Forever Beta Feedback A tiny little item has made my immersion jump like 300%
With the way my contrast and gamma is set, the world can get VERY dark and having to use a torch has been so damn fun. Just makes me feel like I'm an actual adventure

u/The-Iron-knight 3d ago
What is that and how does one get one?
114
u/Kernoriordan 3d ago
You can get this one from near Jitters in Duskwood. Near the big graveyard area. There’s a dead guard on the floor you get it off - it’s got a quest marker
35
u/rhaesdaenys 3d ago
The guard isn't always in the same spot. I've found him down the road leading to STV.
11
u/internet_underlord 3d ago
Someone else posted earlier about finding the guard on road into the big portal area in the center of duskwood.

u/Desperate-Painter152 3d ago
They added a torch? Or was it always there? I don't remember

u/Jperry12 3d ago
There has always been torches/lanterns but theyre not very common and kinda useless.
They're held in offhand items for casters, earliest one i know of on alliance side is from the ghost quests at the westfall lighthouse

u/ACoolGuy-Promise 3d ago
Just off the road to STV from Duskwood is a dead guard who has it on him. Looks like a quest.

I've been playing WoW off and on for 20 years and I don't actually know if there always was a torch 😅

u/ResQ_ 3d ago
There have been torch-looking items but they never had this much of a glow effect. So they were kinda useless for the purpose of an actual torch.
1
u/MuenCheese 3d ago
I saw someone with the blue lantern offhand glowing in the courtyard of undercity and it looked amazing

u/Dukenstein12 3d ago
For those who want it you can find it off a randomly spawning nightwatch guard. He spawns in one of three spots. Road to the dream grove. Road near STV and in Raven Hill.
5
u/MrMacduggan 3d ago
You can also get a torch from a quest for a ghost pirate at the Westfall lighthouse.

I wish there was a nighttime darkness slider ngl. I want it dark DARK. Like nearly almost pitch black dark that I could really see torches from other players light up in the distance, and bonfires, or lamp posts
16
u/DIMEBAGLoL 3d ago
Turn your gamma in game to .8 and your contrast to 80+
6
u/iamthewhatt 3d ago
Should be a toggle for those settings... because as soon as dawn approaches, your eyes will bleed lol
1
u/DIMEBAGLoL 2d ago
I have a 1000nit oled monitor so I’m very used to the extreme brightness lol blow my shit up 💀

u/GeorgeMcCrate 3d ago
The darkness is actually one of the features I'm looking forward to the most (not playing the beta). I've always wanted the nights in WoW to be way darker. I just wish the game would get adjusted to it. There should be more light sources on the map, more NPCs should carry torches at night and I would love to have an equipment slot reserved just for lanterns so they don't take up your offhand slot. And the draw distance of players and NPCs would have to be increased or at least that of their lights.
1
u/The-Iron-knight 2d ago
You're going to love the last area in the Skyborne island, then. It's darker and creepier than Darkshire.
4
u/BallbusterSicko 3d ago
Some places should just be dark for everyone to make it fair
1
u/Echo_Origami 1d ago
There should be a cave where you can't see shit but only if you have torches then you can proceed further inside.
This is old school RPG material. I love that you can see something you can't access yet early on the game untl you find the correct key or runes or whatever.
I want WoW to have more of these puzzles scattered about the land. Puzzles that actually take skills to unlock, or skills to find clues to unlock it instead of always running off to WoWhead to figure it all out.
A lot of treasures respawns in the same location. In MoP, you can always find the same weaspon in the exact same location on different toons. It would be better if it was randomly generated.
2
u/effervescentEscapade 3d ago
Me too! But then I’m playing on a PvP server and some Undead rogue called xxstabyouxx is gonna gank me relentlessly because he has his gamma set to surface of the sun, ha!
6
u/Defiant_Coat_2491 3d ago
You won't see them coming anyway because of stealth? Do you have nameplates turned on? Pretty sure the character names and nameplates would stick out pretty brightly in the dark
1
u/Pwnstar6 3d ago
Yeah thats the problem it would be much cooler to have it really dark and not bypass that for pvp...
1
2
u/chaplar 3d ago
Have you checked out Monsters and Memories?
2
u/Defiant_Coat_2491 3d ago
Yep I've seen a YouTube video about it before, I'm actually gonna try it out on the early access
1
1
u/temporal_gasteropod 3d ago
You want it darker?
1
u/Defiant_Coat_2491 3d ago
Yep just like when Inky Black Potion came out back in Legion when I still played retail WoW but slightly even darker just by a bit, I used to always use that potion whenever it was nighttime and it looked amazing

u/bagel-bites 2d ago
I mentioned this in another thread, but I want torches to be crafted with a stick and linen cloth, and lit at campfires, braziers, and a 1hr CD using flint.
Make it last 15 minutes, with an increase to 30 minutes based on a new Survival Profession, and then make it dark as hell in the world at night, or in certain areas like some caves. Being in the dark could also obscure your maps and coordinates.
12
u/Capn98 3d ago
Last night was in a guild raid on Duskwood, and the vibes were insane, a bunch of orcs sneaking through the human woods in the dark with heavy rain and just a few torches lighting the way
1
u/Danfossie 3d ago
I do wonder how this will work with the world being time synced. People who can only play in the evenings will always be in a dark world.

