Why are politicians world wide pulling the think of the children schtick? They are hiding behind children to steal any semblance of privacy we have, it's utter bullshit

76

u/SchemingVegetable 4h ago

"Protect the children" is the easiest, most bullshit way to make ignorant people turn to your side.

98

u/NeonArchon 5h ago

Is one of their many scapegoats for stuff like this.

42

u/Creative_Garbage_121 4h ago

Because most people is gullible enough to make sacrifaces in the name of children safety, even when it have nothing to do with it

13

u/Fluid-Sense-4273 3h ago

And allows individuals to not take responsibility for their children and what they can access

0

u/SaoirseSeersha 4h ago

'Most people' Boomers. Only boomers fall for that shit.

10

u/Creative_Garbage_121 3h ago

Haha, you wish, no one need to be a boomer to be gullible

23

u/drazgul 5h ago

Because it works.

Meta has a little army of "non-profit" organizations that currently lobby for the same shit all over the world and I bet my fluffy butt that it isn't the only US-Tech company that currently does this.

6

u/Bye_nao 3h ago

Meta was lobbying against EU breaking E2E encryption in public as the commission kept pushing it. We have homebrewn autocrat problem in EU and should not let legislature and commission hide behind the boogeyman of american companies.

Politicians world wide are all part of The Epstein Club

6

u/IdiotRhurbarb 1h ago

And as the Epstein files showed us, the actual people who put children in danger are exempt.

its such a pre-2000s buzzword, id rather have a redscare 2.0 excuse where surveillance is needed because of russian/iranian/whatever saboteurs and spies

5

u/AstrayNanashi 3h ago

Because politicians always aim for the children angle with everything they do, in one way or another...

10

u/deadshot500 4h ago

I would love to see kids protesting this too

3

u/definitivno-ne-troll 2h ago

Because people keep falling for it.

5

u/Power_Stone 4h ago

It's easy to fight for a group of people that have no voice of their own.

It's the tactic people use in pro-life arguments.

Always have.

Why? Because it works.

  • Most people care about children, sometimes irrationally so
  • Most people don't really understand privacy and the impact of information age technology on privacy
  • Most people are easily scared/bullied into believing all sorts of things if it comes from a place of authority and/or has a kernel of truth somewhere

Bribery, sorry I meant lobbying.

If this doesn't get swatted down by the EU's parliament or court, the whole Union is worse than worthless. Absolute privacy nightmare and absurdly anti-consumer.

They will push it until it will be accepted. Chat Control failed again day or two days ago and they will discuss it again on november.

16

u/DavidHolandaOne 2h ago

It'd be cool if they have blacklist for all these terrible internet bills to avoid passing

too bad it doesn't exist

Not so long ago, people laughed at China for implementing similar measures. Now the EU, the UK and the USA are attempting to do the same. You could argue that these regulations are not as strict, but wait seven to five years for an even stricter version to be passed.

14

u/SirHomoLiberus 4h ago

The UK has done it already with the Online Safety Act.

12

u/fat_pokemon 2h ago

That's the thing that gets me. Other goverments bitched about china's control, but in reality they wernt's angry, or even hateful. They were jealous...

1

u/Mission-Fig6621 1h ago

The problem is that some actors are using privacy rules to attack EU freely, elections interference, spam bots farms, you name it. Of course it is not about kids. politician don’t give a shit about kids in a no election year

Hey, he might save the movement yet again!

u/Alan157 3h ago

"Make your voice heard!" Until the lobbyists come and convince the politicians your voice is worth nothing, just like with Stop Killing Games.

The EU is a joke

21

u/Opposite_Carry_4920 4h ago edited 2h ago

Who keeps starting these? You guys have GOT to kick those fucks out of office man. Every year they are trying to ram shit like this in and chat control. The EU is supposed to protect the world from this kind of stupidity.

Edit: as an American I know, glass houses and all that.

7

u/definitivno-ne-troll 2h ago

They were never elected in the first place.

u/Pocok5 Ryzen 7 5800X3D - AMD RX9070XT - 32GB DDR4-2933 1h ago edited 1h ago

It is a bunch of unelected lobbyist groups exercising leverage largely by bribing the council of the EU and the Commission to act against the will of the Parliament.

Essentially the power to propose legislation sits with the ministers delegated from the national governments (so, usually not directly elected and you need to blast the whole ass party out of your country's government if you are unhappy with one minister's policies) and tends to be more secretive about internal votes. The only public-facing part where the average Joe can interact with the system in practice is the Parliament, which can only vote on the slop presented to it and is open to ratfucking (see: chatcontrol extension passing by one third of the vote earlier).

