They’re “happy” because their lives depend on it

Besides the fake happiness and generally all of it, what really creeps me out about it is how overly innocent and childish the brand of happiness is. Very off-putting.

What’s important to remember is that Kim absolutely knows it’s fake. Control is the point. The bigger and faker it is, the more control and fear he knows he has.

Man, I never considered it like that, but the thought is seriously haunting.

•

u/qwertykitty 8h ago

I wonder if he does know it's fake. His father certainly did but he was probably raised seeing it everywhere his whole life. Has he ever experienced his people without that fake happiness? How would he know it isn't genuine without experience? No one thinks themselves to be the villain.

Kim jong Un studied abroad in Europe as a young child under an alias.

He definitely knows what the outside world is like. There are people in Europe who were shocked that their classmate turned out to be the heir to North Korea when his father brought him home and name *him heir apparent.

So Un knows it's fake. This is about ensuring he has complete control over the population.

Imagine going to school. And then eventually finding out who your roommate you used to get drunk with was.

•

u/DefiniteDefaultUser 1h ago

Same with Bashar Al Assad. Used to be an eye doctor in the UK. Imagine having been medically examined by a dictator lol

•

u/FixFun1959 7h ago

He 100% does.

He doesn’t give a shit about their actual happiness. The only realism he gets or needs is from the generals and advisors closest to him that know the whole game and how to play it.

they literally train to be the leader, its no coincidence they act so similar.

•

You’re absolutely right, there’s a whole strategy. The generals and apparatchiks have been there since his father was in power, and they’ve got the propaganda planned a year in advance.

He’s even trying to emulate his grandfather, there’s a concentrated push for it. Even the North Koreans are gravitating towards nostalgia. Remind everyone of the “good times” (which were terrible, but of course history is rewritten).

They’ve got Un doing the same dog and pony touring the country’s farms and factories, and offering “on the spot practical advice” for ways they can grow/harvest more food or produce items quicker/better. Even though they obviously have no idea what they are talking about.

•

u/Snitsie 4h ago

Are the farmers allowed to ignore that practical advice?

•

u/DarknessIsFleeting 7h ago

He lived in Switzerland for several years, so yes he knows.

•

u/SixStringsUsh 7h ago

sounds like the plot of a dark truman show, with nukes and executions.

•

u/eightdx 7h ago

He really aimed high here with, uhh, high school volleyball?

This seems more like he did it for the love of the (authoritarian) game

•

u/Domski77 4h ago

Interesting theory. How does it explain this?

•

u/hypo-osmotic 3h ago

His own exaggerated smile is probably fake, too. Both for the sake of the media and a signal to everyone in the room that no one is on the chopping block today

If this regime ever ends and North Koreans become like… regular people… they’re going to have so much multi-generational trauma to work through as an entire culture. Like… sooo much.

•

u/Downvoted_Defender 10h ago

They can't at this point - some will always gravitate towards the next one

•

u/ryanraze 5h ago

Yep, it's like that Netflix documentary, "Trust Me: The False Prophet." Those people had a chance to get out too, but followed the next.

its like the kind of over exuberation you would put on to entertain a dog or a baby

•

u/Due-Mycologist-1154 10h ago

Which is essentially what they're doing except that baby could execute them

"It's a good life!"

The fat one?

•

u/johnnyhammerstixx 7h ago

Or the President of the United States?

Oh, right. He L O V E S this guy and all this bullshit.

………. Could it be a form of silent protest?

I hate the color scheme I often see in North Korean videos like this. It’s giving squid game, *”you’ll play along and be happy god dammit why aren’t you enjoying yourself?! Enjoy yourself or else!”*

•

u/totally_not_a_zombie 11h ago

It's the color scheme of 90s video

•

u/Aggressive_Body834 36m ago

Because the 90s was the worst time in NK. The famine that started after any support from the Soviets had collapsed was brutal.

Yeah the jumping up and down while clapping over your head is super weird

Wait. Is this picture supposed to look creepy almost like Chucky when you don’t look directly at it?

u/seiscaneco 16h ago

All sofisticated or sarcastic personalities ended in the camps long ago

•

u/ComradeGibbon 8h ago

I went on a business trip to Taiwan. Down in the engineering test lab I noticed a dart board with a print of some guys face stapled to it. When I asked about it they looked sheepish and said the guy was the company CEO.

I think, well this country is alright.

•

u/cantthinkofone29 7h ago

And now it's time for the dystopian anime dance party!

•

u/The_Kadeshi 2h ago

The crazy thing to me is Kim Jong Un went to school in Switzerland. Like from 1992 to 2000. He liked video games and basketball, Jackie Chan movies and doodling. I cannot believe this type of ordinary westernized childhood blinded him entirely to the evils he now perpetuates. Every day he wakes up and just chooses to keep everything in his entire country the same. I can’t get into that headspace, it’s astounding

For a lot of them, the ones taht believein this system, it's really a great honor and they are really that happy.

He is more a less a "demi-god" for them.

If you are in your live, brainwashed that the leader is a family descended from gods wouldn't you be happy to be in his presence?

And nobody wo isn't believing in him is ever present at things like this. Except the sportlers.

•

u/SirRengeti 11h ago

He should be off pudding.

•

u/transitfreedom 9h ago

Does it really look fake? Take another look and who says this.
