Mod Post Please use the "Media" flair option for name requests!

Hey jumper friends! We've seen a large uptick in volume of posts asking for name suggestions, most of them having the "Advice" flair. Even though it is a request for advice of sorts, name requests don't need the same disclaimers as comments on care/husbandry and we would like to encourage everyone to use simply the "Media" flair on those types of posts. (This will also prevent the automod filter from flagging comments without disclaimer tags as that is only a feature of the "Advice" threads) <3

Full disclaimer, any rumours of a relationship remain solely as heresay. The truth is that while they may or may not be in a relationship, I definitely caught violet (who is a Simaethula aurata getting jiggy with another Simaethula violacea, who looked identical to this simaethula violacea. The only thing is that it happened a month ago, and the pictures and videos thst i have of the encounter SUCK, because i didnt have my lens, so its basically unwatchable, and the pics are not much better.

Anyway didnt mean to gossip sorry, please enjoy this footage of a wild Simaethula violacea aka the elegant white moustached simaethula, as it explores my backyard.

They’ve been super active lately and we’re circling their smaller enclosure non stop so I decided to open their enclosure inside of another large but empty one and put a bit of wood in with a lot of hiding spaces. They love it in there and seem to enjoy looking out the window too. Such a tiny baby but I’m already thinking about sizing up to meet this little one’s activity levels

hi there. just wanted to share crumb's story so that she can hopefully make even more people smile, even after she passed <3

i've always been a bug person. for the past 13 years i've been a beekeeper, i've raised all kinds of butterflies, and i have 6 tarantulas. i got my first at the end of may this year, and my collection of fuzzy friends has just continued to grow.

i live in northwest new jersey and have a nice 3 acre property covered in trees and nature, so when i found a mature female golden jumping spider, i was very happy and excited. i'd always check on the spiders at petco when i went to get crickets and saw hoe the jumpers were $35 or more, so me being me, i kept this spider for free. my dad made her an acrylic enclosure and i made a little wood jungle gym for her, got her food, and made a hide in the corner of her home. she adjusted quickly and just wandered around the top of her enclosure most days, then started webbing her hammock up really thick. i thought she was just molting, so i misted and made sure that if she did leave, i'd feed her.

she was in her hammock for about 2 and a half months. i didn't bother her at all, but i used a flashlight to check on her every once and a while. i saw that she would slightly move or react, and that was good enough for me.

yesterday, i was just.. worried. i dont know what it was, but i really just had to check on her.

i know this wasn't a great move, but i went and tried to encourage her out of her hammock. she finally came out after a lot of gentle encouragement, and she was emaciated. i was so scared for her.

i gave her a q-tip with sugar water the second i got hold of her. she seemed to be happy though lethargic, and something i noticed was that she didnt even move her back 4 legs to hold the q-tip, they just stayed straight out. i thought she was just being super enthusiastic to get some sugar. she never(to my knowledge) latched on with her fangs, so i got a little worried. really worried. she stopped responding, but she still seemed to have internal sluid pressure, so i looked it up and the first and foremost thing was that she was probably in shock. i left her in a container with a slightly damp paper towe, and left her in a dark and quiet place, checking on her 2 hours later.

after some research and some pleading with her, i determined she passed. the humidity i kept her in just kept her limbs easily bendable and she had passed when she stopped showing any interest in the sugar water.

i was very sad, but i put all my attention on her babies. there were about 10 slings and i moved them into a small container with a big hide for them. i'm going to get flightless fruit flies for them today and keep close eyes on them.

i love you crumb. you were such a good mamma, i'm so sorry i couldn't save you. i promise i'll take good care of your babies.

i preserved her in a small bottle of alcohol, but now her home remains empty. i wasn't super close with her, but i really loved her.

i hope these blurry pictures of her make at least someone smile :) (last pic is her tiny babies that my camera cant even focus on)

Advice Thoughts on taking in my girl Peridot for the cold season?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is Peridot, the beautiful jumping spider who’s been protecting one of my greenhouses this summer. I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with her a few times when I’ve seen her out and about. She’s always very curious about me and crawls and hops around on my hands/arms/shirt. She seems playful, she’ll jump off my hands but then hop back in, or jump off with a drop line and dangle until I hold my hand out for her. I adore her.

Anyway, obviously the cold season is coming and since today’s likely one of the few chances I’ll see her before it gets really cold, I was thinking about taking her in and getting an enclosure together for her. However, at the same time she’s also obviously been doing well for herself. I actually only noticed her today cause she was hanging off my dying tomato plant monching on a snack she caught next to the hornworm that was victimized by a wasp and I found the sight brutally hilarious.

Anywho. I’m fully prepared to set her up with everything she needs. I have her in a temporary enclosure at the moment while I get some feedback and consider things and finish my yardwork (because if I leave her I probably won’t find her again lol) but I’ll put her back in her area if I decide against keeping her. But just looking for input on what might be best for her. On the one hand, there will be less food available soon and whatnot as it’s getting colder, on the other I am always torn on intervening with nature and taking in wild creatures. I would be sad to not see her pretty face again though.

So long story short, I’d love to hear what some of y’all think on what I should do. Thanks in advance!

Update: so I went to the pet store to get an enclosure and some food for my lil friend, who evidently is a lil man and not a lil lady like I thought all this time lol. While I was there, I saw another jumper for sale who was not in great condition and long story short (you can read the long version here if you’re interested lol) somehow I went from having one jumper in the garden I saw from time to time to having 2 jumpers living with me. Which I guess makes sense with how similar cats and spiders are. I guess if there’s a cat distribution system, there’s gotta be a spider distribution system too lol

Anyway, I’m gonna start to build out his enclosure better but for the time being it’ll do, I’ll post some pics in the comments. Thanks all for your input!

