Hardware G9 Odyssey just... Killed itself?
Just sitting there playing a game, all of a sudden I hear a loud crack and this popped up on my screen. The room was hotter than usual so I fear that might be the case. This happened to anyone else?

Idk. That’s definitely physical damage. It’s cracked along the panel. Displays don’t just break on their own. I’d be very surprised if Samsung covered this under warranty

u/SilverwingX0 23h ago
True, but if they were to approve anyone its got to be this guy, look at that stress pattern, its almost perfect. Kinda indicates a manufacturing issue.

u/nate998877 I7 7700k, 16gb DDR4, RX480 21h ago
centered with 4 equidistant & smooth/curved cracks. Starting from the top. If ever there was a likely manufactures defective screen crack its this. Sag, thermal expansion, & defect lead to the crack?
106
u/Retroficient 20h ago
That's precisely what I'd think if I was a warranty claims specialist for Samsung. It's too perfect not to be from the direct manufacturing. Some sort of failure happened directly center where the Center of Gravity is most likely pulling.
5
u/joeshmo101 6h ago
Then OP better not send them the image with the webcam perched on top of it, causing it to exceed its loading standards and showing that the crack was clearly user fault (half /s half serious)

So, not true. Displays can and do break on their own due to manufacturing defects.

u/BeeDeeEmm R7 5800x | 3090 22h ago
Idk what to tell you, I've always babied that thing. Never bumped it into anything, nothing. Although when I've carried it to move it.around I was always told to grab it by the center, as to not damage the monitor grabbing it from the sides
92
u/ElvisJesus 21h ago
Tension issue is most certainly it and the guy above is partially right it is physical damage but its caused by the manufacturer tolerance, I don't think your the only one who's had this issue either.

u/GrandPoobah395 Desktop - 13900KF - 4090 - 32GB 22h ago
Presumably when raising or lowering it on its stand or arm, you hold in the middle of the curve of the monitor to avoid torquing the screen or underlying parts (not the screen, but at the bezel, obviously). I have the earlier model of this monitor and the manual stated to do that when adjusting or manipulating it.

"Displays don’t just break on their own."
On a flat panel you are correct(mostly)
On a an aggressive curved panel pushing material limits and massive amount of power you are incorrect.
The 49 inch version of the Samsung G9 Neo could draw 180 watts of power by itself. You get a powerful enough PC to run that monitor between 90-240 fps and that room is going to get hot quick. This leads to heat and stress fractures as the materials with different expansion rates expand and contract as you use the monitor and then turn it off.
Back before my G9 Neo shit the bed, I would hear pops from the plastic every now and again with them being much louder and often when it was extremely hot or cold in the house. Eventually one of the two boards on the G9 had a short to ground that caused me to no longer trust it.
Samsung 49 inch G9 Neos had so many manufacturering issues that they dropped their 3 year warranty for a 1 year warranty.

Samsung curved monitors are known to have tension issues which can cause the center of the screen to lift, which could cause physical damage, which should be cover under warranty if that's what happened.
7
u/FlameShadow0 22h ago
Possibly, but I seriously don’t see Samsung covering it. Physical damage is normally the easiest way to deny a warranty.
6
u/Remnant_Echo R7-9800X3D, 5080 FE, 32GB DDR5, W11 22h ago
I know for sure it happens, and I also know for sure Samsung has denied many warranties because of it. It's the entire reason I ended up not going with a G9 (or any 49" ultrawide monitor as a just in case), but I specifically avoided Samsung's other monitors cause they apparently have a denial track record as bad as Asus's.

u/Odur29 21h ago
You need to update your notes again, they can and have due to recent enshitification (last 2-3 years). They can break under their own weight now due to cuts in material quality. My company bought 1700 of these for a number of our gaming lounges, we have cameras throughout our facilities every monitor is covered by these cameras. We've had about 5% roughly 80 panels break during normal operation and sometimes in the middle of the night when no one but cleaning staff and security was around. Each occasion was investigated for legal and insurance reasons. Out of the initial 1700 monitors purchased, almost 190 had to be replaced, roughly 110 of those were due to negligence.

This post is a good example of why your profession is not a “source” of anything.
Displays like this do break on their own. The pattern of the stress lines in the middle make it clear this is a manufacturing defect. You are mistaken.

I researched this exact model a lot before deciding on the monitor I have now, and the reason I didn't go with it, is because of this exact problem happening to people. There are lots of reports of it. Very unfortunate, because it seems like otherwise very good.

Definitely tension of some sort.
When you sit down at your desk, does the monitor bounce/wiggle at all?
Usually when I scoot my chair up to my gaming seating, I always end up bumping my desk and my monitor arms wiggle/shake a bit.
Since you're still on the OEM stand, I'd wonder if this caused stress.

u/BeeDeeEmm R7 5800x | 3090 23h ago

They could absolutely reinforce the monitor to prevent that happening.
There is little to no reason why a £600+ monitor can’t have some reinforcement to withstand this.
The only reason this doesn’t happen more often is because people are complacent and just assume there’s nothing wrong.
Just notice how many people are questioning how OP handled the monitor instead of questioning why these products are made like shit and are unable to hold their weight in the first place.
It’s a prime example of shit being made worse for profit margins instead of making a good, solid, product.

Write to samsung executive care, if the warranty is still valid push and push. Executive care gave me my 3.5k for my ark and let me keep the monitor just bc I wanted it serviced and wouldn't let up, nicely. Still works fine minus some minor lighting issues in a corner and the built in speaker pops out of sound randomly but comes back.

The damage is too symetrical and too centered. Seems it wanted to fold itself like some other Samsung displays.
Anyway, there is clearly a dent dead-center. I could blame OP and say he hit it with something, or the webcam maybe at that position and caused damage due to things unknown... but this seens to synetrical to be caused by a user.

I would cry a little if mine died as I can’t go back to 16:9 after almost 7 years of 32:9 glory. Mine is on an HD wall mount though (33lbs is a hefty one) as I watched the stand stress the fuck out of the monitor by wiggling and moving when the desk did. The stand they come with (at least mine was) is straight fucking garbage as it hangs the monitor over a point instead of supporting it.

turns out having two layers of glass under such extreme tension can have some adverse effects
samsung's curved LCD monitors are known for having tension related issues like the panel lifting off of the frame at the center
