Discussion Sekiro is much better than Black Myth Wukong
Sekiro and Bloodborne are my favorite FromSoft games.
Black Myth Wukong is very mid compared to them. No parrying except for a spell you can only use twice per life. It sucks

u/bam2403 13h ago
Just because itās not Sekiro doesnāt mean it sucks - I had fun playing it even if it was a 7/10 game - you can only play Sekiro so many times (currently stuck on NG+3 Charmless against Owl trying for plat)

u/jimbojangles1987 13h ago
Charmless is a different beast

It kinda sucks even if it's not compared to Sekiro, though. I'd say 7/10 is about right. But Also I don't really have time for 7/10 games.

u/EdenStrife 12h ago
Why are you comparing the games at all? They are going for different things. Itās like booting up the Witcher 3 and complaining that thereās no parrying. Brother they are different games.
Is this like karma farming where you go on to a subreddit for a specific game and just complain about games that have nothing to do with it?

u/hamptont2010 9h ago
I'll never understand this recurrent trend of using one thing to put down another. Like, is Sekiro a better game? I think so. But I think Sekiro is better than, like, 99.9% of games ever made. That doesn't make those other games bad, or unfun, or any other negative moniker. It just means that Sekiro is peak greatness. But if the only game I ever had to play again was Sekiro, I'd get bored as shit. Having other games with other goals, styles, ideas, stories, art, etc., are what keep video games fresh and interesting.

they have that buddhist vibe but aside from that totally different

Not to be biased or anything but have learned of the see-through mechanic in Wukong? It seems very much like parry or than it allows you to counter immediately. It is as satisfying as a parry

u/sparklikemind 13h ago
I will also add I really enjoyed the latest God of War games with the axe. Great combat

I gave it a try, but there's not much control over the timing as you're already mid-twirling combo and then need to time the long strike to happen coincidentally as an enemy attacks. I just don't feel in control of the timing

The secret last boss in bmw was harder than any Sekio boss to me, unless I wanted to try some bug exploit that made the boss not attack you (not sure if that got patched now)
1
u/Rydrslydr715 2h ago
Idk I just rawdogged it and beat him. He has some bs moves. Tho I found the regular final boss to be harder than him.

u/Split8Wheys 13h ago
I played both.
BM Wukong makes you feel OP after getting max skills, just like it should, Wukong is a demi god. Imo The See Through mechanic while isn't exactly a parry but a counter that requires more skills and timing than a traditional parry, counter button. But then again BM Wukong isn't really a traditional souls like game, (a normal enemy can't kill you easily) it's more of an action adventure game with skill point system similar to souls like.
Sekiro is a souls like game, where you can be punished and killed by failing to dodge or parry a fatal blow even by early game enemies. The counter system is a key element to game by draining the stamina gauge you can land a fatal blow. Sekiro also gives you the option of making the game harder, requiring more skill and timing perfection
I've never played bloodborne but my body is ready for Duskbloods.

u/DanikanSkywalkr 12h ago
Legit question... Why do Americans misuse the term demi god? It means half or part human part god/divine. But it seems like americans specifically use it as a term for anyone with god-like power
1
u/Split8Wheys 12h ago
I might've miss titled Sun Wukong, you're right a demi god is a half human, half god being, which SWK isn't.
Americans are legit dumb, myself included, we use words in sentences that make no sense and change the definition of some too, because we heard or read it in certain ways we think that's the proper or right way to use it.

u/DanikanSkywalkr 12h ago
Well damn now I kinda feel bad
But thanks for not getting defensive, I was actually curious because it's so common

u/PatserGrey 12h ago
I don't think that is in question, OP. Sure it's unfinished for starters i.e. the last level. It's different and well worth a playthrough. It's got some very decent boss battles but yeah, charged smash will get you through 90% of the game.
1
u/Weird_Troll Platinum Trophy 11h ago
I beat the whole game just with charged smash and light attack spam, still fun
2
u/PatserGrey 10h ago
Yup, cloud step into charged smash will do it. Staff spin did a decent bit of heavy lifting for me also from the YL fight onwards. I enjoyed it and played ng+ to get the platinum but didn't really feel the urge to play anymore. Sekiro, I still pick up for the odd gauntlet run, it's my goat.