For ppl looking for the torch::I remember a post stating that on the way to the green dragon portal central duskwood there is a dead guard on the ground somewhere. Guess you can loot him for the torch.
7
u/TheMad_fox 3d ago
The spawn point is random it is also possible to be near jitters or the road leading to STVietnam
7
u/askthedonkey 3d ago
In our group of 4 the healer has decided that any time he pulls out the torch its mana break time. It fucking works as a signal with out saying words or typing.
5
u/Nosphelem 3d ago
Man I’m so happy they finaly added it to the game. They cooked so well !
1
u/Different-Context-84 2d ago
Multi billion dollar company adds useable torch after 20 years. They cooked so hard.
4
u/xRAEBELx 3d ago
Wait, where did you get the torch?!
4
u/Kernoriordan 3d ago
You can get this one from near Jitters in Duskwood. Near the big graveyard area. There’s a dead guard on the floor you get it off - it’s got a quest marker

Lighthouse quest in Westfall.
8
u/ProfessorMiserable76 3d ago
No there's a dead night watch guard in dusk wood that gives this toy

u/testwiese420 3d ago
Why the downvotes? How is the Westfall one different to this?
Maybe we can even use Grayson's Torch + this one.

Time to start adding +light radius on items
(This is a PoE joke before I get down votes)
3
u/StrangeTeaching2861 3d ago
Mmm, this feels like the darkness system in Dark and Darker...this is going to improve immersion a lot!
2
u/Tautsu 3d ago
Where do you get a torch? Mentioned it in the reveal and couldn’t find one, even on normal settings night gets dark
2
u/Kernoriordan 3d ago

What about for horde?
3
u/MrMacduggan 3d ago
There's one available from a quest at the Westfall lighthouse. (Horde-friendly!)
1
u/Saczuanello 3d ago
I believe there is an NPC in duskwood that can give you a torch and it lasts 5 minutes. But I can be wrong.

Honestly, experiencing Duskwood will be 1000% better now. I've even used it at night in other zones and it is amazing.
1
u/According_Zone_8262 3d ago
Takes me back to the good old tibia days where having a torch was necessary in caves otherwise you literally couldnt see anything
1
u/pedrooky 3d ago
I'm really having to fight hard the urge to start playing again. This all looks so good.
1
u/Jolly-Refuse2232 3d ago
Do you actually have to use torches to be able to see where you're going now?
3
u/Imprettystrong 3d ago
I was in echo isles in durotar last night and under the thick canopy of trees in some area was very dark, a torch would have been cool af. They need to add a torch to horde early game asap
1
u/effervescentEscapade 3d ago
Hopefully an add-on will be made to adjust gamma settings automatically depending on a preset and the time of day.
1
u/SteamingSkad 3d ago
Unless it was purely coincidence, I believe the quest Merrick’s Bow is related to the torch. See my comment on the page: https://www.wowhead.com/forever/quest=96138/merricks-bow#comments:id=6436338
1
u/MukBoBuk 3d ago
Always loved this look. There is already a torch wand in the game too that gives off a really small to low radius affect around the character. I used to keep it in my bags just for immersive moments I could bring it out in the dark.
1
u/Ok-Internet9433 3d ago
So how you tweaked the settings? What values are u using for gamma or contrast?

remember when they tried to bait us into thinking the next thing to come was some survival duskwood survival game mode or something, I guess they meant this

u/Beneficial_Bit8296 3d ago
Does WoWf support hdr?

u/Pabes-Best 2d ago
yes kinda, there are console commands to turn it on, there is also a mod that gives a UI for adjustment

They could do it like Twilight Princess where you can either place it on your belt buckle to provide hands free light while you travel and fight. Or, you can hold it in your offhand to provide more directional light.
1
u/ZeroWashu 3d ago
Meanwhile in parts of the Night Elf starting area I am nearly blinded by the luminescence

u/EffectiveSwimming136 3d ago
The quest from Westfall Light House has a torch offhand item, it emits a glow just like this torch.

Man I can't wait to experience the new duskwood. Trying to stay horde in the beta so I can save some surprises but it's so hard.

Actually a very cool addition, wonder if you can use it in Kara Crypts?
•
u/FeedbackKey2443 3h ago
This reminds me when I added some skyrim mods to add darker nights and weather effects like getting hypothermia from cold. It was fun and made torches useful. The same goes for kettles, pots, tents, arrows, etc.

Mind to be careful with that torch..! You don't wanna set any tree on fire..🔥 by accident ofc.. 🤔
0
u/seanc1986 3d ago
You can dual-wield torches If you get https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item%3D9386/excavators-brand?utm_source=chatgpt.com . It goes in the main-hand as opposed to all the other torches with are off-hand only.

u/Turrican64 3d ago
But still no other light effects on a player ilummunates the environment. That's one thing that annoys me the most.

u/ProphAussie 3d ago
No flying has done that too — despite all the screeching entitled Karens raging about it, lol
4
u/Pussytrees 3d ago
I haven’t seen a single person complain about no flying where did this even come from lmao.
1
u/ProphAussie 1d ago
The WoW forums ... There's literally been heaps. lol
I'd wager it's mostly the retail-supremacist players, but they're definitely there.
Just gotta open your eyes. Lmao3

They should honestly just make them an early craftable in cooking profession next to campfires.
