[Charania] Toronto Raptors guard Jamal Shead has agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract extension with the franchise, his agent KJ Smith tells ESPN. The new deal keeps Shead under contract through the 2029-30 season.

Raptors actually signed a player to a team friendly deal? World is changing.

u/KGB4L Raptors 4h ago
I mean aside from last 1.5 years, we’ve had some amazing contracts all the time. We literally got OG to sign the cheapest contract possible, and he was the last guy to sign during his window (meaning he saw what the market was).
10
u/Elaiyu Raptors 4h ago
Masai I love you but you were smoking something with that IQ contract, and plus the whole haul we got for Siakam, FVV, Powell, OG, and Lowry was basically nothing.
18
u/Carlos-Dangerzone 4h ago
understandably seems he got a bit sentimental about the guys he found in the rough and won a championship with. hung on a little too long to almost all of them. I don't really blame him.
he really went on an all-time run in drafting and player development for 4 or 5 years there.
7
u/blafricanadian Raptors 3h ago
He wasn’t sentimental. The league froze him out.
There is no prospective trade that was rejected that wasn’t an absolutely stupid idea. People blew picks because they didn’t want to be fleeced by massai.
Look at the kings, bulls and warriors.
Warriors could have had 2 more chips by now
2
u/DirtyDanoTho [TOR] Hakeem Olajuwon 2h ago
Lowry for Maxey and a 1st getting rejected because he wanted Maxey, Thybulle and a 1st was objectively stupid
3
5
u/Rezrov_ Raptors 2h ago
I believe the full haul as it stands right now is: RJ, IQ, Shead, old Kawhi (-2 FRPs), and Ja'Kobe Walter.
Definitely fumbled the full potential value but that's still 3 starters, and two early bench players. Honestly the biggest screw up was Powell for GTJ imo. Powell never ended up getting very expensive but he was valuable everywhere he went.
3
u/KGB4L Raptors 3h ago
That’s trades. But contracts and contract extensions aside from Yak have been our strong points. Even IQ, while overpaid, has the contract structured in a way that’s extremely beneficial for the team by the end of it.
We’ll see how they do with RJ, i sincerely hope Bobby can pull it off.
1
u/DJSTEVEINNIAMIXX Raptors 1h ago edited 42m ago
I dont get the IQ contract hate. He averaged 16 pts on good efficiency with a fantastic ast/TO ratio and has extremely good underlying metrics. He had the 2nd highest EPM on the team last year. 2nd in BPM, had a higher WS/60 than Barnes, etc. Injuries, sure, but prior to last year he was mostly just out for tanking (and didnt have many injury concerns when the contract was signed).
Im not sure what people expect from a dude making that much. He provides more/as much value as the guys around him in that pay range:
1
u/Elaiyu Raptors 44m ago
His contract is massively overpaid considering he does nothing defensively, he's not a good defender at all and doesn't have a great shot for his price of 32M.
1
u/DJSTEVEINNIAMIXX Raptors 30m ago
Again, thats just not true when looking at advanced stats. Hes actually quite average on defence (much better than RJ!), and his offence is some of the best on the team (good efficiency/shooting with elite AST/TO ratio).
Its in no way "massively overpaid". RJ is a worse contract imo.
Also, I expect his shooting will improve this year since hes not going to be the only guy out there who can actually shoot on the starting 5.
22
u/PokePersona [TOR] Nick Nurse 4h ago
Ironically, the Kawhi extension was also more team friendly than expected since it was under the max by a notable amount and has an option he can decline for a cheaper extension down the line.
3
u/jdd32 Spurs 3h ago
Maybe better than expected. But I feel like that deal was more than fair considering his age, injury history, and the aspiration circus he's bringing with him. Even though he was really awesome last year.
The raps should legit have him play every other game until ramping up for the playoffs. I love Scottie so I'd love to see them make some noise in the east.
My dream finals would me Spurs/Raps just for the drama, lol.
5
u/Gavin1453 Raptors 3h ago
To make it even more dramatic, we'll have to have a re-match against Philly/LeBron too. Maybe we'll even sign Kyrie to give him a match up against LeBron too, lol
3
u/PokePersona [TOR] Nick Nurse 3h ago
I agree it's definitely fair, it's just that a lot of people were expecting Kawhi to just get the full max so even a little savings helps a lot.