Not to glaze but fromsoft does set the bar.
A major reason is that their reputation means they can make game design choices that are questionable that other studios are too afraid to make.
Like if a game has unclear story, convoluted quest flags, cruel and hostile exploration, very steep learning curve etc. ud normally not want to play that game. But if it's from fromsoft, thats kind of expected from them.
4
u/jimbojangles1987 13h ago
It is weird right? Fromsoft is the gold standard. In my eyes they can do no wrong. I mean, I will complain about some boss difficulties or another poison swamp but I do so knowing I want to conquer it and its out of love. They just do it right even when it sucks to play through

u/glytxh 10h ago
Souls is obtuse, but it respects the player to learn, and provides everything you need to learn within the game. I never have to open a wiki or Reddit to work something out. I just need to pay attention and stop rushing.
The learning curves arenāt particularly steep. The skill ceiling is high though. Theyāre just ruthless games.
And the unclear story, for me, is part of the selling point. A world so big and old and shattered that it stands in its own without the need of exposition. Youāre a tiny inconsequential spark in a mad world. You feel that. You donāt need to be told that.
-1
u/sparklikemind 13h ago
I agree they can get away with some wild choices that would normally be considered detriment to the user experience. But we eat this shit up

u/Gamin8ng 13h ago
you can even say sekiro is tthe greatest game, and i wouldnt even say anything on that (cuz its tru to me lol)
3
u/Ashamed-Host-4991 13h ago
Hey I donāt think it was the best but I still liked it all around. Definitely not the masterpiece goty everyone made it out to be. Tho for me the story was the best aspect.Ā
3
u/Andersun_18 13h ago
You can definitely parry more than twice might be a skill issue?
-3
u/sparklikemind 13h ago
It's like 3 times with my mana (chapter 2) and there's cooldown. It is very satisfying when the parry works as you're a rock monkey but I wanna not be limited on it

Wukong looked really fun soni picked it up on sale recently but i have not gotten very far. The combat turned out to be kinda boring? And the exploration is non-existent. I'm only a few hours in, i think i stopped at a big wind themed guy, but i just haven't had the urge to go back.

u/AttyMAL 8h ago
Disagree. I actually found it got worse as the game went on. By the time I got to the prison level, I was pretty much over it. I managed to push through that level and got into the snow level, but had no interest in continuing after that.
2
u/Weird_Troll Platinum Trophy 8h ago
oh that prison is the worst area for sure, chapter 3 just sucks. but 4-6 are amazing

I can see why Sekiro clicks more if parrying is your favorite part of FromSoft games, but Wukong feels like itās aiming for a different kind of combat fantasy. The staff combos, spells, and transformations give it more variety, even if the parry system isnāt as central.

u/TheSquatchMann Platinum Trophy 8h ago
A bit unfair to compare, in my opinion. Sekiro is, by far, one of the greatest, if not the single greatest action-stealth adventure ever put on a screen. Black Myth Wukong is a game from a Chinese company thatās newer to gaming that intentionally combines some level of mild-to-moderate challenge and souls like checkpoints with God of War style high budget cinematic grandeur. They donāt really occupy the same niche in action games.
Iām currently playing through BMW, and itās a genuinely fun and novel experience. By comparing it to Sekiro, of course it looks amateurish, but itās a really fun game thatās well worth a play for anyone who likes a decent challenge, and can be a great way for someone to get into a game that isnāt quite as punishing as the FromSoft games themselves

Wukong is such a weird mix of being technically very impressive with some of the worst character design and grating sound effects Iāve ever heard.
Of the Wu/Woās (kong, long, and chang) itās somehow the most popular while being by far the least of them.

Wokung is a great game . Sekiro is just legendary status alongside bloodborne .

u/kimikoboombap 11h ago
I mean yeah, true.
I'm still going to root for the Black Myth saga.
Especially if they bring a 2nd Black Myth game when 7 years later From couldn't manage to produce a sequel to Sekiro when most people love the game.

I mean this is a sekiro sub and sure anything thatās not sekiro itās a dogshit game. I feel like these two are very different games, and 2 masterpieces in their own right.
Itās just really unfair to compare them, because the combat on each game is completely different. One game needs you to go aggressive and parry attacks with little tools to work with, the other is a dodging fast paced arpg with many tools to work with.
Theres a reason why wukong was the runner up for GOTY.

