Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] Adults losing their abilities just because they grew up

Thumbnail

Codename: Kids Next Door (KND): The moment an operative turns 13, they are officially considered a "teenager" (and a future adult enemy). They are hunted down, strapped to a machine, and their memories of their entire childhood, their friends, and their achievements are forcefully wiped clean.

Strike Witches: In this world, magic is a biological trait, but it comes with a cruel expiration date. It only functions during adolescence. As soon as the girls hit their late teens or early 20s, their magic naturally fades away and permanently dies out, forcing veteran soldiers to retire from the frontlines.

It sucks seeing badass characters reduced to helpless bystanders just because their biological clock ran out.

Characters [Tragic trope] One man ' s blessing is another man ' s misfortune

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Scenes where characters have to hear or see someone else talking about or doing the blessing , knowing the same "blessing" just only cause misfortune to them.

Parasite - The rich woman is talking about the flood as just mildly raining behind Mr Kim, and thanking the weather for clearing the air. It's only just mildly inconvenient for them to postpone the camping trip while for the Kim family (main characters), they just lost their house, jobs, possesions and have to live in shelter just because of that same rain.

The Hunger games - Haymitch watches the Capitol kids playing with fake swords and acting like their idol tributes like in Hunger game, knowing that same game is just a death sentence for him and other poor children and even sadder that other capitol children won't need to be in that game.

Also in the Hunger game novel, the Capitol citizens like to visit famous battle arena and reneact the scenes for fun.

Characters [Loved Trope] When the obviously untrustworthy bastard actually keeps his word

Thumbnail
gallery
2.0k Upvotes

-Gortash from Baldur's Gate 3: He's an ambitious tyrant, a master manipulator, the chosen of an evil god, and he's literally proposing that you two should work together to take over the world. As a player, you naturally assume that this is just a temporary alliance and that he'll betray you the moment he gets the opportunity but if you actually play along with his deal, Gortash is remarkably straightforward about the plan. He genuinely wants to rule alongside you, even getting annoyed when YOU break the agreement because he actually trusted you on the matter.

-Soldier Boy from The Boys: While he isn't a mastermind like Gortash, he is still an arrogant asshole and a Supe who was essentially the Homelander of the previous generation. His deal is simple: help him get revenge on Payback (his previous team), and he will help The Boys kill Homelander. You would expect that once Homelander is dead, or once the Boys have outlived their usefulness, he'd simply turn on them. But that's not what happens. He actually sticks to that arrangement, and the irony is that Soldier Boy is the one who keeps getting betrayed. Payback betrayed him, the Boys betray him, and when he allies with Homelander, he gets betrayed once again just because Soldier Boy wanted to be out of the picture to fuck and inhale drugs to his heart's content.

-Oedon Chapel Dweller from Bloodborne: After a boss fight, you can encounter this creature with no visible legs, long arms, and a dry face. He tells you that you should send people to the chapel so they can stay safe throughout the night. Of course, your immediate reaction is basically "the fuck? He's a MONSTER. He's probably going to eat the NPCs or something if I send them here." but Bloodborne is deliberately playing with your prejudices and instincts. The Chapel Dweller is actually just a kind and harmless guy who wants to keep people safe throughout the night. He doesn't force anyone to come to him, and he is aware that his appearance scares people away, so he maintains some distance from the visitors.

Characters (Disliked trope) Character that starts out as a regular member of their kind is turned into the most important and best one ever

Thumbnail
gallery
127 Upvotes

I feel this trope can sometimes ruin the core depth of a character and can make previous versions look weak and mischaracterised in comparison

The Doctor (Doctor Who) - The first run of the show depicts the Doctor as one of the time lords, with other Time Lords being around him and in the universe. In the modern run, it’s shown he’s the last of them following a war, but still just a regular one that happens to be a survivor. Then, Chris Chibnall made it so they are literally the first time lord ever, their powers made the entire race and they are older than the universe, which just seems weird for a characters who’s basically a fun time-travelling space hippie

Anakin Skywalker - the way he’s described in the OT, you get the idea he was a just a regular Jedi who was tempted down the path of evil by the Emperor, possibly even because he’s weaker than other Jedi. This makes it so Luke has to surpass his father’s legacy and reject the dark side. Then the Prequels made Anakin space Jesus, who can do no wrong, which also means they have to show the Jedi as flawed and corrupted enough to let the literal chosen one be turned away, undermining the Jedi and making Luke seem like nothing special

Wolverine (don’t mind this one as much) - Started as just the next character to join the X-men. Retconned to be a 200 year old triple war veteran unkillable samurai aristocrat capable of killing all the X-men.

