Discussion đŁď¸ Pro AI people are out of their mind

What I LOVE about the new AI -> SI thing, is that it is going to expose exactly who is a braindead-rightwinger once they start referring to it as SI. Because the only ones who are going to be using it are those that love to suck on the orange sausage.

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas 16h ago
Yeah itâs literally just a ârebrandâ because Trump thinks thatâs enough to fix AI reputation. Canât believe how stupid this world is getting.

u/stonk-420 14h ago
It was most likely another money scheme. Someone was buying a bunch of si domain names and now there selling for a lot of money

We should not even call it AI it's not. It's a damn learning model algorithm
28
u/Lily_Thief 11h ago
AI used to describe a whole field of different approaches to making a computer make choices, before it got narrowed to one particularly inefficient approach.
Then they started pretending that new narrow AI definition and the Sci-Fi one overlapped somehow
10
u/Fun-Mission-6068 12h ago
Yeah, that's a whole other thing that pisses me off as someone who really likes Artificial Intelligence. Everyone's like "AI this" and "AI that", but I'm like, it's just a simple program ya'll... Lemme know when it can start thinking for itself.
It's just like VR too. All these VR headsets aren't VR, they're just motion tracking controllers and screens an inch from your face.
6
u/theboomboy 10h ago
I think it's good because now the more technical "machine learning" name is reserved for actual research and potentially good stuff, and the name "AI" can be assumed to be slop

agree regardless of the pro\anti debate this is a trump thing, he likes renaming things so his cultists (and people who find it economically advantageous to pretend to side with him) will switch everyone else will keep calling it with the old name, like with Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico...

u/ThePlasticCupOfWater 8h ago

→ More replies (1)39
u/thedafthatter 14h ago
Why does everyone shit on her?
33
u/AkaIsSleptOn 14h ago
Her typical comics are very rinse and repeat âMAGA/Right wing badâ, and they often spread around A LOT by other people, so some people just got sick of seeing them.
10
u/Illustrious-Sense194 11h ago
Most of them are also deeply annoying and unfunny. Its like if a comedian got on stage and went "maga bad amiright guys?" And that was it, she just said that over and over again thats the entire bit.
→ More replies (1)2
u/LetsPlay2D 8h ago
while maga/right wing IS bad, getting spammed with literally anything will get you annoyed about that thing, so its kinda fair ig
4
u/NaChoR_prro 8h ago
Sometimes is hard to take some people seriously, specially when they say things like "the other side bad" in a subjective discussion
16
u/RealCakes 13h ago
Because none of her comics are ostensibly "funny" and often dont have a punchline. She doesnt usually have bad takes but it just feels... pedantic I guess? I wish she put more effort into the delivery as the message is fine
6
6
u/Arky_Lynx 11h ago
While I and most of us here definitely agree with her politically, the problem comes with her comics very often just feeling like beating a dead horse over and over, "MAGA bad" presented in a way that's just more than extremely obvious with no real joke, like a "haha am I right guys" that just feels like validation-seeking way more than wanting any real discussion.
3
u/Nave-Nave 6h ago
I think she gets too much hate though. Of all the shitty reddit users with moderate clout, the most milquetoast one is the one who gets the most hate. People treat her like she's the second coming of Fransisco Franco for just being a tad bit annoying in her messaging and a few other minor controveries.
3
u/Arky_Lynx 6h ago
Oh I can agree with that. I just chose to ignore her political comics (she is more than capable of telling good jokes outside of those, as shown with the original comment) and scroll past. Going out of your way to shit on her is just weird and sad.
3
u/ThePeoplesPoetIsDead 10h ago
They aren't funny and are all just strawman arguments with people who disagree with the author; the lowest form of political art. Also the art is amateurish and the writing is usually pretty clunky.
This would be fine if it was easy to ignore, but it gets posted under every political post in every left of centre community and upvoted 100 times by people who love seeing their own opinions in comic form. This is made worse because associating your political beliefs with something cringe, like an unfunny, poorly made, soapbox-y comic diminishes the cultural cachet of being part of the cool side of politics.

I posted this in another sub. You'll need to swipe/scroll to see my comment.
https://www.reddit.com/r/MurderedByWords/s/PHlunhjHfm
A few moments later I got a message from Reddit, not the subreddit mods, that my post was removed via automation for hate speech. I quoted an article about Eric Schmitt (R) MO with some of his statements to a conservative conference.
I appealed the warning with sources and a human with Actual Intelligence removed the hate speech warning and restored the comment. I guess it's good that AI realizes they spout hate, but it couldn't understand the context of the post.

I did Games Dev at university, I hate the sudden wide usage of the term AI, when some company says their system is powered by AI, there's no way to know if they're using an LLM, simpler machine learning, some thirsty generative slop machine, or a (relatively) basic algorithm.
All we can do is try to dodge them all till the bubble bursts.

u/SatiesUmbrellaCloset 17h ago
incidentally, the word "shit" also begins with the letter s
16
u/MrHandSanitization 14h ago
So does "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". But that wouldn't fit, because LLMs aren't Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, and marketing likes "super" and not "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

You know the AI hype is officially dead when they start releasing a well-accepted acronym to generate artificial hype. The AI chuds have a raging hard-on right now while the average person does not give a shit. This bubble is getting weaker and larger every day. At this point the billionaires are so deep in the hole, it's a fight for survival at this point. When the bubble finally burst, it will be a glorious day of reckoning but unfortunately it will drag the entire world economy down with it. We'll all be left with nothing in the post-AI hype era. I think this will be a good thing overall. Humanity needs a reality check.

I'm just so disappointed how this whole fiasco got SO CLOSE to my own claim. I claimed over a year ago "AI should be called SI(Synthetic Intelligence) Because it's a result of processes reducing an input dataset to a trained model, it makes more sense to call it Synthetic"
Fucking name rater comes out after renaming the gulf and Lake Ontario and decides to take a swing and a massive miss at AI. Frustrating.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Nobody_at_all000 14h ago
Artificial sounds like a better descriptor to me, since artificial often means an imitation of the real thing, while synthetic means the real thing but made artificially. Like cubic zirconium vs. lab grown diamonds
3
u/idkfawin32 14h ago
See, I understand that. But when I think "Artificial" I always tend to think "specifically designed", like a car or a rocket. Whereas the emergent behavior of AI models are "Arrived to" through several complicated processes. But OpenAI can't know with 100% certainty how it's product will behave with a given input.
I guess it's all silly to worry about what things are called anyways.
7
u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 16h ago
It's the fact AI is literally not intelligent and artificially mimics it, and these people think it's smarter than them... I mean that says it all, doesn't it?

3
u/dancingthroughstars 16h ago
Superintelligence is already an actual term, and it makes sense that theyd switch to naming AI after it,because a huge part of AIs bullshit marketing is claiming that superintelligence/AGI is right behind the corner.
So,they change its name to super intelligence to mess with the memory of boomers and keep investor money flowing, keeping the con going.
Dunno, gives me hope if they're getting this desperate.

Of fucking course they're going to fold for this bullshit, too.
Things are no longer 'sliding' toward idiocracy - they are hurtling there like the meteor which killed the dinosaurs.
But in my head, any time I read this, all I will think is 'stupid idiot'.

This isn't a rebranding. This is a real term showcasing the evolutionary growth of AI. And ASI was coined in 2014 or so.
AI -> AGI -> ASI (SI)
I don't think we're at SI yet, I've heard it would soak up entire city's energy or at least block's to run it until we find better energy resource. We're slowly moving towards AGI, SI is the distant future.
