man imagine how awkward it would have been for BI and Gradey to come back to the Raptors.

that would be soul killing, Dalton Knecht style, never the same again

835

u/cleo22270 Heat 17d ago

At least it would have been for Kawhi.

I know players have big egos, but at some point, they have to realize that anyone’s on the table for a superstar.

u/MahomesMccaffrey Slovenia 16d ago

I remember when the mavs tried to trade for kobe in 07 and the lakers asked for Dirk in return.

Dirk basically said "Shit, I'd trade myself for Kobe."

58

u/Ironredhornet Pistons 16d ago

Reminds me of when Laremy Tunsil got traded from the Dolphins to the Texans in the NFL for a large haul of picks. The Dolphins front office told him about the trade and what they got in return and his response was basically "Shit I'd trade me for that to"

4

u/GPCAPTregthistleton [ATL] Rasheed Wallace 16d ago

Texans get:

  • Laremy Tunsil, LT, 2016 draft R1, P13: this was considered slipping in the draft due to the the gasmask bong incident;
  • Kenny Stills, WR: had a 9-year run in the NFL, a solid, unremarkable career;
  • a 4th- and a 6th-round pick.

Dolphins get:

  • Two 1st-round picks, (2020#26, 2021#3)
  • a second-, (2021#36)
  • a 4th-round LT downgrade to replace Tunsil,
  • and a UDFA on his 4th team.

It's not the Rudy Gobert trade (5 firsts and 5 players [Pat Bev, Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Walker Kessler, Leandro Bolmaro] for Rudy and a first), but it's a haul.

Much like the Jazz, the Dolphins found a way to be the losers of the trade.

53

u/WaxAstronaut 17d ago edited 17d ago

You’d think, but there are examples of this in NBA history. Lamar Odom was very good and productive (just won 6MOY a couple months prior) when he was traded for Chris Paul in a move that was later cancelled. He couldn’t cope and the Lakers had to trade him to the Mavs for pretty much nothing, and he was never the same after (shot 35% and was out of the league soon after).

Edit: I know he had other stuff going on but it’s impossible to say if his career would’ve fallen off a cliff the same way if it weren’t for the trade, he seemed really broken up by it to the point they had to move him for nothing.

95

u/Enterprise-DeezNuts Spurs 17d ago

Yes, however, I believe he had a family member that died that offseason. If I remember correctly, that was the lockout season and he was hoping to the lockout would continue so he could focus on his mental health but that didn't happen. The trade was finally pushed him over the edge

6

u/YSLAnunoby Raptors 16d ago

There still is a lot of work to be done but it's a shame that there weren't as many mental health resources for players back then compared to now. I hope situations like Brandon Clarke's help them with creating better policy

Yea I liked BI, I don't know why people are hating on him so much

He took a ton of pressure off Scottie, didn't complain about his situation, showed up and did as best as he could. He was unfortunately hurt but he's not nearly as bad as everyone seems to make him out to be. Like is he a top tier superstar? no. But everyone talks about him like he's MPJ or something

Kawhi if healthy is an upgrade on BI, but how many players is healthy Kawhi not an upgrade on

It would be one of those what if’s if he was actually healthy to play against the Cavs. He still had gravity instead of the Cavs defense homing in on Scottie.

I know. The Cavs were blitzing every time he tried to back his man and they ended up getting him to turn it over. He was still an extra body if healthy that could have relieved Scottie cause he was getting tired by the end of it.

In 2013 The Raptors traded Kyle Lowry to the Knicks for Raymond Felton, Metta World Peace, and a draft pick.

The deal was done then James Dolan the Knicks CEO vetoed the trade overturning it.

It ended up being the best thing to happen for Lowry both as a player and for his career. He went on to win the chip in Toronto and become the GROAT so you never know.

He had an entire country of fans behind him, and while hockey will always be king in Canada, the Leafs have been a disaster for decades and the immigrant population in the greater Toronto area loves the Raptors.

He could have been the King of the North but instead decided he’d rather get paid not to plant trees. Dude screwed up his legacy so hard.