I had fun fighting the wandering wight in the starting area, he took me like 5 attempts and I was like, well okay if a mini boss is this hard, maybe I really have to learn the combat system and perfect my dodges. Only for there to be a very OP transformation, and really easy main boss fights following. I am also just kinda whelmed with the game, but plan on giving it a real shot eventually. The graphics and setting are really cool but it does seem brain off compared to sekiro sadly. Oh also the story makes no sense (but its a cultural thing I guess)

u/Turbulent_Pin_9392 9h ago
Wukong is 10x better than Sekiro and itās not even close. Itās longer, has more unique enemies, requires more skill than just two button(L1 and r1) mashing, has more than one way to escape an attack, has incredible story derived from real existing myths, with scenery inspired from real places in china. Sekiro is a great, 10/10 game. But if weāre comparing, Wukong would be an 11/10. Bloodborne is also my favorite game number 1 even over Wukong. But Wukong is better than Sekiro and itās not even close.

u/Ashamed_Smile3497 9h ago
Why are any of theee games even being compared when their combat systems are so different? One is parry focused, one is aggression focused with dodge and parry and the third is dodge focused. If you have a preference that's fine but that doesn't make other games bad

Of course a sekiro form will feel this way. But i liked BMW more. The abilities, visuals and designs are what drew me in.
Sekiro just has a really good parry system. Which i like but that's not a big thing for me.
1
u/Confident-Vanilla-28 XBOX 6h ago
Theyāre totally different games? Nothing wrong with liking Sekiro better, I think most people in this sub would agree. I donāt think Wukong is āworseā than Sekiro, itās just a totally different game. You say exploration is non-existentā¦Sekiro is the same in that regard. Theyāre both fairly linear games. Wukong has SO MUCH more content, better graphics, and way more engaging cutscenes. Sekiro parry gameplay might be more satisfying, but Wukong is not worse than Sekiro. They are both great. Just different.

u/Confident-Vanilla-28 XBOX 6h ago
Kinda unfair to compare a Fromsoft soulslike game with some of the best combat mechanics of any video game in history, to an action rpg more akin to God of War that just so happened to be a particular studioās first ever attempt at a full length game. I loved BM:W. It was fairly easy, but such a fun and beautiful game. I think I maybe only struggled on a handful of the 100+ bosses, but the challenging ones were certainly challenging.
1
u/SanguineLoki700 4h ago
Sekiro is much better than any parry based game, I gave up on all they are all bad
1
u/Rydrslydr715 2h ago
I had a lot of fun with both, tho my first run of sekiro was agonizingly painful.
Also wukong and sekiro are two tho somewhat similar games have very different combat styles. And deflect dodging is fun asf to do same as with how deflecting in sekiro is. Also saw u were complaining about how the light attacks suck, well no shit, you gotta finish the combo. Plus you can have varied combos where itās light light light heavy attack tho I feel thatās mainly with the smash stance.
Also the spells are fun asf to use but you have to conserve them as to not just run through your mana. Also you can craft better staffs and armor if youāre doing piss poor damage if you said staffs are craftable.
1
u/Dazzling-Cap6031 4m ago
Sekiro definitely has better combat but itās not THAT much better. Black myth is still a significantly more solid game than even some other from titles.
1
u/bad_apiarist 13h ago
BMW (talk about unfortunate initials) also disappointed me. Your normal attacks feel so pathetic and weak.. and while the dodge game is often tight, a lot of the fights feel like you're waiting on cooldown timers to do zero-skill supermoves.. which is like the opposite of what a soulslike is even supposed to be.
1
u/sparklikemind 13h ago
I will also say that the new God Of War games had amazing weight to the striking and recalling the axe, parrying with shield etc. I could really feel the axe slamming into enemies, loved those games
0
u/sparklikemind 13h ago
I made it to chapter 2 and deleted it. The non-heavy staff hits and combos are just like paper with no weight as you hit enemies. I can't even tell I'm hitting them without watching their life bar.
0
u/bad_apiarist 11h ago
For real. One thing any soulslike needs to have is weapons that feel satisfying to use. Wukong relies on lengthy spammy combos before non-microscopic damage is done. Feels terrible.

Sekiro's centipede monks and Fountainhead stuff just feels alive in a way nothing I've seen from Wukong previews does.
