Forever Beta Feedback Campfires should have a smoke trail to make them easier to spot
I like that you receive a 'Nearby campfire' buff when they are near, but it can still be hard to locate them on the ground. It would be cool if they have a smoke trial going up into the sky 20-40 feet to make them more obvious from a distance.

u/Michaelzee 5d ago
Yes my rogue would love a smoke signal out in the zone for a lovely group sitting down for a 100% critical chance on them. š

This would be such a fun pvp addition having to second guess putting a campfire down or not to avoid drawing enemies

u/Olddirtybelgium 5d ago
Shaman sentry totem would finally have a use. You could keep an eye on the campfire while away.
14
u/Appropriate_Pen4445 5d ago
Having a sentry provided by one of professions would be interesting as well. Like sacrificing one slot for safety in a wild.

u/Masiyo 5d ago
I want this for the reverse sweep lol.
Bait the opposing faction with seemingly one camper only to find they're surrounded by stealthies.
16
u/ThreeMountaineers 5d ago
Or, the historic classic, create many more campfires than you need to make it seem you have the numbers advantage
17

u/Arnhermland 5d ago
Like hell a fucking rogue would run into a group of people like that, all buffed up to boot, lmao.

Something needs to be done to make them easier to spot. As is, I've found myself on more than one occasion wandering in and out of range of the buff without a clue where it's directing me.
This, a campfire minimap icon, an arrow--something.
28
74
u/StoicGigs 5d ago
A campfire icon on the minimap is a cool idea too.
82
u/GlassCannon81 5d ago
Your original idea is better, and very good.
9
u/John_Sequitur22 5d ago
Why not both? Have a nice smoke signal that can be seen from x range and a map toggle like trainers etc in the tracking tab.
Be interesting in pvp areas where you can see camps from a distance
36
u/Mand125 5d ago
Because looking at the world should be emphasized over just going to a quest marker on a map.
-4
u/Koanical 5d ago
It's possible that not everyone's graphics card will pick up the smoke trail...
I do agree that the smoke signal is a better idea and builds a better world--but we've already got the tracker, I don't see anything necessarily bad about a map marker.
8
u/Mand125 5d ago
They had smoke trails twenty years ago. Ā I think the graphics cards can manage.
If they canāt, how did you actually expect to play the rest of the game?
-5
u/Koanical 5d ago
Smoke graphics aren't always great.
At any rate, you don't need to be a jerk about constructive suggestions to better the game.
3
u/Mand125 5d ago
They certainly werenāt great in 2004, yet they existed just fine.
I donāt think seeking to increase immersion rather than navigating by map waypoint is a particularly unreasonable stance to take. Ā You were the one who brought up the alleged performance issue with visual effects to justify your preference, and since it doesnāt hold up to the slightest scrutiny are getting mad at me instead.
1
u/Koanical 5d ago
I'm not saying that it's an unreasonable stance, but I similarly don't think that having a map waypoint is any more immersion breaking than having the minimap in the first place. I'm not mad, I just fail to see how the two can't coexist--especially given that there's an addon in development which will offer those minimap waypoints for those who want them, suggesting that I'm not the only one thinking this way.
4
u/Sonderin 5d ago
would also be nice if the campfire lighting intensity would change based on how long the campfire has left, sucks sitting down for close to a minute and then it fades on you lol
5
u/ClassicBoomer1987 5d ago edited 5d ago
That exact problem is why I built an addon for it, the Campfire Nearby buff has no coordinates and there's no world-object API, so the only fix is players sharing pins with each other. Map + minimap pin with a 15-min countdown. Happy to send you the beta.
Its called Smoke Signals, currently under CurseForge review
This will work once approved: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/smoke-signals-forever/

I saw that post a day or so ago! It's a great idea; if it doesn't get added in, I'm looking forward to grabbing it for launch.

Maybe a super cheap consumable too to make the smoke different colors, bigger, or just more visible at range, too. Really signal where the party is at!

u/Ready-Effect-670 5d ago
This is a super awesome idea!
Absolutely love it!
I want to see the smoke over the trees and from far away :).
9
8
u/ChillFax 5d ago
The smoke should also blow in your characters face no matter which side of the fire you sit on
9
u/SpaciallyCompromised 5d ago
I approve. With in reason. Iām just imaging westfall have 100 different little smoke trails all over the sky.
6
u/StoicGigs 5d ago
Campfires can't be placed within 100 yards of another camp fire already. So it wouldn't "pollute" the landscape.
2
9
6
u/G1oaming 4d ago
Also aliance and horde should have two different colors of smoke two scout each other and attack in wilderness
11

