While one of them recently closed (I wonder why) my hometown (hint the hometown of Timmies) had a Drive-thru Timmies, 150 m to the west was a Timmies in a gas station, 400 - 500m to the south was a full-blown Timmies, and 200 m east of that was another drive-thru Timmies.
Also, we have the Tim Hortons museum which is on the site of the original Timmies that they bulldozed to build this one (bastards!) which is the Timmies at which my friends and I loitered as kids for hours on the spinny stools at the counter cuz it was around the corner from us. They actually served non-shitty doughnuts back then (I think it was the cigarette smoke that added to the flavour).

I met Chrétien during a class try in 1996. My class was visiting Parliament and got in trouble for falling asleep in the public gallery. The whole group got ushered to a room where we waited for like 10 minutes. Then the door opened and he called in, booming out “ELLO! I AM CHRÉTIEN!” he shook everyone’s hands, talked with us for 30 minutes, and when he found out we didn’t have a flag in our gym, gave our PE teacher one from his office. (My parent had the photo of that on the fridge for the longest time…long gone now)

I don't know how to explain it exactly, but I feel like Canadians (and I'm sure other countries do too) tend to feel like our leader is just one of us, except they're leading the country? They're not celebrities and they are pretty approachable usually. It's not disinterest exactly but just like "oh yeah that's Mark over there, cool, anyways...".

I feel like the best explanation is showing them. The clip of when Rick Mercer, openly gay comedian in the 90s when being open was unusual, and he went skinny dipping with Bob Rae - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1vm4kvZV_fg (edited to say, skip to about 5:35 for the Butt Scene lol)
Or when the Air Farce people break into the Parliament journalist scrum while in their character, like Marg Delahaunty Warrior Princess (Mary Walsh) and everyone plays along. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BUUeJYgXQig&t=15
(Bonus, they got Jean to do a Shawinigan Handshake instead of an autograph)
It's the same with the security, just show people Rick's visit to the Mint in Ottawa and he keeps trying to take the gold bars - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6iFiH78ltS0
Like, if you've ever seen a serious hockey game, it's obvious we don't fuck about, but that doesn't mean you can't have a bit of fun en route.

So I indirectly know people who worked as Justin Trudeau’s security detail. If something is planned like visiting the Stampede or a place like a factory, the event organizers/owners of the place know in advance and are given protocol by the RCMP, employees will go through security and so will people attending usually. Snipers might be deployed if the venue makes sense for it. The level of security depends on the place, context and how long in advance the visit was planned.
If the PM just decided to make a detour to get a hot dog, his security is very close. If the risk doesn’t make sense they will say so. The fact that he’s sitting with a celebrity means it’s probably planned and that place got checked and all the good stuff.

I know this isn’t the point, but I lowkey love that our prime minister can just go have lunch in a busy fast food restaurant without a whole bunch of pomp and circumstance. No secret service sweeping the place or shutting it down for him. It’s not some photo op to try to push an agenda. Like obviously he has a protection detail, he’s not just there by himself, but I dunno. It’s just two guys having lunch like any other guy. It feels nice to see that the head of our government can do that. It feels quaint. The US could never.
22
u/HotPotatoWJazzHands 25d ago
No lie: I went to a diner in NYC once and a secret service agent asked to search my backpack before I went in. I asked him if Beyoncé was inside. Turns out Bernie Sanders was tucked into a solo table in the corner eating matzo ball soup. It was totally chill and regular feeling inside until he got up to go, and 85% of the patrons, who were actually plainclothes agents, stood up to leave with him. 😂

u/Bufus 27d ago
A big difference between Canada and the United States is that Canadians in general take great exception to someone acting like they are "exceptional". While there is undeniable social and cultural stratification in Canada, we really, really don't like people who acknowledge that, and we expect that our public figures maintain a level of "normalcy" to them. This has the effect of keeping people both humble and accessible, but can have the negative effect of stymying certain things. A bit of "Tall Poppy Syndrome". We're generally more adverse to things like celebrity culture, and tend to not like it when a Canadian celebrity becomes heavily "Americanized" or "Hollywood" as its seen as being sort of distinctly un-Canadian.
It also helps that we don't really have a large, well-defined "political class" in Canada like they do in the States. We don't really go in for lifelong politicians, and are generally more suspicious of people who centre their entire lives around "politics". Undeniably there are people who stay in politics for a long time, but we generally don't cultivate the same sort of long-term "political celebrities" in the vein of Joe Biden, Lindsay Graham, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Mitch McConnell, etc. This creates a culture where politicans are much more viewed as civil servants than "political power players".

