[O’Connor] A sign-and-trade involving Duren would be particularly complicated because of base-year compensation rules. Detroit could legally make a trade with all four of the teams that have reported interest in Duren. Here's a look at those possibilities:
Pistons/Bucks
Bucks get: Jalen Duren
Pistons get: Myles Turner, Jaime Jaquez
Pistons/Hawks
Hawks get: Jalen Duren
Pistons get: Onyeka Okongwu, Aaron Wiggins, Corey Kispert
Pistons/Kings
Kings get: Jalen Duren, Ron Holland, Paul Reed, Chaz Lanier
Pistons get: Domantas Sabonis, Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell
Pistons/Wizards
Wizards get: Jalen Duren, Duncan Robinson, Ron Holland, Chaz Lanier
Pistons get: Anthony Davis

Yeah I’d vastly prefer Okongwu for $16m a year to Duren for like $40m+ a year.

u/nowhathappenedwas NBA 3h ago
Sure, but Kispert/Wiggins for $23M/year is dead weight.
40
u/Lightning_Warrior Hawks 3h ago
I’m not sold on the idea the Wiggins is some anchor of a contract. The dude was just a good rotation player on a title winner and he’s making significantly less than the MLE.
And for the Hawks especially I think the value of playing centers who can shoot (e.g. Okongwu, Landale) is a lot higher than for a normal team given the importance of Dyson Daniels, who no one respects from 3, to the team.

u/SloshaPacana 3h ago
Wiggins was awful in the playoffs for OKC, his good rotational year regular season was him sitting in around the 3 point line and getting free shots, like that's valuable but he's looked pretty awful in the playoffs and last regular season too
9m is really nothing his contract is not bad
•
u/Resident-Cancel7284 Pistons 1m ago
I agree with your second paragraph. The Pistons last year with Ausar and Duren are not how you want to build a team, and that's kinda what the Hawks would be doing with Daniels and Duren.

Wiggins is good, fair value and looking forward to him playing
Kispert… yeah you right about that one

It’s better than Duren peacing out after a QO
3
u/P5Manchero 3h ago
Is it actually though? His contract is horrible. 2 years left plus a player option. If I could choose to either have Turner on his current contract or literally nothing, I’d choose literally nothing tbh. I’d rather find some young athletic rim runner for cheap than have big money tied up in Turner.
1
u/Exotic_Pension_9993 Suns 2h ago
I wonder if it might make more sense for a team like Detroit that has already committed 5 years to one starter who can’t shoot at all (Ausar)
Maybe turner himself is washed, but I could see the front office believing that Ausar + center who can’t shoot or space the floor limits their ceiling and wants to see how the team looks with a floor-spacing center

Not sure Bucks would give Ware up
Maybe Pistons would settle for picks plus Turner and Jamie.
That's a pretty good package

4
u/P5Manchero 3h ago
It’s good based on the conceptual idea of Myles Turner; but last season showed that conceptual idea no longer exists. Dude was one of the worst starting centers in the league last year. Doesn’t protect the rim like he used to, can’t rebound, can’t score on the interior.
5
u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 3h ago
Last season on the Bucks was also a bit of a mess, so I don’t know how much certainty we can draw from his performance tbh
2
u/P5Manchero 3h ago
The certainty I can draw from it is that even if he has a bounce back his contact is a toxic negative asset.

u/Professional-Bit1957 3h ago
Atlanta wouldn't do it. This FO/coaching staff are too bought-in on shooting centers, and Okongwu is JJ's best friend IRL. I just don't see it. Only possibility I see from Atlanta would be to send them Jock and Nickeil and Kispert, or something like that. Basically, send the backup center and a higher-end wing player. Doubt DET likes that, though, so you probably need a third team.