Lore "Is it possible?" "Yes, but..."

Thumbnail
gallery
764 Upvotes

Examples:

  • Bear cavalry (Far Cry Primal and various media) - So, can bears become cavalry? Kind of; technically, bears would be the perfect animals for predator-based cavalry because they'd eat anything from grass and moss to the corpses of your enemies. The problem is that bears are solitary animals, so having an entire cavalry force of them would be a mess; not only that, but their running style would not work for saddles. Also, it would be nearly impossible to develop husbandry with bears.
  • Tomacco (The Simpsons) - In the episode "E-I-E-I-(Annoyed Grunt)," Homer accidentally mixed the tobacco seeds with tomato seeds and fertilized them with plutonium, which made a mutated plant called tomacco. The fruits would be incredibly addictive while still being considered vegetables meaning they could be sold without legal regulation. Tomatoes and tobacco are part of the same family (Solanaceae), so not only is hybridizing the two plants possible, it actually happened. Rob Baur, a farmer inspired by the show, actually made a Tomacoo plant; the problem is that it contains deadly levels of nicotine, so it wouldn't be an incredibly addictive snack.
  • ODM Gear (Attack on Titan) - This is going to be a bigger stretch, but technically the idea behind ODM Gear is technologically possible; the problem is that a normal human would die from the intense core strain and G-force. Not only that, but you'd need a lot of force to move like Levi. In the show, there is a special mineral called Iceburst, which specifically allows ODM Gear to produce intense levels of steam force with small gas canisters.
  • Eywa (Avatar) - Eywa is the All-Mother of Pandora, the goddess of the Na'vi. Upon closer inspection, you'd notice that the moon world's entire biosphere is part of one large connected network. Specifically, plants like the spirit trees and the fungi that save Spider are all part of one interconnected system. In real life, this is kind of possible; fungi are known for forming large connected networks, and the largest organism in the world is a giant cluster of trees. So the idea of an entire planet having an entire fungal network is 100% plausible; the thing is that everything else about Ewya is straight-up magic. Like how Spider was mutated with a kuru, which let him bond with spirit trees, or how it can control the animals. Not only that, but Ewya herself is a physical being in the Spirit World.

Characters Character turns down what they had been striving for

Cars - Throughout the movie, McQueen's goal was to win the final race, so he'd be the first rookie to win the Piston Cup and later sign with Dinoco. When he has the chance to win the race, he stops at the finish line and pushes The King to the end. Despite not winning, Tex offers him a chance to race for Dinoco, which he also turns down, deciding to stay with Rusteze.

This also applies to some extent in the 3rd movie, in which McQueen gives up his last race so that Cruz will get her first

Dr. Strange - Throughout the movie his reason for wanting to learn magic was so he could go back to being a surgeon. However, he eventually accepts the role of earth's protector and sorcerer supreme

The name of the Spica team's coach is Okino—a name given by fans because he shares it with his voice actor, even though the script suggested his name would be Ryo Nishizaki (Uma Musume Pretty Derby)

The term "hybrid" was coined by fans and is widely accepted to refer to humans who have made a pact with a demon to partially transform into one—distinct from fiends, which are demons that have possessed human bodies (Chainsaw Man)

Titanoboa(End of Oak Street): The giant snake sneaks across the entire house without making a sound and would've easily swallowed them whole if one of the kids didn't spot its body and shoot it with an arrow.

Antarctic Polar Bear(Journey of Ice and Steel): A larger variant of the Arctic Polar Bear that managed to silently board a ship and sneak up on two crewmates fighting with one another. Since everyone is robotic the bear isn't that dangerous but still terrifying.

Characters Innocence is scary. When a character can commit or witness acts of unspeakable violence or evil and genuinely don't see anything wrong with it because they don't know any better. Be it because of mental illness, a troubled upbringing, or dissonant cultural norms.

