Characters (Hated Trope) Characters written so Badly it sinks an entire Franchise

  1. Yennefer: Lauren Hissrich and her writers absolutely botched the Witcher completely, and it all starts with Yennifer. They absolutely destroyed her character, her motivations, how she interacts with other main characters and so on. There are MANY poorly written characters in this series, but Yennifer is the crux of it and it has destroyed what could have been an amazing show.
  2. Galadriel in RoP: Another main character, that is well beloved in other media, who is just completely destroyed by poor writing. The entire season 1 arc with her was horrible, and now entering season 3, somehow we have seen exactly 0 magic from one of the ages most potent spell casters. Another show where many characters are written terribly, the plot makes no sense at times, and it is tranishing probably the most well known and popular fantasy world.
  3. Taash Dragon Age: Before someone says it, no this has nothing to do with their orientation, but just how it is all approached and done. Its almost like the Babylon Bee wrote a characature of what they think a non-binary person is like, took a character that traditionally has a fairly strict code of guidelines, and then handed it to WB to write. This is, again, another franchise were there is a ton of poor writing around characters and lore and have completely destroyed a once beloved franchise and caused bioware to abandon Dragon Age

Atom Eve (Invincible): is pregnant when everyone is fighting the Viltrumite empire since her fully discovered powers make her stronger than them

Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan): is blown up so that Zeke could get in contact with Eren and couldn't help through most of the finale due to his injuries

Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen): literally everything Ryomen "binding vow" Sukuna does in the the Shinjuku showdown arc

Keelee of Justgirlythings. Is a villain on the SCP universe and the leader of the GOI “Just Girly things” a transphobic, homophobic, and sexist cult that brainwashed people AFAB to act stereotypical “girly” as defined by modern America. Just Girly Things is one of the most skin crawling GOI because of how realistic they are. Like real life transphobia

Mother Gothel of Tangled is a disturbingly accurate picture of emotional abise. Who puts down Rapunzel with jokes and isolate her for her hair

Yuta Okkutsu(Jujutsu Kaisen/Modulo): Yuta Okkotsu has been divisive ever since he rejoined the story. His fans praise him for his character growth between 0 and the main storyline, his dynamic with Rika, and his Copy technique adding a lot of variety to his battles, alongside his more noble spirit and being one of the few people who likes Gojo in-setting. His detractors, however, derisively compare him to a fan's self-insert OC with how varied his powers are, sharing the same bloodline as Gojo, and how clean-cut he is morally. It doesn't help that for fans who hadn't read or seen 0 he all-but comes out of nowhere and gets oodles of screentime right after, salt in the wound, the lion's share of the previous cast they were already invested in got killed off or phased out in a bloodbath of a story arc. People don’t think he’s suffered as much as Yuji and some even rolled their eyes about Modulo being about his grandkids and not Yuji’s.

Hannah McKay(Dexter). The writers just adored her and were really clearly trying their absolute damnedest to make fans like her, yet fans on the whole found her flat, boring and all around unlikable. Dexter rapidly falls in love with her and can't bring himself to kill her despite her more than fitting his code; that she came after the better-received Rita and Lumen marks her as a Replacement Scrappy on top of all that. Other characters frequently praise her and gush about how great a fit she and Dexter are. Her Spotlight-Stealing Squad tendencies got so bad that most of the story in Season 8 revolves around people trying to catch her. In other words: in the final season of a drama about a serial killer, a huge chunk of the plot is about people trying to catch his girlfriend. Scott Buck even went so far as to state he wished he could do a Spin-Off based on the character (which never came to fruition, to the relief of Hannah's hatedom).

Absolute Catwoman(Absolute Catwoman): People feel like there’s no difference between her and the mainline Selina.Selina Kyle/Absolute Catwoman is responsible for Bruce going to jail and Cassandra losing her vocal cords. Bruce took the blame for her stealing from the Falcones. And even though it was by accident Selina blew up Cassandra.Cassandra has a bone to pick with her. People are rooting for Cassandra to beat her.Imagine rooting over an actual murderer vs a thief.