Hello! I’m not currently a jumping spider owner but I’ve been researching and would like to be someday. In the meantime I love when I find one in my house lol. This is my current little resident and it is so cute and sweet. It likes to walk around on me and seems so curious. I was just wondering if you can tell me if it’s a boy or girl? thanks!

Media Happy 1st birthday to Phantom!

This is Phantom. Today is his first birthday! His journey up to this point has been miraculous and deserves to be shared. We (father/daughter team) adopted him in April. He was an i6 at the time. A couple weeks after adoption, he had a mismolt that resulted in his helmet being stuck on his head and twisted in a way that covered all his eyes. He was hidden in a thick hammock for a couple days after molting. We had no idea he was in trouble until we found him the next morning on one side of the enclosure looking extremely dehydrated and frail. He readily accepted some water from a Q tip and we moved him into an ICU container. It seemed that his old helmet had hardened. With his frail state, his loss of vision, and the stress of a catastrophic molt, we knew his chances were slim. We refused to give up on him. We offered him water daily and tried our best to get him to eat. We tried squishing a mealworm and holding it close to him so he could taste it and hopefully latch on. But all efforts to feed him failed. To try something new, we offered him some watermelon. He gingerly moved close to it and proceeded to take a very satisfying and long drink of watermelon juice! He was at least hanging on and even began to explore his ICU container and made a hammock. One morning, approximately one week later, we realized there was something different about him. His helmet was off! There was a residual piece left, but it didn’t impair his eyes. We continued to offer food but the sight of mini mealworms and even fruit flies terrified him. There were days where he was active and a few where he was very playful and wanted to be held. We eventually moved him back into his old enclosure. He survived on a diet of water and watermelon for three months! One day in mid July, after trying for what seemed like the hundredth time, he finally took a mealworm! Over the next month, he took a few more and looked like he was starting to grow. He began making a very thick hammock. In mid August, he molted again. He had another bad molt. This time, a pretty large piece was stuck to his front leg and he lost a pedipalp on the opposite side. We tried to take his enclosure in a steady room, as he was desperately trying to scratch at the old exoskeleton, but it was stuck. Thankfully he had full use of the other seven legs. After dragging his limp leg around for a few days and getting it caught in the silk he leaves everywhere, he self-amputated. We actually saw him do it. Looks like he deliberately got his leg stuck in a piece of silk so he could lean the other way with all his might until the limb dislocated. He looked relieved to be rid of it and proceeded to do his favorite thing in the world, groom himself. Phantom is still a very picky eater but does take mealworms on occasion. He still loves watermelon. Sometimes he likes to be held. And sometimes he likes to be left alone. He has a sweet personality! He has made four hammocks in his enclosure and uses them all. The last of these hammocks was made today. A birthday present to himself! Happy birthday to this resilient, remarkable, and sweet little guy!

I just adopted this male regal spider. But one of his front legs is huge and the other one doesn’t match. Any idea what’s going on here or why? I’m still fairly needed to jumping spiders so I just thought it was odd..

DIY House Flies Yay!

I got a successful Josh's Frogs Amazon order of house fly pupae after a few unsuccessful attempts and I hope this diy setup helps them thrive and procreate! I realize most/many keep the pupae chilled then pull when close to ready for feeding but I needed proof of life even though they looked okay.

Has anyone else done a setup to try to breed their house fly order? If so please share in the comments! Any feeder setup really. I am curious about the parts we show less for valid reasons.

There's an upcyled kids medicine cup with a tablespoon of strawberry jam in it fixed to the side with some adhesive magnets. Im going to make some ventilation around the top with a push pin.

He looked really hungry so I grabbed my little cup here I set by my chair and gave him some fruit flies. Within a few seconds he was already eating. I’ll let him out later today or tomorrow when he gets a full belly. I see these guys all over my yard and porch.

I found this spider in my car (Denver, CO) about a month ago and decided to give him a home with me. He has molted once while in my care and seems to be doing well moving between all three of the web hammocks he has made. I haven't been able to ID him yet, any ideas?

Sorry for blurry photos!! The spood is tiny and moves too much for me to get anything better lol

Advice What should I do

So to start i have a lot of wild jumpers living in my home. I just let them be as they probably hitchhiked from my house plants that I had outdoors when the weather was nice. They also are great for fungus gnat control lol. But this morning I noticed this happening. I dont know a whole lot about jumping spider behaviors and signs of stress. The jumping spider in my enclosure is technically my second (the first one I had was a wild caught that I let go after about 2 weeks of having her. Learned my lesson there). So im still new to jumping spiders. But to me this seems like if they didnt have a barrier then one or both would end up dead. Right after I took this video I used a paint brush to relocate the wild one to a spot ive seen them at a few nights before which is about 8 feet away. So my concern is that this may keep happening. Should I be concerned about this sort of interaction stressing out my spider? Should I relocate the wild jumpers i find to outside? Sorry if this whole paragraph seems hard to read ive had a lot of brain fog lately and lose track of my thought processes very quickly

Any help is appreciated thanks!

my baby joltik just finished her first molt with me, the entire process was probably about 2-3 weeks in hiding and today she finally ventured out of her hammock and became her usual curious self! one question tho, is it normal for her to be this skinny? i offered her plenty of food as soon as i saw her and she's currently carrying around two flies in her mouth LOL
