And don't you dare show up late; a convicted pedophile and rapist can be president, but a loafer(it really was an unexpected problem) doesn't deserve food or healthcare.

He is one of the best examples of why the US is completely fucked. The idea that the person chosen to represent their state’s residents, debate bills and provide oversight to the executive branch can barely speak or answer questions is beyond ludicrous.

This country is so fucking depressing. Hell, the whole world is going to shit because a few wealthy assholes. Far-right groups all over the world are starting to see a resurgence. I was really hoping my children wouldn't have to live through this shit, but here we are. I have to wake up every day, unemployed, on the verge of losing everything with no real recourse.

It's such a sign of how far gone people are that they seriously make those claims today. 9-10 years ago, I didn't believe it but I could, theoretically, see why others might. But we have so, so, so many examples of him saying X, and then doing the polar opposite, that the only way you can deny it is to deny reality itself. Which is what they have done.

This is how I’ve felt every day since the pandemic, at least when 9/11 happened we all went home early.

It’s becoming increasingly hard to understand what the point is, working 40 hours a week to be my landlord’s primary source of income, to work hard and live a life that sucks in comparison to people who are simply hot on tv or online. The death of the middle class is such a motivation killer.

I just want a small house and a decent holiday every summer, enough money that bills aren’t stressful, and enough set aside to take my wife out at the end of the week, but instead we’ve decided that some people should just work forever and barely have anything and other people should barely do anything and get to live in permanent vacation mode.

330

u/goteed 14d ago

This right here is the problem. I'm an old guy, I just turned 60. I busted my ass for years, was able to buy a house and live a decent life. And I did that on a middle class income along with my wife. But honestly I was probably the last generation to do that.

My son is a millennial along with his wife. They both have decent jobs, she has a masters degree. And if it wasn't for us helping out, they wouldn't have shit. They graduated high school into a world of bankers crashing the whole fucking thing in 2008. They finally got back on their feet only to have COVID kick their ass. And while the bakers got bail outs and CEO's got bonuses they got stagnant wages and increasing cost of living.

You'll hear people my age bitch that "These young people don't want to work!!" I say fuck that, what do they have to work for? The deal that was made with me by the capitalists no longer exist for the youth. Theirs no chance at home ownership. The ones that went to college are strapped with a house payment worth of debt because of astronomical tuition cost, and now they're staring down the barrel of AI replacing them anyways.

They're not lazy, they just don't give a fuck. And they have every reason to have that attitude.

It should be noted that previous attempts at full blown authoritarianism didn't have armed AI controlled robots to subjugate the masses. We always assumed Skynet would be controlling the machines that fight against humanity. Nope. Just other asshole humans.

7

u/goteed 13d ago

This really is the scary part. In the last gilded age the bastards still needed the workers labor to fill their pockets. The workers had leverage because of that. But if they replace our labor with AI and robotics, we’re truly cooked!!!

u/aliquotoculos America 14d ago

Nah, I give a fuck.

I'm just also stuck in perpetual severe burnout, to the degree where I entertain not existing anymore on a nearly daily basis because the idea of getting rest now looks like its only possible after death. My body hurts, my back hurts, I can't seem to find doctors that care because I guess I'm 'too young.' Every waking hour that I have is dedicated to working, learning, cooking, cleaning, then finally sleeping. If I take on a hobby to do in my miniscule amount of free time, everyone asks me how I'm going to monetize it -- even myself, these days. Everyone, everyone, wants more from me. More money, more sweat, more thinking, more learning, more of my information, more of my attention. Sell me a half broken product and a subscription model to fix it.

Everything that I can't afford to buy anymore is another task I have to do myself. Every time things start to look up, the rug gets pulled out from under my feet. Every. Single. Time. And every time, the fall gets harder and harder. I don't have family. I don't have that safety net. Most of them are dead and the rest are awful human beings who also don't have shit to their names.

Meanwhile I am still desperately wondering where the hell community went, how the hell I am supposed to talk to neighbors that have no interest in it or are downright hostile. No clubs, no groups, no spaces left to just genuinely 'find your people' and get a break. No one wants to talk about shallow BS but no one wants to talk about bigger BS either. I put every single fuck I can muster into every damn day but nothing pays back the dividends.