Eureon Greyjoy(Game of Thrones): Euron Greyjoy. He is very popular in the books and he had some fans in Season 7 for Pilou Asbæk's charismatic portrayal, for showing some actual combat prowess, and for putting the aforementioned Ellaria Sand and Sand Snakes in their place. However, this fell apart by Season 8, where Euron was reduced into Cersei's overpowered crony. By the series' end, fans complained about him by name in a petition to re-write the final season — for "merely existing." Other writers go so far as to call Euron a Marty Stu, as he single-handedly shoots a dragon out of the sky three times, a feat no other character has ever accomplished and the fact he regularly exploits Travelling at the Speed of Plot and Offscreen Teleportation. As he appears in the show, he lacks the interest in the occult and dark magic he has in the books, which explain his motivation for helping Cersei and his uncanny luck as a pirate. Fans of the books dislike him for being a watered-down version of the Sorcerous Overlord. that he is in Martin's pages, whereas non-readers dislike him for being a one-dimensional plot device. The most common criticism for Show!Euron is that his over-the-top, wacky personality doesn't really fit in a dark fantasy setting and often leads him to be compared to a Jack Sparrow impersonator. Even Pilou Asbæk himself, who is a fan of the books, has noted his disappointment in what the show did to the character, as he was hoping to play the much more threatening character from the books. One Youtube comment sums it up perfectly with "Hated [Joffrey Baratheon] because of how good he was written. Hated Euron Greyjoy because of how bad he was written."

Characters [Hated Trope] Wasted Characters

Characters who could have been beautiful if not for poor writing fucking them over. I would like to preface that decoy protagonists or characters killed off rather anticlimactically, but with a point to them (IE, Jimmy Darmody [Boardwalk Empire]) do not count, as they’ve served a purpose in the narrative.

  1. Black Noir — While several characters in the Boys (2019) may count, including the Deep, the Boys as a whole, or the themes of the show as a whole, I believe no character shows how poorly the show utilizes its characters than Black Noir, so much so that I believe his usage was better in the comic. Allow me to explain: In the show, Black Noir is a Vought hero who worked for the team Payback in the 1980’s, but who, in a plot to betray his team’s abuser, was rendered permanently mute and rather simple by brain trauma, causing him to become isolated, experiencing hallucinations, and being used as a tool for Stan Edgar. Black Noir’s arc seems to be in its in season 3, leading up to the inevitable confrontation between a Black Noir who tries to overcome his trauma to take down his former abuser, only for him to he abruptly killed by his abusers son for shock value… I do not understand what they were trying to do with this character whatsoever, how he services the shows themes, aside from making you despise Homelander more, when, in the comics, he did the opposite. In the comic, Black Noir is established as enigmatic, deranged, and deeply unsettling. He is a void of personality or conscience and revealed to be a clone of Homelander sent by Vought to kill Homelander if he stepped out of line, but who grew anxious when nothing actually came of it, and, in an effort to serve his purpose, framed Homelander for several horrific crimes to drive him insane and to cause Homelander to become the monster that he was made to extinguish. So, when Billy Butcher goes to the White House, looking to get his cathartic revenge on Homelander, Black Noir dismantles any bit of catharsis we could really get for anything that happens to Homelander. He was a puppet for Vought who establishes that everyone there is ultimately replaceable. Homelander was just another victim, but still a danger, Black Noir a sickening reminder of the rot inside of the company itself. If handled better than the comic, I believe that this character could have been something truly beautiful, and a stark reminder of how fraudulent and fruitless Butcher’s revenge mission actually is.
  2. Armitage Hux (Star Wars) — I do not like Star Wars at all, however, I do think that this character could have been a legitimately solid character in the Sequel series. A zealot for the First Order, whose great love and devotion for it is established in his admittedly amazing speech in the first film, and who, in the second, is cast aside by the figureheads above him. He is forced to watch in resentment as the order he’s sought to create is undermined and stripped away from him by Kylo Ren, ending off the film with this glare towards Ren… then in the film after we find out that this man who space-nuked multiple planets with tears in his eyes at the beauty of the spectacle was undermining his own cause out of spite, and then is killed by a Tarkin-Knockoff… for some reason.
  3. Jahaera Targaryen (A Song Of Ice and Fire) — (SPOILERS FOR HOUSE OF THE DRAGON): Jaehaera Targaryen is the daughter of Aegon II Targaryen in Fire & Blood. This is less about her as a character and what she represents as an archetype. Her father and her aunt fought one another to the death over a throne promised to both by different people, turning into animals and making their finals days absolute hell as a result. They both lost their sanity. By the end of the war, Rhaenyra Targaryen, her aunt, was dead, alongside Aegon II. Rhaenyra left Aegon III to take the throne, while Jaehaera was married to him. A merger of two sides of a family that butchered one another for a throne made of swords, the children, traumatized but unified together. Then she’s murdered by Unwin

