing suggests it was non consensual.
3
u/UnusualPieceOfGum 1d ago
Thanks for the additional info, do you a source for the oriy report and text messages?
2
u/Potatoes90 1d ago
Somehow every news organization says they have the transcript but nobody has released it. They also jump around the statement and link it to the 2026 lawsuit rather than just laying out what the original complaint said. I'm not gonna dig anymore, but here is an article from CNN about it. They say that she said the later parts of the encounter felt like it was rape, which I had not heard before. I don't have anything on the texts later, so take that with a grain of salt, but that's more due to me not wanting to find it than it not being available.
https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/30/us/key-questions-cornell-sexual-assault-investigation
Also, look up sunny hostin talking about it on the view. In a very unexpected take she very briefly details why no prosecutor would have brought charges in this case based on 2024 info. I'm apparently too much of a ludite to find it and link it here, but I trust you're better at this than I am and will be able to find it.

Apparently in New York state if she herself willingly became intoxicated, they cannot charge the guys with rape even if they did sexually assault her. Most states have gotten rid of that loophole, but New York still has it
→ More replies (1)2
u/Skoodge42 1d ago
That is not entirely accurate. Her consent is still needed. Your phrasing makes it sound like she said no and was still forced, but that isn't what happened.
If she was sexually assaulted, that would still be illegal . By her own admission they stopped and listened when she said no, took the drugs voluntarily, and wanted to have the sexual encounters she had

u/NoWomanNoTriforce 1d ago
Many people on here are too young to remember the Duke Lacrosse team having their lives ruined for what ended up being a completely fabricated account.
You are right in that consent is fluid, and I 100% believe an investigation needs to be done. And one not being done when this actually happened is negligence from local law enforcement and Cornell.
But I will never support assuming that accused people are actually guilty.
7
u/failedaspotcheck 1d ago
Her initial statement stated that she was repeatedly pressed into taking more drugs and performing more sex with more men while she says "no" numerous times throughout the encounter. She also explicitly states that there were parts of the sex that she had no memory of.
That's rape. People are just as mad at Cornell and the DA as the seven men in the lawsuit.
3
u/2021isevenworse 1d ago
I think people need to slow down and make sure that these are really the guys who were involved.
Just because someone posts a name and photo, doesn't mean they're actually involved.
Too many lives ruined by vigilante internet justice that falsely accused people who had no connection.
5
u/mrpyrotec89 1d ago
Yeah same. Had pitchforks out until I read the old police testimony. Which then Cornell's response and punishment to the 7 and Frat makes sense.
Also she's suing for money, which you always embellish the case for a settlement. So her civil suit could be over-exggaurated on purpose.
So yeah, punlic opinion could be super off on this like it was for the duke lacrosse team
