Lore [Specific Trope] Trapped in a pool

Slides in order: Bree and Jonna (12 Feet Deep), Day and the crocodile (The Pool), Dale (From), Sims (The Sims franchise)

To count, characters have to be trapped in a pool to the degree where they can't easily get out. It could be filled or empty.

I wouldn't want to fight a chimpanzee. However, I would rather take the chance of 5v1 on it rather than the certainty of drowning in that water

316

u/Jazzlike_Union_930 13h ago

you don't need to 5v1 it you just need to be faster than the people 4v1-ing it

130

u/Embarrassed_Lettuce9 12h ago

After the first person bolts, its really just the slowest among the 5 who's getting fucked up

56

u/Dragonkingofthestars 12h ago

and frankly over a long enough period I'd bet on a human to out run or at least out endurence a chimp over distance

I am reminded of the image of a Bonobo standing in water "Smiling" with his hand outstretched to the camera.

Which, for apes, is a sign of hostility... and yet both stupid idiot people and also AI thinks to be a sign of excitement or happiness, saying they'd happily take it's hand. Forgetting that "Baring one's teeth/fangs." is a phrase people use to say someone/something showed aggression.

70

u/ghigoli 11h ago

honestly you wouldn't want to leave the water because if they fighting you're best bet is to drag it down to drown it as we can hold our breath while they can't.

our ability to swim better is our only edge.

78

u/LoonahGBT 9h ago

That's exactly what a murderous chimp who could hold its breath for 5 minutes would say

I don't think anyone in the movie ever does this, and it really bothered me.

12

u/lfg_guy101010 5h ago

There's a lot they didn't do that really bothered me, but i forgive the movie bc it ended being the kind of "so bad, it's good" for me.

I misread this as Primetime for a good minute, and I was really really confused as to what five people and a chimpanzee have to do with Chris Hanson

31

u/Filmologic 12h ago

Maybe it's like a "Better Man" situation where it's a biography but the main character is portrayed as a chimp for reasons

17

u/Turbogoblin999 12h ago

The chimp is a child predator.

There are 5 of you jump him 😭

82

u/Kixisbestclone 13h ago

Or just like, lure him close to the pool and yank him in. Sure one of the guys will have to negotiate their arm, but it’s a chimp, he can’t swim, just drown the fucker.

47

u/RedditBonez 12h ago

In water, chimps will drown

50

u/SWBFThree2020 12h ago

This chimp was doubly weak to water

The director miss understood what Rabies does, and thought it made animals afraid of water instead of unable to swallow water

44

u/OmecronPerseiHate 11h ago

Pretty sure it does both. There's a video that circulates pretty frequently of an Indian guy with rabies and he recoils pretty violently every time the guys with him try to offer him a cup of water.

16

u/VillagerWithAQuest 11h ago

Isn't rabies an irrational hatred and fear of water?

> The disease in humans was characterized by hydrophobia, in which the sick person was simultaneously tormented with thirst and fear of water.

u/SWBFThree2020 12h ago

The guy tries that, but it's an infinity pool looking over a cliff

So the Ape over powers him and tosses him to his death

Out of the 4 girls left, one has a giant open wound from when the Ape attacked them and is bleeding to death

Another is her sister trying to keep the wounded girls head above the water

So there is only two left

Chimps cant swim, drag his ass to the water and get tf out as fast as possible

6

u/Gekidami 6h ago

They try that in the movie. The chimp is stronger at pulling than all of them combined.

33

u/Reaper-Lord69 14h ago

Edit: in this thread, multiple people falling for chimp glaze.

54

u/Reaper-Lord69 14h ago

Nah I'm succumbing to the chimp fear. That scene from Nope fucked me right up

53

u/HollyTheMage 14h ago

It's also accurate. Like I cannot emphasize enough that chimps straight up maul people to the point that zookeepers are often given kill on sight orders if one of them breaks out.

23

u/Turbulent_Series1085 14h ago

Maybe better to just leave them in the jungle then

51

u/HollyTheMage 13h ago

They have literally carried out the closest thing to war that we have seen among animals in the jungle. The Gombe Chimpanzee conflict traumatized Jane Goodall.

The Final battle in It Follows. The girl thought being in the middle of the pool will act as protection from the entity. However the entity then starts throwing things at her, turning the pool as a trap.

228

u/OperatorERROR0919 12h ago

I have no idea if this scene was supposed to be absolutely hilarious, but it absolutely was.

153

u/blondtode 11h ago

Haven't seen the movie but doesn't the one with the gun shoot someone else in the crossfire.....of a completly invisible entity? Like they're looking right at them

82

u/lefauxcompte 11h ago

Yeah it's a shame, this scene kinda ruined the whole movie for me, which I found to be absolutely brilliant up until this point. The entity suddenly changing its behavior and own set of rules was infuriating.

56

u/OmecronPerseiHate 11h ago

I just looked it up and holy shit that was funny. Why were there so many random electronics around the pool? Why was it all stuff that plugs into a wall outlet? Why did the ghost not just get in the pool from the beginning?

Most importantly, how the fuck did that guy manage to shoot his friend in the leg while aiming at an adult sized ghost right in front of him??

62

u/MrJoker699 10h ago

The plan was to trap the entity in the pool and then electrocute it with the devices.

And also that guy couldn’t see the ghost. Only a person who is the target of the entity is able to see it. That’s why that guy shot his friend.

32

u/OmecronPerseiHate 10h ago

Just seems like he'd be able to see that he's aiming at his friend since he can't see the enemy.