18

u/SpleenBender Illinois 14d ago

I'm tired of this shit, too. WTAF IS GOING ON. No neighborly neighbors here either!

A big factor is "Mean World Syndrome" where mass media has made Americans believe that the world is way more dangerous and crime riddled than it really is.

Also people are so strapped for resources now, people feel like they're in survival mode so they get greedy and isolate. Remember COVID when everybody was fighting for necessities like toilet paper? The supply shortages never really ended.

Thank you! It's impossible to get ahead. My husband has a VERY good job. If I put his base salary on paper most people would tell me to go kick rocks. But we are constantly getting slammed with monumental events that keep pushing us down. Plus the increase in cost of life and insurance ripping everyone off. I had my first kid and with amazing health insurance and a natural birth is cost us $5k. 3 years later when our second came it was the exact same scenario except I only stayed one night this time and we were slapped with a $22k bill. It feels like everyone is trying to keep the middle class from getting any gain. Working 70hours a week just to scrape by is insane. We travel a lot (part of my job and grandparents are generous). The work life balance is so much better almost everywhere we go outside of the country. The food is better quality too and people are healthier. What are we doing here?

9

u/jimlahey420 13d ago

I've stopped having this conversation with my parents because it just ends in shouting. So many older Gen X and boomers just refuse to believe that things aren't worse for their kids. They're pretty liberal but still view America as this infallible thing that will always somehow continue being great despite obvious evidence to the contrary.

I'm an elder millennial who grew up in a house where only my dad worked full time and we were able to live the upper middle class American dream with all the fixings. Meanwhile my wife and I struggle to even do half of what I had as a kid on two full-time salaries that are more than double the take-home my parents had on a single income.

The "American Dream" woke up in a cold sweat a long time ago.

34

u/Kind_Following_5220 14d ago

One of my economics professor back in the late 90s said that the power would swing so far that their would be a time where the people rose up. He predicted a French style revolution. You can see it starting with the pushback on data centers and health insurers. We'll see if they can get enough flock cameras, drones, and robot death machines up and running first. It may be too late already.

And Adam Smith wrote, before Marx, about how landlords love to leech off the labor of others

It's almost like knowledge builds on itself or something, in addition to the knowledge and language necessary to describe and analyze capitalism and its effects on society can only happen as it develops.

I have theorized for years that there is an intentionally struck balance at play. If too many people slip too far below the line where we feel we may be able make it one day, there will be problems. It’s like that Geico commercial where the guy has a dollar on the end of a fishing pole and he’s taunting “oh you almost got it”.

COVID era BLM protests are a great example. A lot of the turnout was the confluence of a lot of pissed off people who also had time on their hands.

They keep us (the working class broadly speaking) right on the edge of being stable & comfortable. Honey don’t fuck up now, we’re so close to making it! But that has been sliding more and more each year. I think we are getting closer to that balance finally skewing enough for people en masse to say “you know what, fuck this.”

I’m not throwing Molotov cocktails right because I’ve worked too damn hard to throw away the little success I’ve carved out but ask me again when/if that success is taken from me.

44

u/CategoryZestyclose91 14d ago

Historically, when a society reaches a point where the wealth inequality is so high, and the lower class is so oppressed, revolution occurs.

There is a very distinct tipping point. We are rapidly approaching it.

These revolutions never work out for the ruling class.

27

u/Sure-Distance-7434 14d ago

It often doesn't work out for working class either, see: Russia.

Yup. And we are just the spear tip. It’s coming for Europe too. The era of western democracy is coming to an end that basically started with 9/11 permanently rattling the U.S., unchecked capitalism and social media reprogramming human brains that the feudal lords are the good guys

63

u/SuperSilverback 14d ago

It started before 9/11. Nixon tied our health coverage to employment. Reagan gave us tax cuts for the wealthy with the promise it would trickle down. Every Republican administration after did the same thing creating more and more wealth inequality and huge budget deficits. The middle class has been on the chopping block for decades, it's just taken time for the impact to come into focus. There is a class war and we're losing.

Hurricane Katrina was a multifaceted failure and a terrible hurricane. The immediate impact of the event was devastating.