is he in the running for offseason mvp? i’d say kuminga was the front runner for a while, but duren has been making a strong push lately
11
u/sportsinaround Hornets 3h ago
I don't like the overall trade at all but I think the idea of Sabonis w/ Cade would be a lot better than people give it credit for. Top-tier rebounder too and he solves a lot of offensive stagnation concerns from not really having secondary playmakers. He can pass well from the post and even transition. Granted there are defensive concerns but Duren isn't exactly a defensive stalwart himself.
3
u/InternationalClick78 Spurs 3h ago
He’s a bad defender that doesn’t space the floor; that’s a concern on any team but especially this Detroit team who doesn’t have a lot of shooting in general, and almost all of their shooters are also defensive liabilities who need to be slotted into defence focused lineups
4
u/Ok_Tonight_4311 Pistons 3h ago
He spaces the floor better than Duren and he playmakes better.
2
u/InternationalClick78 Spurs 2h ago
There’s a very negligible difference between the floor spacing of a complete non shooter and an inefficient low volume shooter. The exact specifics of their numbers aren’t really relevant, what’s relevant if teams have any concern a player will beat them from 3 and punish them from lax defensive coverage. We have years of sample showing teams are not concerned about Sabonis doing that to him.
The playmaking is better sure but focusing 45+ million on someone for playmaking when your roster has other significant needs is a bad use of resources
1
u/ThatBull_cj 76ers Bandwagon 2h ago
Duren roll gravity is way more impactful for spacing than sabions shooting 2 wide open 3s a game. Sabions a good roller but he got zero vertical spacing isn’t even a better short roll scorer than Duren
2
u/sportsinaround Hornets 3h ago
Duren doesn't space the floor outside of pulling defenders as an efficient inside finisher. He doesn't shoot. Sabonis is not consistent from outside but can actually hit an open 3 here and there in addition to midrange jumpers. And by being a well-above average passer he provides continuation for possessions by getting the ball effectively to his teammates especially in conjunction with his rebounding for second chance opportunities. This effectively spaces the floor in its own right. Duren also has major flaws defensively. His defense is pretty much completely reliant on raw athleticism. His awareness, sluggishness in closeouts/switching, rim protection, etc all leaves much to be desired. The point is Sabonis is an interesting offensive fit not to say he's good defensively. Though he can hold his own in the post in more traditional matchups.
1
u/InternationalClick78 Spurs 2h ago
Which is largely why I think they’re better off doing a sign and trade to move him.
Sabonis takes an average of 2-3 jumpers beyond 10 feet and hits them at a very inefficient rate. His theoretical ability to hit a jumper doesn’t mean much when he actively doesn’t; teams regularly dare him to shoot cause they know he’s not gonna beat them with it, so he still doesn’t space the floor very much.
Duren isn’t a good defender but he has defensive strengths and by most metrics clocks in around neutral while Sabonis outside of like 1 year in Indiana has always been a clear liability

u/SSj_CODii 2h ago
Myles Turner has a semblance of a shot and has been a key piece in a Finals run. I’d be ecstatic at that trade.

u/stephenagoldstein 3h ago
I doubt the hawks offer this. OO is on a great contact for two more years. And it's unclear that duren is a substantial upgrade. Kispert is a negative asset but makes the numbers work. Would be surprised if hawks pull this trigger.
3
u/Professional-Bit1957 3h ago
No way we'd pull the trigger on this imo. Duren is a defensive upgrade, albeit not that big of one imo, and a big downgrade on offense for how we play.

Duren is definitely better than Okongwu in a vacuum, but the fact that he'd be getting paid 2.5x Okongwu's salary and the spacing concerns that would arise from the swap and I probably wouldn't do a straight up swap, much less a deal that Detroit might consider taking (Duren for Okongwu/salary/1-2 FRPs)

Turner is halfway washed and makes too much money. Okongwu had a better season than him last year, is younger and on a much more manageable contract

I completely disagree the options here provide solid players in return. Paying 200 million for Duran is a mistake.
1
u/smalls_1804 Knicks 2h ago
Turner in theory is at least really helpful to open up space for Cade and to solve the problem of Thompson clogging the offense when he shares the floor with a non-shooting center. Bucks also have a ton of ball-handling guards and the Pistons need a secondary creator. It's a disappointing return value wise for sure, however, the fit coming back could compensate a lot for that value and it lets the Pistons not have $40m devoted to the center position in a league where that's becoming increasingly infeasible if your center isn't a superstar.

