Context?
1
u/bugbearmagic 4h ago
Look up Alec Holowka. And keep in mind that he was a genius artist and gamedev from the golden age of indie devs well ahead of his time. He unfortunately was surrounded by parasites of the industry that villainized his depression against him to frame themselves as victims of his personal depression.
I remember at least one was essentially saying he verbally abused them by saying he wanted to take his own life - basically whining that he was a downer. Honestly pretty disturbing stuff that just shows he was surrounded by people that lacked the ability to properly identify the dangers before it was too late. Sure didn’t help he had a relationship with Quinn, who invented a business model around claiming to be the victim of abuse, often with no evidence.

u/KaminaTheManly 2h ago
There is a lot of context missing but to not try and get him help and instead blame him like that is pretty wild. I wonder if they feel responsible for his death.

PSA: Please do not eat the sidewalk plants, a lot of them are likely to absorb noxious chemicals and heavy metals as they grow.
Urban gardening is badass, but it's also a good way to get lead in your brain without being on the business side of a gun.

I ate so many lead paint chips. Superpowers should be kicking in any day now. Everything just hurts, but I'm assuming that's the powers entering my body.

Specifically the plants next to roads are especially bad due to proximity to car exhaust. You can have an urban garden with plots if it's a reasonable distance away from traffic and started with fresh soil.

Certain saprobic (dead-plant-eating) mushrooms are known to break down toxic hydrocarbons like motor oil and gasoline. They also concentrate heavy metals in their fruiting bodies, which can be collected and sent to heavy metal recycling facilities. Pleurotus ostreatus is probably the most aggressive and omnivorous commercially-available species.
Mix liquid or grain spawn into a load of moistened hardwood wood chips (get them for free from Chip Drop) or sawdust fuel pellets. Also mix in a few pounds of alfalfa pellets. If you want to do math, the water should be 60% of the final weight and the alfalfa pellets should be 10-15% of the dry weight.
Put the chunky mushroom grits in a barrel or sturdy trash can just before the temperature drops below 50 for the winter. Make sure there's at least a little air flow. Allow it to ferment over winter - P. ostreatus will grow slowly in cold weather but contaminating organisms will struggle. When the ground is warm enough to work, mix the barrel of wood chip spawn into the ground. Let it go for a year. Tada, you have done a DIY soil remediation. Do soil tests before and after treatment if you'd like to know how well you did.

Is eating plants on the sidewalk something commonly considered?
33
u/wolfgang784 20h ago
There was a semi-viral video guide not super long ago about plantin kale or spinach or somethin like that in all the sidewalk cracks in your neighborhood and harvesting it repeatedly to eat. I think they also may have done onions.
Either way, they were eatin a significant amount of sidewalk vegetables and grindin them for spices and stuff and people in the comments places were up in arms about the toxicity the plants prolly had.
Ive got no idea if anyone else took that persons advice to plant sidewalk vegetables or not though but I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of hipsters have done so.

u/Lobster_LeninN329 20h ago
Sometimes I forget how dumb people are
14
u/PixelatedGiant 19h ago
He could've also been lying to his viewers and eating perfectly fine vegetables not from the sidewalk. The people who suffer usually aren't the grifters, they are obviously in on it. It's the ignorant people that follow.
9
u/CandidLeg3910 21h ago
That's why I plant native wildflowers instead. You don't wanna eat most of them. MOST of them.
17
u/masterjon_3 21h ago
Don't listen to this guy. I ate sidewalk plants and now I have super strength. It doesn't come with super durability, so my ankles snapped when I tried lifting a truck, but the super strength is still pretty cool
9
u/Gonokhakus 21h ago
Fair enough. The pain of your bones breaking is just their weakness leaving your body.
6
u/Improving_Myself_ 20h ago
Similarly: mushrooms have a tendency to absorb heavy metals.
Lead is used so often as an additive to cinnamon for weight and color that you're probably better off not eating cinnamon at all. Cinnamon gets recalled for lead a LOT.

I briefly worked with an urban garden that determined they needed a several feet thick layer of clean soil on top of the polluted ground to provide safe vegetables, this was fine for them since the garden was part of a food waste collection -> composting company but isn't practical for most people.
2
u/Leonie-Lionheard 15h ago
Isn't the main part burned fuel gas and tire dust? Where does the lead come from?
3
u/Chemical_Building612 14h ago
Areas adjacent to roads that were in place during peak leaded gasoline era still have significant lead accumulation in the root levels of the soil.
1
u/Leonie-Lionheard 13h ago
That was 30 years ago. I doubt that after renewal is streets and sidewalks there is so much left. But it would be interesting to know how long such things stay.
2
u/FlashyAdvice1646 11h ago
They only banned that shit after after abnormal levels of lead were found at the bottom of the ocean. the poisoned dirt underneath the concrete was never removed.
1
u/Leonie-Lionheard 8h ago
I dunno. In my country (DE) they exchange a lot of soil under roads if they renew them.

u/scorpiologist 15h ago

Fair warning, don't plant bamboo. It's highly invasive, will spread to and break surrounding foundations and is fucking difficult to fully remove

To the comments: It’s not AI for those who are wondering just a cool artist.
if you look at the second stripes on the kid’s sleeves in panel 2, you can see the ends of a few digital brush strokes, and if you zoom in, on the left arm in that same panel, there’s a couple very small spots that they didn’t colour in.
To the artist: This is a very cool art style! I’m a big fan of very boxy and angular character design, and I love the look of your line work. I’m assuming you’ve been drawing with a round brush and erasing the edges to give it a more jagged look? Very cool.
Good comic.

u/kajo404 6h ago
whoa, yes, i do use the eraser to get these edges!!
the first layer is always a physical pencil sketch i just took a photo of,
then i try to make the lineart look like a linocut (i love linocut!!).
i am used to drawing on paper and obviously need a lot of practice with digital coloring. some ppl really seem to have a problem with the yellow tint in this one??
anyway, i'm experimenting and learning with each comic, i'm getting closer to finding my style, and so far, it's a lot of fun and keeps me entertained at work haha2

Omfg I love this.
My small front yard had been transformed, by me, to be a native plant habitat. It's full of bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, mosquitoes, spiders, toads, beetles... You name it- every critter is welcome. Same in the back but the lawn is huge. But we keep the leaves and have fireflies. Birds everywhere too!
I highly recommend it. Fuck HOA's and Fuck mosquitoe Joe specifically.

Genuinely think that'd be hilarious, edit because I read it again and it sounded sarcastic 😅

The yellow tint, the composition, and some suspicious line-work makes this look quite like AI. Please don't be AI.