  1. Orks in Warhammer 40K. They're biologically wired to see wanton violence as fun and see nothing wrong in engaging with it. Comic by u/superfeyn
  2. The Pyro in Team Fortress 2. He horrifically murders people with fire, but in his disturbed mind he's blowing rainbows out of a trumpet and having fun with everyone.
  3. Toyohisa Shimazu from Drifters. While a man of honour, he was born and raised to be a bloodthirsty samurai who earns glory by hunting enemy heads. At one point he orders the commander of a surrendered fortress to commit seppuku like it's the most normal thing in the world. When the commander refuses to commit seppuku, Toyohisa kills him without hesitation. We later learn that the guy deserved it, but it's still a little unnerving how matter-of-fact he was about the whole affair.

Characters [Less common trope] characters with a present father and an absent mother

Notably not a DEAD mother, just a mother who straight up is not there and in their lives. I could literally only think of two examples.

  1. Nate Wright (Big Nate)- they never go too in depth with it, but Nate’s mom divorced his father and left. Nate barely even knows her, she’s a stranger to him. A lot of people theorize that Mrs. Czerwicki has functionally become a mother figure to him, a thought which I love.

  2. Charlie Morningstar (Hazbin Hotel)- we don’t know crap about Lilith, Charlie has her number but she sure never picks up the phone. Lucifer is in her life, they have a strenuous relationship but he is there.

This is in reference to a tweet I've seen quite a lot and it surprises me how many pieces of media I've seen with this in it. Spoilers for most of these.

Resident Evil (2026) - Bryan Hodukivich is a medicial courier who takes a double-paying order to deliver a cooler ASAP to a big city. It turns out the city has just succumb to a zombie virus in a matter of hours. Bryan's package is a stabilizer for the cure, contained in a lab in the city. He's the last ditch effort of scientists working on that cure.

Project Hail Mary (2025) - Ryland Grace is a scientist and school teacher who's career didn't go as well as he wanted. He becomes the titular "hail mary" against his will when the sun starts going out, after he discovers the cause and all the others who could fix things are killed in an accident.

REC (2007) - Angela and Pablo. A news reporter and her camera operator are doing a tag-along with firemen for a news show not many people watch. On a routine call to an apartment building, a zombie virus and ensuing panic spread with all the building's residents put on quarantine. Now they are the only ones who can document the story of the people trapped inside as it unfolds.

Half-Life (1998) - Gordon Freeman is a theoretical physicist at a big facility who is part of an experiment which causes an alien invasion. At first his goal is just to survive, but then he becomes humanity's last hope from interdimensional aliens after the military kills most everyone else and tries to kill him, in a coverup.

Iron Lung (2026) - Breaking the rules a bit here, but Simon is a convict forced to operate a dinky sub on an ocean planet of blood as part of his punishment. He's initially just going on a suicide mission for minor data collection of the planet but discovers something huge and becomes a bastion for humanity.

Edit for minor plot corrections

Edit 2: Covering up spoilers for Resident Evil since it's recent. I forgot reddit could do that, sorry! I thought the first warning about how there were spoilers for each film was enough :(

Edit 3: added the date to Iron Lung

Characters Acts tough to hide their trauma or supposed weakness

Thumbnail

I did post this trope some time ago but one more time won't hurt, I'm always interested in seeing some more examples since I really like it whenever I see it. So let's get on with this.

1-2 - Undine (Claymore) - the first time we see her is when she acts cocky towards weaker claymores gathered to combat extremely powerfull monsters, claiming they would only drag the stronger warrriors down. She also claims to be the strongest of all the claymores despite being number 11 (11th strongest out of 47) and thinks her weaker comrades would only force her to babysit them.

Turns out that in the past she was a feeble warrior who found solitude in her close friend and survived thanks to them. But it was her friend who died in battle instead of her, and Undine was too weak to protect her, leading to a lot of survivor's guilt. Undine took her friend's sword (which is why she's the only one with two swords) and swore to avenge her by becomming the strongest warrior. Her guilt is why she doesn't want the weaker claymores to fight directly, she doesn't want to loose anyone close to her again, especially those she feels responsible to protect.

Also yes, both images are the same person, she's not naturally buff, only uses her powers to make herself buff when around others, but turns skinny and frail when alone without altering her body.

3-4 - Hellion (Darkest Dungeon) - she's the most outwardly agressive of all the heroes in the game, as the narrator describes her: "Barbaric rage and unrelenting savagery make for a powerful ally".

When she was young her people set an ambush, but she was too afraid to fight, resulting in the death of all the warriors beside her. The reason she's so agressive is to show both to her dead comrades and to herself that she's not a coward (now i haven't played Darkest Dungeon 2 which i know adds more context so sorry if i miss something. I also know that a lot of the story, including characters' backstories is purposefully vague and open for interpretation, so there's also room for misinterpreation).