Peake, Aegon III remarries to a Velaryon girl, and the good, bittersweet ending is lost.

Characters [Hated Tropes] "She's actually hundreds of years old"

Arisia - Green Lantern by Geoff Johns

In the 80s, DC had Hal Jordan date a 13 year old Arisia. The writer tried to justify it by saying Arisia aged herself up with the ring. In the 2000s Green Lantern run, Geoff Johns tried to retcon it (a good idea) by saying that Hal only thought she was 13. She was actually 240 years old instead. Later on, Grant Morrison finally fixed this for real by simply not acknowledging the relationship at all when mentioning Hal's love interests.

Nowi - Fire Emblem Awakening

Nowi looks and acts like a child, but is actually a 1000-year-old dragon. She is a romanceable support.

Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] Just go get some cops or reporters, bro.

Thumbnail

Backrooms

Like a lot of horror movies, this plot is dependent on characters experiencing something eerie and supernatural, having an easy ability to GTFO, and instead inexplicably choosing to wander down endless hallways. No, just go back and get the cops. There is no reasonable reason for y’all to be investigating this on your own.

—————————————

Prometheus

This is the ultimate example of highly trained professionals acting like fools just to kickstart a plot. Two world-class scientists encounter a terrifying alien lifeform on a hostile planet. Instead of retreating or calling their ship's security team, the biologist literally tries to pet the alien snake like it's a stray puppy.

—————————————

This doesn’t apply to characters who are legitimately trapped, want to hide the weird thing, or otherwise have a reason to keep it from authorities. This is a hated trope about lazy writing.

Hated Tropes Characters with interesting powersets that are used in the lamest way possible

Thumbnail

Inivincible - Atom Eve can create and change the chemical composition of everything that's not organic. She is basically god, yet all she does is build the same pink shields that easily get destroyed all the time

Ben 10 - Gwen is a magician since she's 10 years old, which when she was 10 she did have a pretty diverse powerset. After the Alien Force time skip all she does is build the same pink shields that easily get destroyed all the time(sounds familiar) and easily gets stopped by a blowtorch being thrown in her direction

Also from Ben 10 there's Kevin, who can absorb literally anything he touches, yet all he does is absorb metal and do nothing with it. IK some of you are gonna be like "Oh but absorbing energy and DNA makes him insane" but even setting that aside, there are a lot of possibilities with absorbing different materials which he just never does. The only time he creatively uses his powers is when he absorbs the rubber in his car's tire to bounce

My Hero Academia - Momo can create anything as long as she knows the chemical composition of. Yet she also is useless for most of the time

Characters [Character trope] ridiculous name or appearance. But their feats and lore say otherwise

Post image
3 Upvotes

John prodman is a corpus crewmen who initially was a normal wage slave who quickly climbed the ranks to being a executive as he was able to take out a powerful infested boss alone.