Carney, for someone with a lot of money and obviously part of the elites, is especially good at being a normal guy. My dad worked 30 years at the bank of Canada - not a high up job or anything and he played hockey with Carney while he was governor. Even came to my dad's retirement party.
Years later, when he was just a regular guy and not a governer of a national bank, we saw him at the end of the Ottawa marathon. Still remembered my dad by name and asked how things were.

Canada is also a polite society. I bet lots of people there would like to talk to him but most of us have the voice in our head telling us that it would be rude and that we shouldn't bother him.
I loosely remember an old radio interview (I think it was Alice Cooper in the early 90's) with an American musician talking about how much he loves Halifax because he can walk the streets like he wasn't famous. People would recognize him and just smile and wave/nod their head. Nobody mobbed him.

I think this is why so many celebrities don’t mind/ are happy to spend their downtime in Canada. For the most part the average person doesn’t really care & if they do, the reaction isn’t the same… Usually just a quiet acknowledgement.

He's Canadian but I saw Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) chilling at a bar in Canmore once. At first I was only like 90% sure it was him. He was sitting at the bartop so when I went to refresh my tables' pints I ended up standing next to him. Got the drinks and after hearing him talking to the person next to him was now 99% sure it was him so I was like "Hey, sorry to interrupt but are you Kim Coates?" and he was like "Yeah, that's me." and I said "Cool, I liked Sons of Anarchy, great work. Cheers." and clinked glasses and went on my way.
I've met other celebs too but yeah the expectation I think is that you're just another person so act like one. I know I've gotten turned off whenever I have met someone famous or semi-famous and they act like it's a big deal and they're too good to hang out and chat with us plebs, but I also don't necessarily want to chat with you just cause you're famous.

Nah, they don't need the Avengers. America doesn't have any weapons left for homeland defense.

Can I just say, as a Brit, Carney is probably my most admired world leader in a long time.
I remember when it was announced he was going to be our BoE chair and I thought 'WTF?', but the more I saw of his words and actions the more I respected him, especially after we fumbled Brexit.
Then he became your PM, made some amazing speeches, pivoted an economy and stood up to Trump and I can't help thinking how great the world would be if we had more leaders like him.
Kudos.

Absolutely
I’ve never voted for a Liberal candidate but these days the person is more important than the party.
And that person (Carney) is pulling the right levers at the right time.
Anyone or anybot that says otherwise is partisan. We have the right man representing Canada when we need it the most. Perhaps ever, we’ll see

I've always said it's the person not the party. You can have very conservative liberals and very progressive conservatives. Politics is on a line afterall.

Been to the Persian Man many times, it’s an institution in Thunder Bay, the pink frosting donuts are sold absolutely everywhere in town.

Important also to note that it's a fried cinnamon bun. Most cinnamon buns are baked.

Also a lot of us are starting to recognize the internationally owned slop that Timmies has become. Its far less popular/cultural than it used to be.

Most Canadian photo ever taken

There's also a photo of them together in front of the Terry Fox statue (also in Thunder Bay) and I think that's the most Canadian photo ever taken.

This could be the most Canadian headline ever.
It could only be topped if Rush were also playing live in the background.

Years ago, while waiting at a red light in Mississauga, a tiny subcompact pulled up beside me. What caught my eye was the vanity plate: MAYOR 1. I leaned over and looked inside. There she was—our legendary, fiercely sharp, nonagenarian mayor, Hazel McCallion. She was hunched slightly over the wheel of what looked straight out of Mr. Bean, completely alone, with no motorcade, no armed security detail, just patiently waiting for the light to change like everyone else. Coming from a country where even minor public officials travel with aggressive sirens, tinted SUVs, and armed bodyguards, the sight floored me. "Hurricane Hazel" held immense political sway for decades, yet there she was, stuck in rush hour beside ordinary commuters in a little runabout. It was one of my earliest realizations of what grounded civic leadership looks like—and a reminder of why I fell in love with Canada.

Visited Canada this past summer and want to say how chill and down to earth Canadians are. They’re like Norwegians but English and French speaking .

Those wondering what they are eating, it’s called a Persian, a Thunder Bay delicacy

Bryan Adam’s is great, my mom knew him when he was starting out and said he was a really nice guy.
I know he’s a vocal supporter of Palestine, hope he brought that up with Carney.