5-6 - Zuko (Avatar The Last Airbender) - a banished prince of the Fire Nation. Ever since we meet him he has a very short temper and severe anger issues. Even his own crew sees him as an asshole.

We learn that he was banished for showing care for the lives of young soldiers sent to their death, disrespecting his father in the process and refusing to fight him. He was labeled a coward and banished only allowed to return if he captures the Avatar.

  • Hibernatus: Guy gets accidentally cryopreserved from 1905 to 1970. To avoid an emotional shock that might be fatal, early-20th century life is reconstituted in the whole estate.
  • The Astrosmurf: This smurf's whole life revolves around his dream of going into space. When the rocket he built and boarded fails to take off, the rest of the village transport him and the rocket to a rocky place and cosplay as moon people.
  • Good Bye, Lenin!: Communist woman from East Berlin falls in a coma a couple weeks before the Berlin wall falls, wakes up after Germany reunification. Again, to avoid a fatal shock, relatives basically cosplay East Germany life despite their lifestyle having been having westernized.
  • The Truman Show: This one is a little different, since the deception's aim is not to benefit the deceived. Also, we do not see how the fake world came to be, we're just dropped into it. As the movie starts, Truman is the character of a reality TV show designed for advertisement.

  1. Reed, from the fantástic 4 movie, feels like his neurodivergency is something thats it's wrong with him, and he is afraid that his son Franklin could go to the same hardships

  2. From God of War, Kratos, even when causing evil without much of a thought, showed no intentions for his daughter to be the ruthless warrior he was, even though Calliope was considered unfit by Spartan standards. Having calmed considerably by the time he settles in Midgard, he's very adamant about making sure that Atreus doesn't turn out like him, let alone how he used to be.

Lore Evolutionary Horror

Shin-Godzilla: Throughout the entire movie, Godzilla constantly evolve into more and more grotesque form, only ended by the success of the plan to froze it. Even then, its final form shows humanoid creatures that presumably would have been controlled by a hivemind, all to destroy the humanity that has caused it so much pain and suffering.

Seaborn (Arknights): Created by an ancient, alien civilization, The Seaborn were passive sea creatures. After encountering the native Aegirean, the Seaborn for unknown reasons became hostile. From then on, The Seaborn, united by their Will of We Many, they seek to assimilate all life within themselves as a form of self-preservation. Them and the Aegir have been stuck in a constant arm-race, with the Aegirian even having to resort to create Seaborn hybrid super soldiers known as "Abyssal Hunters" to combat the seaborns, especially Leviathans (aka the Firstborns) like Ishar-Mla.

But it wasn't only them who had to deal with the Seaborns. They are considered an existential threat for all of the land of Terra. They unleashed a great tsunami, which sunk half of the coastal nation of Iberia, ending its Golden Age of naval supremacy, and this was only them getting started. In an alternate, non-cannon scenario, Ishar-Mla possessed one of the aforementioned Abyssal Hunter, fused with the ocean (which is alive) and started the apocalypse. It wiped out all of Terra, evolving itself every time it is driven back. It overwhelmed the technological supremacy and superweapon of Columbia (US), the Steam Knight mechs of Victoria, The Gun Knights of Laterano (Vatican, don't ask) and even the God-fragments of Yan or the reality bending Collapsals, etc... Eventually, humanity would be driven to a last city, but even it would soon fall, leaving only one survivor, as they were the anchor for the possessed hunter.

Oh and did I mentioned they have a cult worshipping them?

Personality [Funny Trope] Enemies when they’re off the clock

i love when two characters are enemies because of what they do, and then the second there’s no reason to fight they’re completely normal with each other.

Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog (Looney Tunes). spend the entire workday fighting over the sheep, then the whistle goes off and they immediately stop, clock out together and say goodnight. next morning they clock back in and start fighting again like nothing happened.

Ralph and Felix (Wreck-It Ralph). spend all day playing the villain and hero of Fix-It Felix Jr because that’s literally their job. once the arcade closes they stop playing their roles and just go back to their normal lives.

Wreck and Nice (To Be Hero X). they both joined TREEMAN wanting to become heroes, but Wreck ended up being cast as Nice’s villain and their fights were staged to build Nice’s Trust. off camera they’re still best friends and just hang out normally.