“First, they have a $15 million traded player exception from sending Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this year, and a $5.2 million traded player exception from sending Marcus Sasser to the Dallas Mavericks . Those exceptions would allow the Pistons to absorb more salary in return, making matching easier.”
TPEs cannot be aggregated in trades, so this is incorrect. Most of these trades would not be legal
2
u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 3h ago
Multiple TPEs cannot be combined to acquire a single player (ie combining $10m and $5m to acquire a $15m player), but afaik a team can use multiple TPEs within the same transaction to acquire multiple players
3
u/DanTheMan14331 Knicks 3h ago
You can use a $15 million TPE to acquire a player/players making up to $15 million as a separate transaction. You can’t combine a $20 million salary (Duren BYC), $10 million salary (Holland) and a $15 million TPE to acquire a $45 million salary (Sabonis) as the author suggests in the article.
Also, separate issue but no you are not allowed to combine two TPEs into one bigger TPE.
2
u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 3h ago
The TPEs in that example are to take in Cardwell and Raynaud, not Sabonis. Sabonis’ incoming salary is matched by sending out Duren/Paul/Holland/Lanier, and the Kings match that incoming salary by sending out Sabonis and then Cardwell/Raynaud into TPEs
1
u/DanTheMan14331 Knicks 3h ago
Again, the TPE can’t be aggregated. The Pistons can use their TPE to take in Cardwell and Raynaud without sending out any salary, roster limits aside. However, the $15 million TPE can’t count as “outgoing salary” combined with other players to get Sabonis. Because of BYC Duren and Holland are not enough outgoing salary for the trade to be legal.
7
u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 3h ago edited 3h ago
Here’s the passing trade constructed in Spotrac, with Cardwell and Raynaud both going into Detroit’s TPEs. Assuming Duren gets his 4 year max from Sac, Detroit is sending out $37.4m (BYC of Duren, Holland, Paul, and Lanier) and taking in $45.5m, below their limit of $47m. Raynaud and Cardwell do not count towards this incoming salary because Detroit is taking them into their TPEs
Sacramento is sending out $49.8m and taking back $58m, below their limit of $62.5m. The trade is legal
edit: you’re correct in saying that you can’t combine a $20m salary with a $15m TPE to match a $35m player, but that’s not what’s happening in this trade

I’d make the Bucks trade all day if I’m the Pistons front office. Turner would be a good fit in their spacing starved offense and could be a nice compliment with Collins at the 4. Jacquez could feast on second units as the primary rotation facilitator.
They might need to include Holland or more to sweeten the pot and make the Bucks interested. There might even be a construction where they could make the package bigger and take back Herro, a player they’ve reportedly targeted for a while.

They chased off the lakers and other teams just to throw him a low ball offer with insulting weight clauses in his contract and pissed him off.

Finally watched his highlights. Big, buff, run the floor, defense, good hands and dunks. Yeah he's worth it. If he can get a good mid range he's going to be a monster.

The Bucks trade seems like it would be the best for the Pistons. I understand the idea of Turner is better than the reality but they at least get a relatively better and much needed floor spacer at the position. Jacquez also gives them better offense at the forward spot which they really need.
The Hawks trade is nice too but they definitely need more size in a supplementary deal.

I know people here think Myles Turner is barely a step up from Earl Barron for some reason but he is such a great fit with Cade and the rest of the roster that they should say fuck it to the extension and just make that trade the priority.
Having a 5 that can even half reliably shoot jumpers when you have a thompson twin is fucking paramount to being a real championship contender
And if you're the bucks I think this makes you a 30+ win team. Ware and Duren is a crazy promising front court and Turner probably won't be giving 100% given how things are at this very moment in Milwaukee.

I think AJ Green instead of Jacquez would be better for both teams. And Turner has become underrated after a shit season with Giannis missing tons of games and throwing a hissy fit, KPJ(their second best playmaker) missing most of the season, and Doc not understanding what a stretch 5 actually does.
Plus, Turner's biggest weakness, rebounding, is heavily negated because the Pistons are so good at it.

Why would we give up extra to lose Duren? None of those trades where we lose multiple players make sense

You don’t understand salary matching do you?

“Why would the Pistons sell Holland and their starting SG for Anthony Davis” is a completely valid question

The specific players probably aren’t all that important, but the important part is only half of Duren’s new contract would count as salary going out so to match these huge contracts coming back you’d need to include additional salaries.
In every scenario except the Hawks, you can’t do a 1 for 1 swap, you’d need to add players to make the money work.

IDK why the Pistons would want 3 centers from the Kings. Like... Surely there's something else that can be added instead lol.
