Mod Post Poll Results and New Guidelines for Political Posts

Hey everyone,

As you might have seen, the poll has come to an end, and the results were a bit surprising to me. The winning option was that all political posts moving forward must be flaired by the user with the Political Question post flair, with 125 votes.

Personally, I would have preferred having a second space for political questions, which received 121 votes. However, you may have already noticed that I’ve added two flairs: one for general questions and one for political questions. This means you can filter out political questions by clicking on General Question, and you’ll only see general questions from there.

One thing to keep in mind is that there will be a new way of handling political posts moving forward. As outlined in the new rule, posts that are not appropriately marked as political by the user will first result in a removal & a warning, followed by a temporary ban. Any further occurrences may result in a permanent ban.

I’m aware that this might not be a perfect system, so feel free to leave constructive feedback in the comments. That said, I do want this space to remain welcoming for people who are not interested in politics and would rather not see those posts at all. It can also be difficult to distinguish between political posts made in good faith and those intended to provoke negative discussions.

Lastly, because there is a high volume of posts in the subreddit and I can’t always read every new submission, I’d like to ask you to report any posts or comments that break the rules. You can also send a modmail if you’d like to provide additional details. Please do include links to the profile or content you’re reporting so I can review it and take action more quickly.

Also quick FYI: Please always be respectful toward others. It’s okay to disagree, but attacking people is not.

Thank you, everyone, for contributing to this community!

Political Question What do you think of the botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee?

Failed execution after two lethal injections.

Should her execution be carried out again or should she just get life in prison?

Edit: Tennessee governor has put a halt to executions in the state following the failure.

At this point, is life in prison a better option?

Political Question If the midterms are cancelled due to a National Emergency, would you protest in the streets? What would America do?

I would stop going to work and just protest. That would be the end anyway.

The average gas price on 1/19/25 was $3.10.

Today it is $4.41.

This is very, very basic math.

Political Question Why do many populist conservatives seem to love cruelty?

Whether it comes to forced cruel deportations, racism, war crimes, torture, war in general or their enthusiasm for the death penalty or inhumane prison conditions—they seem to love cruelty. They constantly say the left suffers from ”suicidal empathy”, but I'd say the suicidal/performative cruelty on the right is a worse issue.

I thought of this after seeing the news about the failed execution of Christa Pike who was on death row. Obvious her crimes were horrific, but why am I seeing conservative saying ”bring back hanging” or ”bring back the electric chair”? Why?

The same people love to say they are ”passionate about saving civilization”, but what is civilized about brutal violence and inflicting major harm on people? Whats at all appealing in making a torturous spectacle out of killing someone? Do they just think civilization is pretty buildings and powerful white people and nothing else? Dont they get the same cruelty they condone now can bite them too?

Do they think cruelty is something ”the powerful” can indulge in as a treat? Do they genuinely think the threat of cruelty can mold behavior? Do they just find it entertaining?

if you invent something and sell it to others, should it be more expensive for others since others simply cannot make it (due to patents, etc)?

Political Question For anyone who watched yesterday's Jack Smith hearing live: How do you reconcile what actually happened in the room versus the thirty second clips being pushed in the media today?

1.6k Upvotes

I watched all four hours of the Jack Smith hearing live yesterday. I saw the actual answers and the moments where big accusations fell apart live on camera. Then I logged on today, saw the media coverage, and felt completely gaslit.

In the actual room, we saw claims debunked in real time. But today, the viral clips show senators shouting about disbarment, while the answers that disproved their points were completely edited out.

This feels like textbook gaslighting. They are insisting a totally different story happened right in front of us, relying on the fact that most people don't watch any of it, and most who do only watch the manufactured outrage clips.

Has anyone else experienced this whiplash after watching a live hearing? How do you process being told to disbelieve what you literally saw with your own eyes? This feels 100% Orwellian, and I don't see it from "both sides"

General Question How do states manage to botch executions?

• Upvotes

Apparently Christa Pike survived a double dose of lethal injection. Can someone knowledgeable in this explain how that happens?

In addition to this not that long ago Joe James Nathan took nearly 4 hours and that sounds crazy to me.

While I'm honestly anti death penalty because it seems to be more trouble than it's worth within our legal system and at least a couple people have been wrongfully executed. I'd think you could just get someone trained as a vet to pump the condemned full of like 3x an appropriate amount of general anesthesia drugs and then a massively lethal dose of fentanyl or something to that effect. If we're going to maintain the appearance this is somehow more humane than just pushing them off a tall structure or the firing squad.

My home loan rate is at 7.5%. The amount I pay in dollars for my home loan is leaps and bounds more than what I pay for fuel. Am I the only one?

Political Question Is the Republican "strategy" just "crash the economy to drive military recruitment for wars of choice" ?

At least within my lifetime, it seems every Republican administration has gone out of their way to crash the economy and either start or escalate a war.

General Question Do people really lack common sense when driving?

• Upvotes

This girl thought my car can fit trying to make a turn when the space is less than 3ft and her car was blocking my way. The other side was closed off due to construction. She appeared to be cursing at me in the car or saying something. I opened my window and was like: my car can’t fit so I can’t go anywhere. Then I signaled her with my hands to come towards me to give me and her space so I made a wide turn to make both our lives easier since she looked like she’s a beginner driver backing up like that.

General Question Can a death penalty be given twice?

In the Netherlands we have heard of the failed execution of Christa Pike. (In my country we don’t have the death penalty). If she recovers, can she be executed again? Or will she be imprisoned or be released from prison?

Edit. Thank you for all the answers. I am flabbergasted by the fact this is not a one time occurrence. One of you informed me that she is in the process for the death penalty and imprisonment for 30 years now. That’s a very long time waiting to be executed.