Not even addressing the existing systemic inequities that added to the situation, the response was political and racial. The amount of unnecessary deaths, displacement, and (what most only seems to care about when it’s the right people) human trafficking that was a direct consequence of the inept response to this disaster is something we clearly haven’t learned from.

Starkly we’re in the same situation as 2005. FEMA is gutted because of war and political will comes with a price tag. The worst part about now is that the political gain is a weapon now. Who is going to die without FEMA aid in the event of a natural disaster?

You don't understand how conservatives think. They are not motivated by having a government that wants to help them. They are motivated by having a government that hurts the people they want to hurt.

268

u/LogensTenthFinger 14d ago edited 14d ago

I'll never understand why the left doesn't get this. Maybe it's because I actually used to be a conservative and moved in these circles, but the left seems willfully blind to how much conservatives hate them.

Leftist thinking as they talk to a conservative: "Gosh how can I make them understand this policy is mutually beneficial. They'll get healthcare and pay less money, it seems so obvious! Maybe they're just anxious about change, but they should see our healthcare system is already failing them. Maybe I need to appeal more to their Christian faith, helping others is a core tenet of what Jesus taught."

The thoughts of the Conservative they're talking to: "I want to kill you. I want to kill you. I want to kill you. I want to kill you. I want to kill you. I want to kill you. I want to kill you."

They treated Kyle Rittenhouse like a conquering war hero because he shot people they didn't like politically. They were celebrating him before they even knew his name because he shot BLM protestors. They openly pass laws about running e people over who are protesting. WTF does everyone think that is about?

They literally shouted to shoot Democrats at CPAC to cheers and laughter. Wake up

132

u/Bendo410 14d ago

The saddest part of it is, conservatives within a family can hate their own liberal family members when the liberal ones just want a better life for all.

u/TRexAstronaut 14d ago

I clawed my way out. I was so ill for so long that I had no friends that lived near me, so I very slowly and deliberately crawled through broken glass to safety. Got an apartment. Lived off of credit cards. Thankfully my mother passed quickly after she abandoned me so I had life insurance to live off of while I went through the ordeal of getting a correct diagnosis and life saving surgery.  I'm okay now but it's been years of mental and physical therapy to get me to a place where I feel peace and I'm not in bone breaking pain the majority of the time. I don't speak with my family. They still cast me as a hypocondriac and liar to anyone who will listen. I would have died if I didnt become my own hero. I had to have three major surgeries.  I hope you find your way to people who care for you in the same way you care for them.

Same , I speak from experience, and my horrible narcissistic conservative father has only gotten worse since my mother’s passing in July.

He made it sound like I abandoned my mother in her obituary, despite a year and a half ago my father threatened to shoot me and my wife (fiancé at the time) because of our feelings on the dumbest man in America. He separated her from so much of her own family in her last year, and now he’s still talking shit on social media so much I had to get an order of no contact that a judge granted just from seeing those two incidents. It does get better , but it’s hell getting there

35

u/theVoidWatches Pennsylvania 14d ago

A lot of people - across the entire political spectrum - have trouble conceptualizing that people might not reason in approximately the same ways as them. They can understand that someone might make a different decision due to being in a different situation or having different information, but they assume that they're the median person and pretty much everyone would be like them, given the same circumstances.

So, this is where you get progressives who think they if we can just get conservatives to see the merits of progressive ideas, they'll happen; liberals who think that if they reach out, they can compromise; conservatives who lie and cheat and think the other side is doing all the same things and just better at hiding it...

It's an issue I have too, if I'm being honest with myself.

30

u/timoumd 14d ago

Shit.  You are right.  I wish you weren't, but fuck

48

u/Blugreysky 14d ago

They don't respect collaboration, they respect authority. As soon as you say, "How do you feel about this," you've lost them. They aren't dumb, they know education and healthcare are good for them, but it matters to them that you follow the "chain of command," not some mamby pamby sharing circle.

16

u/Vyzantinist 13d ago

They don't respect collaboration, they respect authority.

This is, in part, why conservatives are so vehemently opposed to international cooperation and multinational organizations like the UN and NATO.

In conservative world might makes right. They project on to the nation, in terms of international relations, how they view the ideal life for themselves - the US should be able to act as it pleases without consequence or consideration for others. We are the 'strongest', after all, so we should get to do whatever we want. We don't need consideration for other countries because consideration is for the weak.

