The way MAGA ... "celebrities," for lack of a worse term for them, immediately posted it on social media seconds before it blew up in his face lets you know it was all coordinated ahead of time to be a massive scandal he'd uncovered. The way it unraveled was just perfect and left a lot of people looking stupid.

Its very funny to see them score own goals like this. Not only did they show they have zero attention to detail and didn't verify anything (or heed the warnings of the committee staff) they made it a Dewey Defeats Truman moment by lining up all their allies and talking heads to congratulate him on his big brain play.

The hilarious part about this whole incident is that it was telegraphed ahead of time. A story in Axios about how Schmitt is VP material for Vance, Gaetz pumping it up, and hacks like Benny Johnson giving the details before they were actually spoken in the Senate.
This was part of a pretty massive PR campaign. And while normal people can see it fell flat on its face, Republicans aren't normal people. To them, the mere fact Schmitt struck the proper defiant pose and showed he will FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT regardless of what the facts are is a winning message in the modern Republican Party.
Never back down. Never walk away from a lie if that lie might be useful. These are the lessons that Trumpism has imposed when it merged with the Republican Party.

Yeah you said it well. This type of guy is exactly who this current Republican Party wants.
No competence needed; just act like a tough guy and say the right things. They are appealing to the masses of people who want to watch politics like they watch professional wrestling.
Just play along and enjoy the show even though you know itâs all just a game.

The entire campaign against James Talarico is to call him a slur for homosexuals without actually using that slur, because if that slur is used Republicans will have about 2-3% of their votes flip. Because while some gay people enjoy lower taxes, none of them want to be persecuted (unless that's their kink).