This led him to replacing a zanuka a powerful robot used to kill tenno.

This later led him to being employee of the month and used in motivational videos for other crewmen.

What makes it better is you can encounter him in game by playing one hour in the index. An he isnt easy either. Beating him will cause him to nod and give you his signed autograph (shown above).

What makes it funnier, this was all a internet joke, a solo crewmen killing a infested boss which led to the name John prodmanm and devs added him in the game.

The Lich (adventure time) some early designs portray him as a more cartoony evil necromancer, meanwhile we have a talking rotting corpse in the final design.

Callie & Marie (Splatoon) early concept art portrays them as twins or as outright pallet swaps of each other, the final designs give them a unique design for each (different hair styles and different color pallets)

Characters who get a redemption at the end of the show, but on a rewatch you remember how not nice they are.

Snape - Harry Potter - "always" gets thrown around a lot, button a rewatch you wonder if there was much of a reason for him to bully a child over a slight from his own childhood?

Endeavor - My Hero Academia - Endeavor gets a good bit of redemption by the end of the show, but he pushed his children, abused them, and arguably created a bigger villain in doing so.

Chuck Bass - Gossip Girl - one of the fandoms fave characters, who becomes loveable through the show, until you rewatch the early episodes where he tries to r*pe an underage girl?

Groups [Difficult trope] The show acknowledges that oppression is bad, and that the status quo needs to be fixed. However there are in-universe reasons as for why both are still an issue. There's also the matter of the ill-intentioned extremist who capitalizes on it.

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Adam Taurus, Sienna Khan, Ilia Amitola from RWBY

So the show RWBY repeatedly showcases how the oppression of the faunus takes many forms, and protagonist Blake Belladonna points out how the White Fang was created as a  response to Society, with Ilia Amitola representing a sympathetic reason for using violence to get results.

Here's the issue. RWBY Critics try to claim that Adam Taurus is somehow Remnant's version of Malcolm X. He's not. He's Louis Farrakhan expy. SIENNA KHAN is the Malcom X.

Sienna and Malcom both sought Violence with moderation. Not wanting outright war, just wanting rights and for society to be afraid of oppressing minorities.

But just as Malcolm X was murdered by extremist members of his own organization for being a moderate, so too was Sienna Khan murdered by Adam Taurus for the same thing.

And Louis Farrakan is a hate preacher, not a civil rights activist, despite how many people try to turn a blind eye to him going to Iran and preaching death to america.

But again, the problem with how the status quo is not fixed is due to three factors that RWBY Critics do not acknowledge.

One? Jacques Schnee remaining in power has influence across the kingdoms, and people would rather have dust at low costs, ignoring the exploits of minority workers.

Its important to note that people would rather defend capitalism to one degree or another due to different "think tanks" promoting a fear and misunderstanding of what socialism involves, as well as historical revisionism of FDR and Teddy Roosevelt.

IRL, the United Nations works with many countries that exploit Africa, and even destabilize said countries. Many coups aren't just caused by the CIA, but even the UK and Russia.

Two, Salem prefers humanity at each other's throats, and regularly has her agents pit humans and faunus against each other, as part of her goal of dividing humanity. She is equal opportunist in who she has work for her, but designs plans so that humanity will always have a reason to divide against each other.

THREE. IRONWOOD. Two council seats, and yet he ONLY uses them to get whatever he wants, not only ignoring Faunus rights, but allowing Jacques to abuse his wife and kids.
This also leads into one of the earlier RWBY Volumes where Blake Belladonna calls out Ozpin on his failure to improve wellbeing for faunus students.

You wanna know why the teachers refused to take action on Cardin bullying Velvet? Look at Cornell University. Schools try to cover up every last act that their students do. I was nearly murdered in college for being Jewish, and the school forced me to keep quiet about my attackers.

