Does crushing a can mean it can't be recycled? I was taught to flatten cans/bottles etc so they take up less space in the bin and recycling truck

Not very many people get the deposit, just put it in the recycling to get picked up. Deposits are done by weight by me, no barcode to scan

In Finland we have this return machines that you get back some of your money, where cans need to be in good shape. You can also just throw them to metal recycling, where there is no scanning, and you can crush the cans. You won't get money back, but it's still recycling.

Most cities in the US have recycling bins at every house. You crush them then toss them in the recycling bin. You don’t get paid for the can, but it gets recycled

No I believe what they mean is that despite there being a recycle program, many cities and states do not actually recycle. They collect and ship it off elsewhere to be "recycled". It pretty much gets shifted around until it ends up in the dump somewhere, never actually being recycled. The program was a bust.

Aluminum is one of the only things that have a high chance of being recycled. Unlike paper and plastic it is easy and makes money. I lived in places that didn't have recycling pick up and we would save cans and take them to the scrap yard for a little beer cash.
