This is exactly what I thought.. he made himself the star of his own Truman show but with everyone else having a gun to their heads!

Not to defend the guy, but HE didn’t make himself into this. He was born into the role and groomed into it from infancy. Not to mention that things are so extreme and this culture is so deeply ingrained in the way the government operates there that the slightest change in the way the dictatorship is run, including the leader worship, could risk the family dynasty falling apart and the end of their “beloved” country. Of course, WE would find this a good thing, but they naturally don’t see it that way, and the failure of the regime would genuinely lead to a time of immense struggle among the already-suffering citizens as the government fights to maintain its grasp.

Basically, even if he had a change of heart and wanted to give REAL democracy a try, his handlers would probably immediately exterminate him and bring in the next Great Leader to avoid the all-out chaos that progress would bring to this fragile and unsustainable system. They’re only delaying the inevitable, though.