18

u/Lans-25 10h ago

They put the electrics there because they were planning on luring the entity into the pool and then electrocuting it, but it won't get in the pool, and luckily for the girl it doesn't fry her when the stuff gets thrown in. The guy can't see the entity, only the girl in the pool can, so he's just shooting air.

4

u/Significant-Way9330 4h ago

I totally believe it's supposed to be funny. For me it was the perfect way to go with the entity. The whole movie it seems unthinking and singularly focused. Then it starts hucking shit.

Hunt from Final Destination 4

I remember hearing about a book with a similar scene

162

u/mtwJarhead 14h ago

It's in Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk

54

u/OmecronPerseiHate 11h ago

That the one with the butthole sucked into the pool drain?

42

u/zykk 11h ago

Along with at least half of his intestines, which he had to bite through in order to free himself, yes!

11

u/Nuttersnutty 10h ago

‘Bite through’? Legit curious

Was he somehow getting strangled by his own intestines and thus needed to chew through it?

18

u/zykk 10h ago

Not strangled, but since the intestines were caught by the suction, he would have drowned unless he chewed through to free himself in order to get to the surface. He had no knife or anything to cut with.

10

u/Blackblood909 8h ago

Ok but how did he angle that?

50

u/IGetOffToWingTearing 13h ago

Not lying, but she didn’t die.

She did have some organs (I think her intestines?) sucked out, but was hospitalized and recovered

39

u/Timo-the-hippo 13h ago

It's freaky but your intestines are not fully connected to your body so when they get sucked out it's not as bad as you think.

22

u/IGetOffToWingTearing 13h ago

I mean as far as I’m aware that still means you gotta live the rest of your life without intestines which sounds like it kinda sucks

22

u/Nice_Blackberry6662 12h ago

As someone with an ostomy, I have to say I think at least the large intestine is kind of overrated.

Positive version: Zima Blue

The transhuman artist at the centre of the story is known for focusing on a specific shade of blue. It turns out his focus on this shade is because he was never human in the first place, he's actually a pool cleaning robot of all things, progressively upgraded until he had sentience then upgraded further until he was a humanoid indistinguishable from other post humans. The colour he's obsessed with is the colour of the pool tiles

His final artistic performance is shucking off all the upgrades to render himself a nonsentient pool cleaning robot once again, confined to a single pool, doing nothing but cleaning the tiles of that specific blue shade for the rest of his existence

Don’t want to ruin too much of the movie. Basically it’s a non malevolent cosmic horror situation. Patches of the world is being taken over by this phenomenon called The Shimmer and its basic method of “attack” is genetic.

Theres much more to it but I think it’s worth a watch to find out. It’s a crazy film with hair raising scenes. Not many jump scares. It lets you glide into being uncomfortable and settle in it for the most part.

Agents of SHIELD, Seeds

A device causes a swimming pool to instantly freeze over, trapping some college kids.

25

u/pokfen 13h ago

Agents of SHIELD season 1 deepcut reference at that.
Do I recall correctly that the device that caused it was later turned into weather controling one and caused a massive hurricane or was it different episode.
I recall a gag scene of Coulson leaving the building only to close the door when outside was CGI created armagedon of a storm.

Yes, that was the same episode! And the actual scene with the door and the storm was Ward.

he would basically commit autoerotic asphyxiation, swimming to the bottom of the pool to masturbate when straining for air. his favorite part was sitting on top of the circulation pump vent because it would form a vacuum on his butt. one day he tries to swim back up but he can't, and he looks back and sees he's tethered to the filter by some sort of black rope. he has to chew through his intestines as they were sucked into the pump. and that's how he became saint gut-free.

I read that in 8th grade, and legit stopped reading the book and returned it to the library. Had night terrors for a week. I aint even gonna unspoiler that comment.

Most of his work is just edgy edgelord shock content. He captured lightning in a bottle with Fight Club and has been chasing increasingly desperate, cheap novelties ever since then.

That’s exactly why mac warns the gang to never put their butts on the pool drain.

I can't believe people actually know and remember this book, and this story specifically. I only know one other person who knows it and that's because she borrowed my book hahaha

Steve Burns on the set of Blue's Clues

Among the reasons he gave for wanting to leave the show was that the empty blue screen room he filmed in felt like acting in an empty swimming pool, and he was afraid he'd be permanently typecast as a children's show character if he stayed any longer.

Not necessarily what the point is, and I don't remember the song's name, but there was that one where the kids went to the swimming pool, and they turned into monsters, then on the other side of the pool's water there was an eldritch realm

How Vinod Chanda murders the son of his murderer in Pantheon.

You Can argue that he got the less horrible dead, since the rest of their family got burned alive

The music video Fantasy by DyE.

Moderately NSFW in both senses of the word, i.e. both sexual content and blood/gore. But it's on Youtube, so it's not that bad.

In the 1967 James Bond film Thunderball, Bond fights a goon at the villain's estate and both fall into a pool.

The bad guys proceed to close a metal cover over the pool, and open a gate connecting to said pool to another pool, this one being full of sharks.

Horribly disappointing movie, but there's a really cool scene in passengers where a character is swimming in a pool on a space ship and they lose artificial gravity and the entire pool turns into a sphere of water and the character is unable to swim to the edge due to the movement of the water.

Does Barb Holland from Stranger Things count? She got trapped in a pool, but it wasn't the pool doing the trapping. It was a hyper-predator from another universe which killed her when she tried to escape

When I was a teenager I only once had a single child in the sims 2... When the little asshole didn't stop playing with his trains and go to school, missed the bus, I sent him to the pool and removed the ladder to let him drown...
