I always think of the Forrest Gump quote ā€œStupid is as stupid does.ā€ Ignorance in this country is staggering.

31

u/oz69zy 1d ago

I always say, "ignorance is a special kind of stupid". It's a choice to continue to regurgitate propaganda without research and coming to your own conclusions. Education doesn't stop after high school folks

12

u/H3llzyea 1d ago

And research is not Facebook or Twitter or even Reddit. You have to actively try to learn the truth, and the information is readily available.

5

u/Maleficent-Art-1937 21h ago

I understand why they miss it. They tend to hide that type of information in books.

5

u/Zorkflerp 1d ago

One major problem is that education may not be happening in schools. They may be able to regurgitate facts short term but critical thinking does not sink in.

3

u/Maleficent-Art-1937 21h ago

At MAGA events competing the 8th grade is equivalent becoming an Astro-nuclear brain surgeon in the civilized world.

4

u/Pimpwerx 22h ago

"Dangerously stupid" is the term I want to use. They are stupid, and causing harm to the rest of us.

3

u/Spammon89 1d ago

As is being pointed out we actually live in a socialist country if you're rich and wealthy because the government will ensure your wealth will be maintained. The rest of us have to suffer under that oligarchy. We are basically Russia at this point.

8

u/PensionFlashy5132 1d ago

Socialism for the rich rugged capitalism for the poor

Russia has universal healthcare and affordable public education.

Yeah my parents are maga boomers who are functionally illiterate. I grew up with them, so I’m not exaggerating. I’m 41 and have never seen them read anything.

And this all sucks bc they were never political, which I think was on a large part bc they can’t read and both never finished high school. For example, my dad never got poisoned by Rush Limbaugh back in the day. So I grew up in a fairly moderate home. No racism (white family), no politics. I’ll give them props for at least knowing education was important. They drilled that into us 5 kids, and I’m the only one who graduated college.

Then boom. My dad retired, stared spending every waking second online, got indoctrinated by Russian bots, and now they’re maga till death. Then the rest of the family followed suit.

I do you love them, but I couldn’t take it anymore and went no contact this year. The crazy conspiracies and blatant mental gymnastics in the face of factual evidence just became too much, to the point where it started to physically hurt listening to their nonsense. So I blocked my entire family and am feeling sad but at least with no pain.

Edit: one more point. The breaking point for me was the total disregard for reality and consequences. I’d prove some nonsense wrong to my dad, and he’d either scoff ā€œwell that’s your opinionā€ or worse, he’d avoid admitting he’s wrong and say ā€œit’s all just entertainment for meā€.

That pushed the needle into no contact.

I fully support bring back voter testing on political science in order to cast a ballot.

I bet that recently naturalized citizens from foriegn countries have a better understand of how our government works than the average MAGA does.

22

u/Double_Look_5715 1d ago

Our voter testing was not a "political science" test, they were not fair and were meant to keep specific people from voting at all.

The solution isn't bringing back Jim Crow garbage, it's actually meaningfully educating people. Tougher to pull off, less likely to backfire when those people have their hands on the wheel

8

u/Select-Government-69 1d ago

Also the people who need the education are actively opposed to education because it is ā€œindoctrinationā€.

3

u/CueAnon420 1d ago

Fine - they have the right to oppose it if they choose.

But they forfeit the right to vote until they can prove they understand what that means.

MAGA right now is the epitome of a sundowning McConnell voting incorrectly until someone whispers in his ear how he should cast his ballot.

6

u/hirtiusrufus 1d ago

This would disenfranchise so many people you don’t intend to disenfranchise. If we want people to vote, if want to have a real functioning democracy, disenfranchisement is not the solution. Democracy and disenfranchisement are not compatible.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/IThinkItsAverage 1d ago

The problem is evil men use good systems to do incredible evil beyond anything they’d be capable of doing without those good systems. A system like this that restricts voting, no mater how well intentioned, will be used by bad people to revoke voting rights from good people. We don’t need a system that dictates who can vote and who can’t, we need a voting system that gives more weight to people who do understand politics. Like ranked choice voting systems, something that gives people who take the time to educate themselves more options than those who just vote based on feelings or party affiliation. At least with a system like that, even if we don’t get the candidate we personally want, we can still end up with a good candidate that we are ok with getting elected.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/CueAnon420 1d ago

I should have worded it - I support NEW testing that is fair and solely focuses on political science and the organization of our government.

Because you should not be able to cast a vote if you do not understand the ramifications of your ballot.

7

u/l0rd_br0cktree 1d ago

Why not just fund education instead of gatekeeping voting?

2

u/commiscowboy Prefer Coffee But Fill My Cup šŸ«– 1d ago

I mean the majority of maga are boomers and zoomers. The education window has closed for one of those groups. I don’t think a refresher PSA prior to voting is the worst idea though

2

u/kalashnidog 1d ago

I think there should be an entire week or two in high school and college government classes before an election. Just presenting major candidates and issues (while attempting to be as unbiased as possible).

Kids apathetic to voting will likely become adults apathetic to voting if we let them.

The deconstruction of your statement is just wild.

If you actually were versed in poli-sci, meaning you knew enough political theory to understand voter suppression, you absolutely would not say what you said.

But you did, so you must not understand it.

Which means that your opinion is, basically, that you think the government should legally disenfranchise YOU specifically; instead of, ya'know, just choosing not to vote because you're too irresponsible to form an intelligible opinion on the issue. And you think this is some sort of gotcha hot take.

Buck wild.