Fisher Tiger, Hody Jones, Arlong and Jimbei from One Piece

Nami, whose family was oppressed by Arlong, acknowledges this while at Fishman Island.

That while Arlong had every right to hate humans for oppressing fishmen?

The problem was that the World Government kept trying to pit humans and fishmen against each other in order to maintain slavery and oppression.

And that led to King Neptune forming an alliance with the Strawhat Alliance, who protected Neptune's daughter against the Celestial Dragons.

Furthermore, Hody Jones, who never suffered said slavery but did deal with humans, represents how extremists will harm their own people in order to try to hurt their opposing side.

This has many IRL examples

But what's important is that One Piece acknowledges that the status quo and oppression are bad things , and that the Revolutionary Army is justified in opposing the World Government.

But with the World Government enforcing slavery and racism at the top, and people like Arlong or Hody Jones creating fear of Merman at the Bottom?

There is struggle to create equality at both the Top and Bottom forms of society, and that parallels many such cases IRL as well.

Jimbei had hoped to prevent slavery by assisting the world government....the world government used him as a puppet, so he left the WG.

Amon, Earth Queen, Kuvira, and Prince Wu

The Equalist movement was created out of a protest against how bender groups like The Triad would oppress non-benders.

They have a good point, and you see in the third book how The Earth Queen uses the Dai Lee to oppress people within the kingdom too.

But let's look at who is in charge.

Chairman Raikou who is not the most competent dude.

Prince Wu, incredibly incompetent and self-interested.

Tenzin, who is trying to restore the Air Tribes after the Fire Nation's war.

Fire Lord Izumi, busy trying to restore the Fire Nation's honor after 100 years of imperialism.

With movements like Kuvira, the Red Lotus, and The Earth Queen, so many large crises prevent the opportunity for social reform and such.

Powers [Funny trope] They seem strong until you read the lore... at which point you find out they are just WAY to much.

Thumbnail

-Kirby (It's the name ya should know)

For the most part Kirby games have a pretty jarring final bosses. Star allies for example has a final boss called "Void Termina" which at first seems like a giant in some sort of outer world and reading the lore confirms that the cult of the game is summoning him as he is the "True destroyer of worlds" and is one of the MANY gods or god-like beings Kirby has slain just because it came up.

-Doomguy (Doom)

While Doomguy definitely is no slouch in game the events of the game, aside from the actual feat, makes it apparent that he can kill the supreme ruler of hell in a one on one battle who was also revealed to have created all living things.

-Joker (persona five)

Yeah most of these are just when compared to the final bosses and this is not much of an exception. The malevolent god who's name is to complicated for me is the manifestation of humans greed and control, which if you've ever been alive ever is enough of a hint to how strong he is. and joker defeated him, even with help

I'm low-key larping all of these. except for kirby cuz he da goat

Characters [Loved trope] They have a no kill rule. But it is more of "I'll try my best, but if you insist... Aight."

Thumbnail
gallery
307 Upvotes

1) "You left me no other choice!"

Especially obvious with Powerplex who is somewhat understandable villain. Mark tries to save him multiple times, and still manages to spare him. But if the villains insist on it being fight to the death and are too dangerous... (Invincible from, uhm, Invincible)

2) "They are trying to kill us Harry! Stop sparing them!"

"Remus, are you aware what happens to human body if you are stunned and ram the ground from half a mile?"

Especially loved because while his mastery of expeliarmus starts as "I am trying to be mercifull," it develops into "don't fear a man who practices thousands cuts, fear a man who practiced one cut thousand times." (Harry Potter from, well take a guess)

3) Old Shatterhand from... This one is actually named after his "brother," Winnetou. Tries to give every villain a chance, but if they are actively under attack, he has no quarrel killing 20 enemies on one page. And while the fact that lot of the main villains gets "Disney death," aka hoisted by their own petard or by some secondary character is rather lame, it is somewhat explored. Such as in the "In Kordofan" where he realises his attempt to give the villain another chance caused many, many deaths when the Bad Guy escaped and kept being evil. And very much hates himself for being weak.