$11m is notable since the Raptors are right against the cap and it gives them more wiggle room to re-sign their upcoming RFAs.
He just took a cheaper deal than the max I can definitely see it being a legacy play thing but a lot of players reject the PO if an extension is available since it’s more money overall (and you never know at his age) but we’ll see. I would say it’s more likely he rejects than extends based on what people in the know are saying.
-1
u/DynastyInProcess Thunder 4h ago
They’re right up against the first apron RIGHT NOW. BEFORE the extension kicks in. They’re probably gonna be a second apron team (or very very close to it) next season depending on how that Barrett extension looks. You’re kinda counting on Barrett taking something very team friendly or Toronto giving up 2 1sts to dump Quickley or Poeltl
2
u/PokePersona [TOR] Nick Nurse 4h ago
Yeah they’re definitely going over the cap next season but my point is where they’re at right now any cheaper than max deal is going to help the team so Kawhi being $11m cheaper is going to help with keeping the RFAs the next few seasons (especially after the Shead extension).
I think there’s a realistic chance the Raptors dump RJ’s contract if Ja’Kobe takes another leap this season assuming he doesn’t take a team friendly deal (they reportedly haven’t sat down and discussed an extension yet).

u/Cheechers23 Raptors 4h ago
SHEAD HEADS RISE UP
Honestly that’s right where I thought an extension for Shead would land. Good stuff.

u/Practical_Basketball 4h ago
$8 million a year for a solid backup point guard with some potential is a great deal! His numbers don’t do his impact justice

u/Odd-Air-5598 [TOR] Scottie Barnes 4h ago
MY GUY we lowk scammed him with this. hes a great player

u/whyyouwannaknow4 76ers 4h ago
He’s a great / real dude, I’ve played with him on 2k 😂I’m lowkey happy he’s resigned period
9
20
u/Barracuda374 Heat 4h ago
He’s shot under 39% from the field for his career and isn’t a three point shooter yet. He had to take $8m/yr.
8
u/Billis- Raptors 3h ago
He can lead the point and has a half decent assist to turnover ratio
He's a backup PG that takes 5 shots a game. We pay him to facilitate, defend, and not turn the ball over.
Kinda like Davion Mitchell except cheaper
4
u/DirtyDanoTho [TOR] Hakeem Olajuwon 2h ago
He’s also pretty clutch honestly. Yeah his percentages aren’t good but it feels like this past season he hit a lot of clutch shots
3
u/Barracuda374 Heat 2h ago
Davion is a more proven shooter but he did make his first shooting leap in year 3 so i can see the vision
1
u/DJSTEVEINNIAMIXX Raptors 1h ago
by half decent you mean top 10 in the league, then yes. He doesnt turn the ball over. Its crazy considering how defences already know hes not going to shoot and hes still so effective.
26
u/salukiwa Knicks 4h ago
Seems like a fair deal for all involved. He's not a great player. He shoots under 40% from the field
44
u/Steridire Knicks 4h ago
He's a great playmaker and great on defence, his scoring is abysmal but 8 million per year is a great deal for someone who can run the second unit and be a huge positive to your defence.
11
u/KGB4L Raptors 4h ago
His ceiling is low, but his floor is also pretty high (to his standard). It’s a great deal, cause realistically he could get 10-12 range. But Jamal being undrafted undersized non-shooting PG isn’t exactly a super wanted guy. Raptors lock a bench PG for cheap, Jamal gets guaranteed money. Win-win.
6
u/salukiwa Knicks 4h ago
Seems like a fair to good player. If you're scoring is abysmal I wouldn't consider that a great player or worth more then 8 mil a year

How
17
u/kyle_993 Raptors 4h ago
He's a great passer and defender. Even with him being unable to score he has one of the highest net rating on our team.
3
u/Barracuda374 Heat 4h ago
That’s because opponents shot 32% from three when he was on the floor vs 36.4% when quickley was on the floor.
2
u/salukiwa Knicks 4h ago
But from an NBA player standpoint he is good. 8 mil a year seems like proper value. Maybe a bit less or more on the open market. Not a team friendly deal
8
u/BrTalip Raptors 4h ago
Well, for starters, you are coming in with an opinion of a guy you clearly don’t watch play.
1
u/salukiwa Knicks 4h ago
I have watched him play wtf? He plays in the same division as the Knicks. He's not that great. Raptors will be good this year but that won't be because of Sheas. Y'all are better then last year but let's not create narratives of great contracts or an amazing front office deal when this is just standard. Good luck on the year. I think y'all will be much better
5
u/BrTalip Raptors 4h ago
Watching a guy only when they play the Knicks doesn’t qualify.
1
u/salukiwa Knicks 51m ago
Ok how much do I need to watch him so that I qualify for my take mattrering?
-2
u/Ok-Honeydew7983 4h ago
Your take is correct. Shea is a fan favourite and a spark plug off the bench, but he’s not a “great” player. This deal seems like fair value.
9
u/AllOutRaptors Raptors 4h ago
Hes one of the best bench playmaker in the league and a really solid backup pg. Idc if he makes 7/20 shots instead of 9/20. He doesnt shoot enough for that to be a major concern
8
0
u/attersonjb 4h ago
That's part of the problem. A PG - even a backup - who can't score in 2026 is an issue. It's a lot harder to make plays for other people when the defense doesn't have to guard you.
5
u/DavidKirk2000 Raptors 3h ago
He led the entire NBA in assists off the bench last season. He’s a phenomenal playmaker even with his scoring issues.
2
u/DJSTEVEINNIAMIXX Raptors 1h ago
Also, his Ast/TO ratio is literally elite. Hes top 10 in that department last year (as is quickley).
5
u/Cheechers23 Raptors 4h ago
If he’s the exact same as last year it’s probably a bit of an overpay. But if his shooting and/or finishing at the rim develop, this becomes a great value deal
2
u/Odd-Air-5598 [TOR] Scottie Barnes 4h ago
You gotta watch him to see how impactful this guy is. 8 million a year for how much we're gonna need him is a steal. He probably could get slightly more