5
u/tb8592 5d ago
Great idea til there is 100 campfires all next to each other
1
u/TheNewl0gic 5d ago
This is some issue that might happen and needs to be addressed , for example you need a min range of distance for each
1
1
u/BadSanna 3d ago
I mean, a community event to drop campfires outside the enemy faction capitol and make it look like Armageddon would hit hard, and be totally keeping in the spirit of Classic lol
13
u/MeltBanana 5d ago edited 5d ago
Cool for pve, but would have too big an impact in pvp and would reduce how often people are willing to put them down.
11
10
u/JeDi_Five 5d ago
This just makes me want flare guns in pvp. Blue for alliance, red for horde. Fun way to let people know you need help.
10
u/MoodayTV 5d ago
Easy fix. Make the campfire right-clickable to "Stoke the Flames for 30 seconds, making a lot of smoke to increase the visibility of the campfire and make it appear on the minimap of other friendly faction players"
No stoke, no smoke.
4
9
u/StoicGigs 5d ago
That's true, but you can see that as an opportunity to ambush the opposite faction, or something to defend. As Horde you would feel like a raiding party attacking an Alliance camp, stealing their buffs.
4
u/tycoon39601 5d ago
They might have to change the fact that attacks against a sitting character are always a guaranteed crit. I can imagine a rogue ambushing you for a huge chunk of your health due to guaranteed crit every time.
2
1
u/sneakpeakspeak 5d ago
I think it would be really nice for pvp. You could ambush people and hunt people. It would create a real kind of tracking thing. I think it could be real nice for world pvp.
1
u/BadSanna 3d ago
Well, it's a video game, not the real world, so it would probably be possible to make the smoke only visible to people of your faction on the PvP realm. Not sure what the in-game explanation for that would be.
Either way, I don't think too many people on the PvP realm are going to be dropping them anywhere other than just outside their faction town, anyway.
0
u/Enchylada 2d ago
Well, not necessarily. Who's to say whether or not the smoke trail is coming from your own faction or not?
3
u/cherryplumpick 5d ago
Good idea! In Mulgore, you can see smoke from the ruined caravan from pretty far away. If they did it like that it'd be so cool!
3
u/Altruistic-Policy743 5d ago
In pvp you should be able to hide the smoke from other faction, based on high appropriate skill level.
4
3
u/Plastic_Code5022 5d ago
Also, I would love when a Tauren reaches max stacks of plainsrunning if it would kick up a trail of dust behind.

You all read my mind, I am currently going through the approval process for my addon called Smoke Signals
This allows you to share the location of campfires with other addon users. You can also add what buffs are available at this campfire.
This will work once approved: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/smoke-signals-forever/
Looking for some beta users if you are interested. Hoping to be up on Curseforge ASAP

u/NoProgram4843 5d ago
Neat idea, increased range already works for some entities like giant world bosses so I think it could be implemented easily.
2
2
u/Jockmeister1666 5d ago
But only have a limited visibility range. I donāt wanna see smoke trails all over the horizon
2
2
u/charge10 5d ago
Yeah, maybe make an engineering or blacksmith item for fun that lets you change the color of the smoke?
2
2
u/Adept-Grapefruit-214 5d ago
I havent been looking around for it, but Iām kind of amazed they didnāt add this with the weather effects.
You can kinda triangulate a campfire by the buff, but that requires being within 100m of it in the first place
2
u/NoohjXLVII 5d ago
Can cross faction share campfires?
2
u/EvilHeart01 5d ago
yeah, no matter who put the campfire and the items on it, u just gotta sit close to it to get the buffs
1
1
u/pbrook12 3d ago
This has not been my experience. I havenāt been able to get any buffs or the timer countdown from campsites set up by the other factionĀ
1
u/EvilHeart01 3d ago
unsure if this works in pvp ruleset but am sure it did when i sit next to an alliance campfire infront of dead mines in pve ruleset
2
2
u/OkCalligrapher9679 5d ago
and normalize camp feature sizes - of you don't have a tent your camp is barely visible
2
2
u/rbtgoodson 5d ago
I like the suggestion, but there should be a way to hide it in PvP territory, too.
4
u/Icecreamtruc 5d ago
Actually no, it makes perfect sense the enemy can see the smoke and know where you are too!

People will certainly create addons to share maps locations between players.

Already on it! Smoke Signals, in CurseForge review now. Post your fire once, everyone in the zone with the addon sees the pin + which buffs are at it. Same faction only, opt-in, so none of the PvP griefing people are worried about below.
This will work once approved: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/smoke-signals-forever/

Wolverine fart clouds just happened. I'm not saying this is an outright terrible idea but this is the kind of positive idea that contributes to a pile of good ideas that ultimately clutter and detract from the game.
I think a better solution is to just interact with the system as intended and chat. Asking in the zone if any campfires are going might even result in positive interactions.
1
u/shrimpxz 5d ago
Great idea, makes you also spot opposite faction campfires from far away so you could just visit them, peacefully... or not .

Could someone explain what are campfires for?

1
u/BadSanna 3d ago
It's like the cooking fire you could always do, but every profession gets something they can put at one that give a buff that is like 80% of a class buff. Like fishing gets a Fish Bowl that gives 8% to all stats and doesn't stack with Kings.
It's to help classes that are balanced around raid when they are out in the world on their own and don't have someone to give them the buff they need to feel right.
Right now we can only put 3 items down, but at higher levels you unlock Tier 2 and 3 campfires that let you do 5 and 10 items. Each person can only put down one item and they don't stack.
So if you are out in the world and plop down a campfire with your 2% crit buff that doesn't stack with Boomkin crit, then other people see that and come and put down their stuff, you can get NEARLY full raid buffed even if the only people around are not the classes you would otherwise need.

Would also be cool if they were a local VOIP hub (that you can disable in options) so crafters and slow typers can chat more
1
u/imisstheyoop 5d ago
Depends entirely on how hot the fire is and how dry, or seasoned, the wood being burned is.
I assume that the wood being used is very dry and <20% moisture level, possibly even <15% so it would produce very little if any visible smoke with a hot fire.
All of that said, I don't think that adding smoke is the correct solution here. They should just be selectable on the tracking via mini-map.

u/Dr-Enforcicle 4d ago
I mean it's pretty easy to see a bunch of players sitting around a campfire and bunch of objects. You only get the "nearby" buff if you're within ~100yd of it.

u/myrealityde 4d ago
Having some sort of audio coming from the campfire would be nice too. Similar to a tavern, you hear people chatting, music playing etc. so you just have to follow the sound.

They should also create a rare elite bear named Smokey LaBear that spawns randomly at any random campfire in Kalimdor. 5 mins after spawn, if heās not dead yet, heād attack the nearest campfire and destroy it. If still not killed, heād wander on to the next nearest campfire and so on. Heād have an enticing loot table to encourage grouping to 1) prevent the campfire destruction and 2) feast on the loot. š»