Characters (Disliked trope) Character that starts out as a regular member of their kind is turned into the most important and best one ever

Thumbnail
gallery
122 Upvotes

I feel this trope can sometimes ruin the core depth of a character and can make previous versions look weak and mischaracterised in comparison

The Doctor (Doctor Who) - The first run of the show depicts the Doctor as one of the time lords, with other Time Lords being around him and in the universe. In the modern run, it’s shown he’s the last of them following a war, but still just a regular one that happens to be a survivor. Then, Chris Chibnall made it so they are literally the first time lord ever, their powers made the entire race and they are older than the universe, which just seems weird for a characters who’s basically a fun time-travelling space hippie

Anakin Skywalker - the way he’s described in the OT, you get the idea he was a just a regular Jedi who was tempted down the path of evil by the Emperor, possibly even because he’s weaker than other Jedi. This makes it so Luke has to surpass his father’s legacy and reject the dark side. Then the Prequels made Anakin space Jesus, who can do no wrong, which also means they have to show the Jedi as flawed and corrupted enough to let the literal chosen one be turned away, undermining the Jedi and making Luke seem like nothing special

Wolverine (don’t mind this one as much) - Started as just the next character to join the X-men. Retconned to be a 200 year old triple war veteran unkillable samurai aristocrat capable of killing all the X-men.

Characters [Somewhat understandable, but can come as weird] Character exists in a setting where slavery exist and they own slave(s), but it is not the topic of the story... But they are still suppossed to be decent guys, so we are kind of repeatedly told how nicely they treat their slaves.

I don't necessarily hate it, I can get that characters don't need to be completely on vibe with my own moralty, and I think you need to be - don't make me say the phase - to think that just because the main character is ok with something, author has to be. Sometimes they just want to say that their world isn't the friendliest place where only the Big Bad is a problem. But it can come as weird, especially if it is treated as "actually good" and not just "less bad than others."

1) Harry Potter from, uhm, Harry Potter

Gets to own Kreacher in book 7, rather late in the story, after Hermione tried to get someone else on board of "slavery kinda bad" for 4 books. Him being somewhat decent owner actually plays in his favor, when Kreacher doesn't sabotage their side (unlike as in book 5, when Harry's uncle Sirius, while generally decent was... Not a good guy towards Kreacher, even if for somewhat understandable reasons.)

Several years and several controversies later, everyone is going batshit about this plotline.

2) Nathaniel Garro from Warhammer 40k

The universe that pretty much coined the word Grimdark, and even the struggle is pretty much "oppressive regime against literal Dark Gods." The first half of Flight of the Eisenstein - one of the best books in the franchise - is told pretty much from the point of Garro's slave, and by The Emperor, his constant yapping about how good man Garro is for sparing him and how proud is he to serve him and sacrifice himself gets annoying at a point.

3) John Carter from... John Carter

Actually interesting, because every other serie by the author is "John Brown isekai." Both Tarzan and David Innes gets send to other world and upon seeing slavery, they go "absolutely not." Carter gets send to Mars and as a Confederate officer doesn't bat an eye that it exists... Until he realises that there, people like him ("Red Martians") are also getting enslaved by the much less human Green Martians. Still opens with a mention about how much his slaves down in Dixie loved the guy.

4) Ashley Wilkes from Gone with the Wind

I have to admit I am not sure how intentional this one was. But for someone who gets constantly presented as this very moral person, him being good is pretty much limited to being vaguely antislavery and more of "aight" then ardent Secessionist. I am not sure if that was just Scarlett simping him hard, but when it comes to his role in the story... He seemed like the worst one from the main four characters, while still playing "I am very honorable, actually" card to me.
