These types of changes reduce our capabilities in the short term. By the time we have the bandwidth to properly identify how we can continue to function, shit's so fucked up that we have to go at least part of the way back to how it was to try to fix things. Of course, those people with experience and acumen aren't directly replaceable by just promoting the next person who survived the purge, so we continue trending downward.
Not completely unrepairable, but completely unreasoned, unnecessary, self-inflicted damage to our national defense and diplomatic capability that, as Sen. Kelly pointed out, will take a generation to recover from.

So not only have we whittled away our munitions stockpiles fighting the dumbest war in American history, we're also cutting our military's institutional knowledge to the bone.
Our armed forces aren't just going to be weaker, they're also going to be dumber.
And we killed American soft power by nuking USAID and alienating all our allies.
Swell. Fantastic. Nice.

This is it. They don't want experienced military leaders evaluating the situation to come up with strategies before giving orders; the politicians will decide what they want done, the bootlickers will rubber stamp it, and the unthinking "warfighters" will carry out the orders without question.

- This is a loyalty purge, removing generals who might refuse unconstitutional orders
- A coup in progress.
- A coup would be self-defeating,
- Americans are unlikely to resist a real coup.

There is a name for this. It's called a coup. The sad part is... I honestly don't think people grasp how dangerous the Republican Party has become. They have no regard for our democracy, our institutions, or our freedoms. They only want extreme wealth and power.
44
21
u/warmfuzzume 21h ago
They want more than wealth and power, they want to rule the world and space in the name of their religion.
“The Pentagon also will launch an effort to study the future of warfare that will be led in part by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Hegseth said. The Defense Department will create an Office of Religious Affairs and plans to build a new base for the first time in 40 years, he added.”
I don’t mean to hijack the top comment but I scrolled way down and didn’t see a single person say anything about the italics. Why is the military creating an office of religious affairs? When we know they are Christian Nationalists? And now they have weapons in space?
Meanwhile JD Vance even said he wouldn’t mind if what they’re doing brought on the end times?
What in the actual fuck, this shit is next level scary and insane.

Pretty much. They're obviously purging military leadership of people who would likely resist coup-like activity. Presumably aimed at the run up to the next presidential election. Hegseth started purging senior leadership of women and people of color from day 1. The thing is I don't believe the Republican party as a whole are behind this. I think they're so far into a state of denial about the monster they created that they can watch it all happen and imagine commentary pointing it out as overblown or hysterical paranoia. Being a traitor to democracy and being an actual conservative aren't the same thing, not by a mile.

This is also an attempt to prevent a military coup against them.
Likewise, as insane as that may sound to Americans, myself included, installing loyalists in the highest positions ensures they have strict compliance when they order military boots on the ground domestically to stomp opposition.
All that to say you're correct. This is about presidential immunity over Constitutional hierarchy.

Guys, this is really really bad and exactly what I was afraid of. One of our safeguards against the rise of a dictator in America is the military. The top brass are all educated and taught what to do if a leader tries to take over and refuses to give up power. This reeks of a coup in the making. They are purging the military of anyone who would cause a problem when they decide to assume control. This administration has no intention of giving up power.
202
u/Philophon 22h ago
This goes to show that it was never really a safeguard at all. If something is under the control of the executive branch, it is not a guard against it.
And there is no guard against anything when all three branches of government have been compromised. All that remains is The People, and their willingness to fight for a freedom that they may never see again.
We'll be seeing soon if it is already too late for any other future.

I’m not saying you are exactly wrong, but there is a difference between a quiet coup and an open coup. Right now we are in the middle of a quiet coup. Laws are being ignored, corrupt judges are declaring it all legal, and the Democrats in the senate are waiting for the midterms to see what happens. Eventually though Trump is going to have to take that definitive last step where he declares elections over.
→ More replies (14)35
u/Waste-Time-2440 22h ago
The midterms are already being positioned to be "controversial" in many ways, giving losing candidates the excuse they need for refusing to relinquish power. Simultaneously the USPS quietly made a rule that delays postmarks that can cause mail-in ballots to be refused for being apparently cast too late. Only the insiders know in which precincts those ballots will be delayed. Then there's the many election deniers placed into power over state elections, waiting their turn on the stage. Places lik Ft. Worth, reducing the number of polling places but only in likely blue precincts are directly suppressing the vote too.
We are already seeing what happens.

It’s impressive how effective this administration has been at gutting services provided, weakened partnerships, threatened allies, strengthen rivals, wasted resources, crushed tourism, destroyed goodwill, opted out of soft power, wasted military power, forced service members to serve and suffer for nothing, all while not decreasing government spending and increasing cost of living.

When I retired from the military in 2020 (literally ETS'd right before the pandemic) they were already in the midst of an "up or out" campaign. You either took a promotion in some far-flung spot or got booted out. This created a massive brain drain, because they got rid of so many O-3 and 0-4's with vast institutional knowledge in favor of up-and-coming (but less knowledgeable) officers.

This might be a bigger, more imminent problem than people realize. Not all of these generals and admirals could step away quietly. Some may see and call out what this is for what it is, a blatant grab for power and consolidation of support of the current admin within the military. I hope that, at best, nothing happens because of this, as this is already a catastrophic blunder in weakening not just our soft power, but our real power projection. At worst, this turns into the executive branch, and the nation itself by extension, cannibalizing itself as high ranking officers start taking sides.

So why did they double the ready largest military budget in human history within 2 years?
Can’t say it’s for financial reasons. Noodle arm bitch boy

That’s how you get a coup. Fire the ones with morals and boundaries, streamline leadership to true believers and ta da…coup attempt incoming.

Trump will fight to stay in office and stay in power. I know the midterms are coming up and if we assume democrats take control, I dont think an impeachment will stop him or get his cabinet to leave. He has violated the law so many times till now, I dont think he will let the lawful process of an impeachment stop him. I will vote regardless and I urge everyone to as well. But if I have to bet on Donald Trump respecting a lawful impeachment and then leaving office to face judgement for his crimes, or in the face of impeachment, decide to seize power completely, I believe he will do the later.

I think this is less about being a leaner force and more about getting rid of the 20% of officers they don't like for ideological reasons.

Remember that Hegseth pitched and got almost DOUBLE the military budget from Congress. Selling it’s as “security” costs, but cutting people out who could provide said security?
Someone check Pete’s pockets.

People need to vote in November if they want to stop the current administration from doing much worse than this. Let's see if the American people woke up yet or not.

Anyone in the military have an opinion on this? Is the top of the leadership bloated? Or is this just political
purging.

Recently former military, worked in info and politics, so with some authority I opine it’s purely political and deliberate. It’s removing the hurdles between civilian leaders and military personnel. This translates to less pushback of civilian orders, and allows yes-men into top spots.

Retired Army O-6 here. I peacetime Army should be top-heavy, because we can quickly draft and train new troops, but you can't quickly train the leaders, something we figured out in World War Two.
It took 25 years and two graduate degrees to complete my training for my final command assignment.
If you get rid of much of the senior leadership, a future draft military will be poorly led.
As usual, Trump and the drunk reserve major who never held company command don't know what they are doing.

Putin and Xi Jinping have never had such a hard erection in their life. You could pick 20 uneducated homeless people to run America and they would have been more effective.

> “Hegseth told reporters Monday that the removals were necessary because he didn't want them to pose any "roadblocks to orders that are given by a commander in chief."
Relevant quote from when Hegeseth fired the TJAGS for every branch of the military as soon as Trump took office. Those were the top lawyers who advise military commanders on the lawfulness of orders.
This is just a continuation of the loyalty purges. Same coup, still going strong.