Pro tip: hold off on any perjury accusations.

Both systems in their purest unfettered forms (capitalism and socialism) risk tipping into authoritarianism.

One, from the slave owner, the other, mob rule.

Why not a mixture of both? Like for example a social democracy… like Sweden, Norway Finland and Denmark.

There is a possibility that when someone says, they support ā€œsocialismā€, they really mean ā€œsocial democracyā€.

It’s because they were all grooming kids. Their Machiavelli style new life is projecting Christian morals and protecting kids but they never comprehended the Bible or even raised their own children. They promoted being a f up like themselves but the only reason they made it through life is walking on the heads of others while being unapologetically unappreciative of their relatively easy life. Their parents were military brats that dodged the Vietnam drafts by being ā€œhippiesā€ but the minute the us was saving Vietnamese allies by giving them refugee status they became xenophobic.

Who would want them to reject anti-communists? Communists would want them to reject anti-communist people.

Russia has been grooming the group since the 50s.

Except nothing the Trump administration has done has been fascist. Everything has been accordance with existing law, and in fact is comparable to things previous Democratic presidents have done. Trump has not set up as a dictator and has followed every law even when he's been challenged in court. Reality check you can't challenge a fascist dictator in court. as far as communism goes. Frankly, I'd rather just keep what I earn. Taxes are already too high, me personally, I'd be in favor of cutting just about every government-funded social service. u/Phewelish 1d ago

the problem is anyone can see the other as being fascist. anyone can look at their opponent and find fault with words that arent allowed or removing political opponents

anytime the opposition is rendered silent for any reason...one could call fascism.

with socialism we have a very popular old book, Atlas Shrugged.

long story short, when the people who hold the world up tire of their inventions and labor being exploited for lazy folk who just wish to game the system and leave to create thier own society, youd be left with people who dont know how or want to do anything

i see the flaws in both of this thinking but at its base level...these ideas easily appeal to morons and while you can convince me against them....it wont be so ez with them

1

u/Worth-Ad9939 1d ago

I think it would be beneficial for everyone to take a step back and read a book not written to sensationalize history, but those seeking to capture it accurately.

Books like "Talking to Strangers" help you realize we are being walked by our DNA and the Corporations that have exploited long evolved traits.

There are groups that prefer to defer their judgment and freedom to government and businesses they think are smarter than them.

In doing so they become puppets to the corporations that shape their reality through digitized modern marketing techniques.

We're all susceptible.

One way to wake up is to disconnect from media for 30+ days. To read books with others out-loud (if you have ADHD/ADD).

Focus on ingesting quality ingredients, learn to love water and walking.

Capitalism and Religion got us. Took the wheel long ago and left humans as fleshy emotional nodes that capitalism loves because we're easy to push.

We are being played by the family that invented the lightbulb. These failed forward incest networks that now dictate the future and will likely survive to rebuild the next new market once their actions wipe this version out.

This is an oversimplification bell curve. but its to demonstrate how political affiliation can be distributed. the main problem with this is where people "think" they are on the spectrum, and where they actually are.

Most people on the far left or far right will probably say they are more in the middle and everyone else is extremist.

seldom do actual extremist think they are extremist, but will accuse everyone left or right of them as extremist.

Dictatorships and authoritarian governments always reside at the extreme ends, it's the only way they can maintain themselves in power. extremist on both sides will do everything they can to "pull" subjects from the middle. they typically attack those with "centrist" views more than extremist opposite of them, which makes sense since this is the group that has more appeal and is a threat that can pull people away from the edges. freedom, human rights, and peace can only coexist in about 60% area of that curve. 30+/- from the center.

This is just my opinion of what I have observed in society. .

Fascism: an ultranationalist authoritarian ideology that sees the world through the lens of a ruthless zero-sum competition between different ethnic groups/cultures. It advocates for using state violence to protect/enforce the social order and cultural identity of the nation, and the violent punishment of foreign or "degenerate" people who are seen as a threat to the national identity and national unity. Fascism posits that liberal values such as pluralism, democracy and freedom are naive and will make the nation weak and vulnerable. It idolizes the uniformity and violent capabilities of traditional military structure and holds this up as a model for society as a whole to emulate.

Socialism: a broad term for a system where resources and the means of production are collectively controlled and distributed by the state.

republican, conservative will usher in fascism.

in California, they don’t all look white. they look like Spanish speakers doing advertiasements for republicans, claiming to be poor farmers, who probably got bailed out or nearly deported by this administration. theyre doing commercials throwing around the word socialism and probably dont know what it means or the difference. they’re complaining about non republican candidates who had nothing to do with their gas prices going higher.

but i guess they’re paying them enough for those commercials to make it worth it. someone somewhere is buying it that someone besides the greedy fly is responsible.

Those Antifa goons will suppress your thoughts and beat what they call fascism right out of you! You shall bow down to their vision of superiority or suffer the social and economic consequences. For they are morally and ethically superior and the smooth brained mouth breathers deserve whatever violence comes their way.

Democratically elected system where the state owns companies, land, factories, farms, real estate etc., and the markets aren’t free but prices are dictated by the government. You own personal property, car, appliances etc. and to an extent your apartment but it’s usually a permanent lease from the government.

This state has never existed. Each socialist state has never been democratic as each one has been a byproduct of an attempt at communism.

True socialism cannot exist because 1. It will be impoverished, like china before Deng Xiaoping, 2. Because it would lose the following election. The second Poland was allowed to vote the communists (socialists) lost 99-1.