6

u/lottolser Raptors 16d ago

Either team changing the deal would look bad to all other teams that neither team would be of their word and untrustworthy. Like in the PWHL Detroit made promises to trade their 1st round pick during a roster freeze for Hilary Knight as a sign and trade, they also promised their players and her they'd sign her. After the everything went back to normal Detroit ended up winning the 3rd overall pick they already had promised to trade to Vegas. They could've back out of the trade, but man would that look bad on them so they made the trade and kept their word.

Raptors traded away the two players that contributed the least during the playoffs and replaced them with Kawhi Leonard. Both BI and Gradey were negative contracts - it would've cost a first round pick just to get rid of BI's contract alone.

I'm not surprised the terms haven't changed. Since Kawhi wasn't suspended nothing has changed in the Raptor's perspective. Negotiating in bad faith like that guarantees that other GMs won't trade with you ever again.

Idk why so many Raptors fans (and other fanbases) are tripping about this.

We are clearly more likely to be a good basketball team with Kawhi Leonard than we are with Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick (and whoever those picks turn out to be in the future).

This is more likely to move us closer to contention than the assets we are giving up would.

No need to overthink things.

20

In terms of basketball Kawhi seems fairly healthy and just made an All-NBA team last season with 28ppg on nearly 50/40/90 splits. Sure, he remains a health risk, but people acting like moving on from BI to Kawhi isn't massive are genuinely stupid. Scottie has been getting better and better and RJ has come a long way from where he started as well. One of their biggest issues was individual shot creation causing stagnation when the game slows down which Kawhi excels at. They have a good mix of size and defense. Nearly won 50 games last season and took Cavs to 7. Now they've added a multiple time champion who is levels better than BI.

And 3 players (KL, SB, CMB) who are elite defenders against like size players, and can switch 1 to 5 somewhere between good enough and perfectly.

Those picks are likely going to be at the end of the draft, especially on the front end.

The East is such a fking blood bath this year. Hoping for a Raps vs Sixers series. Would be so cathartic for the winning team.

win a title and leave for LA

I'd be okay with this only if he also ruins the lakers for the next 10 years.

I was thinking just a title but winning and then heading to the Lakers would be extra funny

This year was on par with 2016 and 2019 off seasons and this was absolutely the craziest off season of the 2020's decade. 2016 will always be number one I've personally witnessed though between KD and once in a life time league wide cap boost that is now illegal in the CBA

2018 free agency/trades gotta be the most random ones in league history ever, like kawhi to raptors, bron to lakers, demarcus cousins to the warriors, tony parker to the hornets, melo to houston, dwight to washington, and then the draft with trae, luka, and shai.

So at the end of the day this boils down to the Clippers only having 2 1sts in a 5 year span. That’s a common occurrence in the NBA.

I don’t hate getting Kawhi as he’s the best we can ever get, but I hate that the clippers are getting actual compensation. We shoulda said kick rocks

25

u/bta47 Warriors 17d ago

clippers had to trade him, but they didn't have to trade him to you so they still had enough leverage to get compensation. lots of teams would have liked to get him even with... everything

43

u/Haunting_Test_5523 17d ago

The Clippers can also say kick rocks to a deal that doesnt involve unprotected picks

9

u/sakata32 [LAC] Sam Cassell 17d ago

They you wouldnt get kawhi. I'm sure detroit would do a kawhi rental for 1 pick.

Why is everyone saying that the Raptors got fleeced now? It was a good trade then and it's a good trade now.

Gradey Dick has been the single biggest stain on TORs otherwise spectacular draft record over the passed several years. Glad to put Dick behind us

I can't believe we got this package. Raptors fans were convincing me they were gonna away with a single pick.

u/brainspl0ad Clippers 17d ago

Man. Get him the fuck outta here. Who knew I'd be more excited about him leaving than signing him to begin with.

How do you do a 1st round pick swap when you don't have 1st round picks to swap?

3

u/Financial-Grass-6114 16d ago

This is why I dont think clippers are as screwed as people think (atleast from an assets POV). Their front office team management are decent so they'll bounce back quickly. They just got unlucky with this Kawhi and Paul George bet.

3

u/zeroxray Vancouver Grizzlies 16d ago

Contract should be voided and trade nullified. This trade benefits the cheaters too much

3

u/AtreusIsBack NBA 16d ago

Now imagine what the Luka trade would have looked like if Nico wasn't such a snake and shadow traded him. The haul would be biblical.