Dude AJ Mitchell can actually score in droves. Love Jamal but this isn't some sort of scam deal IMO
4

Sure but Ajay Mitchell is probably 12 tiers better than Shead lol
Think it’s more comparable to someone like Kris Dunn who’s a starting-caliber two-guard making $6M.

Raptors draft strategy of just sorting by college BPM and picking whoever is highest sorta works. Worked with CMB and hopefully will with Graves as well. Mogbo not so much.

People here need to stop looking at the stats, he impacts winning with all the little stuff he does, he was honestly a pretty big part of why raps saw success in the playoffs, he a dog on defence too
Definitely not a home run deal but a win/win for both sides
9
u/DynastyInProcess Thunder 4h ago
Think he could’ve made more next Summer after this season but, considering how little he’s made in his NBA career so far this makes sense.
Seems like the Raptors are preparing for this team to get real expensive real fast. The $100M+ extensions for guys like Barnes, Leonard, Barrett, and CMB are either here or very fast approaching. A guy like Ja’Kobe Walter ain’t gonna be cheap either.
7
u/Chief_White_Halfoat Raptors 4h ago
CMB was a rookie. They've got three years of him making less than his value to GO. Which is obviously the window that also lines up with Kawhi's deal
JaKobe/RJ is the meaningful split here. If JaKobe takes a jump I imagine the Raptors will be ok with RJ going elsewhere even though he's obviously loved by fans and is Canadian. If JaKobe is about the same as last year he could be relatively cheap and then you maybe can consider keeping RJ.
8
u/ComputerLess8024 4h ago
Might of been able to make more but if I’m a role player in the 2nd apron era I’d rather just secure my money then risk FA tbh
Anfarnee Simons got a 2/12 this last offseason it’s a horrible market

u/Elaiyu Raptors 3h ago edited 3h ago
Barrett is not getting extended, realistically he's getting traded, it's more likely the FO is preparing to extend Ja'Kobe in his place
1
u/Billis- Raptors 3h ago
Raps fans have been saying this about RJ since we got him.
Everything depends on this season. If the role that RJ carves out this year is worth what he thinks it's worth, then we'll extend him. Otherwise he'll either be worth too much to keep or he'll walk.
He won't be traded.
-5
u/Elaiyu Raptors 3h ago
Ja'Kobe is 10x the player RJ is, if we extend RJ, we have no room for Ja'Kobe. And this FO still hasn't extended him on his expiring contract, we need to move off cap space. RJ is the odd one out because IQ and Poeltl contracts cannot be moved

u/Billis- Raptors 3h ago

If RJ performs this year he won't be moved. Dude did well in the playoffs with us last season and has proven he can be effective both off ball and as a spark with the bench.
The problem will be he'll want too much if he performs and if he doesn't perform he'll go to FA anyway

Davion over the last 2 seasons on 3 3s a game at just a hair under 40%. Jamal ahead on the same volume in the same time period is shooting 32%. Davion is also a bigger and better defender
1
u/Billis- Raptors 54m ago
He's not a better defender, but Davion is indeed likely worth a bit more than the 8 that Shead signed for.
Id say if you look at trajectory, Ahead is better than Davion was at the same age or in the same NBA season. That said, Davion did develop into something useful over time after his stint with the Raptors.

Indiana is paying TJ McConnell $11M. Your team is paying Marcus Smart $6M which is close enough. Shead is 8 years younger and has time to develop a shot
$8M feels totally fair

it’s always funny to me when there’s a great college player, but he falls in the draft because people worry he won’t translate, and then he’s just a good NBA player