27

u/redHEP88 GTX 1060 3GB / i7 8700 / 16GB ram 5h ago

Dont say stopped, say changed. Stopped will only get others more defensive, because at face value, who doesnt want eu kids to be safe. Changed would then imply theres only parts of it wrong

9

u/SanargHD Desktop 5h ago

They are arguing for digital age and ID verification (or at least acknowledge that it will come). The petition is about making sure that those verification systems are actually secure and data minimizing and only used for legitimate purposes. They are essentially arguing for the best case implementation of the EUDI wallet.

64

u/Edubbs2008 Windows Enthusiast 6h ago

This is why Digital Sovereignty was a lie, it’s to replace American-made goods with low effort Euro-shit that ends up being a trap to can the Internet.

12

u/Scarpheel 4h ago

Let's no pretend that the american-made services are not shit too tbh

6

u/Mysterious-Cell-2473 3h ago

This doesn't work. EU is not legal entity or democratic one. Last time it took millions signatures and long transparent campaign, which was erased by ONE meeting with Ubisoft behind CLOSED DOORS!

3

u/StaticSystemShock 4h ago

I'm tired boss. Corporate political fucks are paid to relentlessly push this shit and we're suppose to "fight" this in our free time. I can't anymore. Also this shit will pass either way because that is the will of the rich. To have total and absolute control over us even online. Only place where they couldn't up till now. This is a point where internet dies.

5

u/PuzzleheadedWhile9 3h ago

Your daily reminder that all government is slavery 😉

5

u/Historical-Mall11 1h ago

I imagine a bright future, where you need your ID to access the internet, which is 99% AI slop, from your computer, that cost 70 trillion. Way to go, psychopaths.

1

u/Sorry_Community235 R7 2700/1060 6GB/32 GB DDR4 1h ago

Haha, "your" computer, lol. You gonna have to rent a device that connects you to your subscription-based PC-as-a-service cloud.

12

u/tetsuzankou 5h ago

i feel bad for fellow 3rd worlders that went to Europe seeking 1st QoL only to see the EU speedrun turning Europe into the same shithole they left. Ironically you might be better off living in the middle east.

3

u/ChefCurryYumYum 1h ago

It appears to be true no matter which democracy you are in, the more they say something is to protect children the more it is stripping your rights away.

1

u/Pocok5 Ryzen 7 5800X3D - AMD RX9070XT - 32GB DDR4-2933 1h ago

Gotta protect the kids from competition, you see.

Why is west society willing to end democracy so easily, I mean it was never this bad lobbied to be pushing forward 10-15 years ago so why are all the governments being EU, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA and others acting within such a short time frame to get these legal hot potatoes passed knowing it to upset public rights of the individual and consumer which is a part of what west democracies used to protect?

u/Tkaud Ryzen 9 5900x, RTX 3070 51m ago

Politicians will take 0 regard for what the citizen has to say and their pockets will be filled by the dirty money just like the original movement ugh

Why does this matter? The EU is full of ethical, human rights loving, college educated, compassionate, privacy loving politicians. Who cares if a bill comes up? They'll just reject it.

1

u/SirHomoLiberus 3m ago

Sarcasm? Lol

You think this is bad?

Wait and see what these guys gonna do if they get their way with federalization of the EU.

0

u/Druidgr-93 1h ago

After what happened to SKG I'm done. I'm disappointed and honestly when reddit will ask for ID I'll just stop log in.

-29

u/Octoclops8 6h ago

I don't necessarily think we should put game companies on the hook for maintaining their servers after 10 years of the game being launched. However I do think after 5 - 8 years they should not be able to sue anyone for setting up a private server. And by 10 they no longer need to host official ones.

26

u/AtomicTEM 6h ago

Nobody is asking that.
We are asking that now on, new games should have a End of Life plan, make it clear to the cosumer how long they plan to support the game.

2

u/Octoclops8 5h ago

That makes sense.

6

u/Garr_Incorporated 5h ago

I believe one of the asks is to give the ability to make the game playable after the support for it has ended. Say, an online game would be able to set up community servers (with the provided tools to make it natively possible), or by removing features that need constant upkeep while keeping the rest active.

1

u/Sorry_Community235 R7 2700/1060 6GB/32 GB DDR4 1h ago

wrong initiative. this is about online age verification...

-13

u/kmate1357 4h ago

Unpopular opninion: The romanticized anonym internet concept is not good thing actually. There are contents that HAVE TO BE age limited, and there are a lot of cases where people abuse the anonimity, not to mention actual countries (e.g.: russian propaganda).