Conservatives don't want cooperation and alliances because that implies parity of a kind. Instead they want vassals, and the freedumb to bully other countries until they submit to our demands.

29

u/CrippleSlap Canada 14d ago

the left seems willfully blind to how much conservatives hate them.

Why are Conservatives so hateful in the first place?

30

u/Jack__Squat 14d ago

They are indoctrinated to believe liberals are their enemy. Liberals are trying to take their freedom, their guns, their land, their money, etc. They are taught to be outraged and hateful and shielded from any sort of critical thinking that might lead them to believe otherwise. It's why conservatives hate education.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Leucastic_Leopard 14d ago

Because they don't like it when someone disrupts the "pecking order", which has them on top and everyone else beneath them

15

u/Vyzantinist 13d ago

Yes, the conservative worldview is fundamentally hierarchical. There must always be a ruling class of elites who deserve their wealth, status, and privilege; there must always be an underclass who deserve nothing but poverty wages, misery, and suffering. Conservatives see themselves comfortably between the two. Despite how often you hear the "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" line thrown around, it's more important for conservatives to feel like they are above someone else, rather than that they can ascend the social ladder themselves. It's easier for them to look down on someone than to put the work in to climb the ladder of their hierarchy.

That is, in part, why conservatives are inherently opposed to equality and equity - those challenge their beloved hierarchy and, more importantly, make them feel less certain about being above the people they hate.

13

u/Inuyaki Europe 14d ago

I'll never understand why the left doesn't get this.

Because if you have empathy yourself, it is really hard to imagine people without any empathy at all. Even if I tried, I could never imagine how those people think.

41

u/JWTS6 14d ago

Way too many leftists still think we can promise universal healthcare our way out of this, it's such a fundamental misunderstanding of what motivates MAGA voters

22

u/rufud 14d ago

It’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what motivates young voters as well. Every dem nominee has promised to unleash the young voters since rock the vote on mtv but have barely moved the needle including Bernie/AOC. Obama came the closest but still young voters just do not care about healthcare even though they should. Because young people use healthcare the least and are most likely to be under their parents plan until 26 anyways. If you had to pick issues that young people actually respond to you are better off using gun violence and the environment but even then good luck because young people don’t care about voting

Because a lot of liberals, whether through naivete or personal ethics, don't want to write off conservatives and see them as beyond helping. They think that with just one more persuasive argument or just one more piece of evidence conservatives can be reasoned with and made to see sense.

In a different context, it could be seen as admirable that such liberals are generally willing to give the worst people the benefit of the doubt, but this doesn't work with MAGA. They are a tribalistic death cult obsessed with power and dominance, who contemptuously mock liberals' willingness to "play fair" and by the rules while they themselves have no intention of doing so if it means they 'win'.

Ironically, perhaps, this might be the closest thing to the "suicidal empathy" conservatives sneeringly accuse liberals of having when the discussion comes to treating outgroups like actual human beings.

The white terrorists who killed Emmett Till, or who flooded black towns, or who killed so many in the zoot suit riots, or who genocided the native Americans never faced justice for their crimes against humanity.

Nothing happened to the cops that beat Rodney King. I guess it's a bit better with Derek Chauvin and Sean Grayson facing real justice, but it's not even close to enough to bring any serious change.

The idiot doesn't care about North Carolina.

658

u/pconrad0 14d ago

He only cares about: * Staying out of jail * Increasing his personal wealth and power * Taking revenge on his perceived enemies

Everything he says and does fits into one or more of these three very specific categories.

"Preserving, protecting and defending" the Constitution, "faithfully executing the laws", never enters into it.

"Make America Great Again" has always had the understood fine print of "for Donald Trump, and to hell with the rest of you people".

13

u/tetanusmaster 14d ago

And he barely works on the vanity projects, too. All of them are a disaster. The WH is still partially torn down, the reflecting pool is still fucked up, the Kennedy Center is probably getting torn down, the arch hasn't started construction but it'll be right in the path of air traffic to the nearby airport once it's built, etc.

1) Be arguably one of the most powerful people in the world, people bend over backwards to execute whatever you want to see happen, you make billions of dollars taking naps, having people praise you, and going golfing.

2) You go to jail for the rest of your life.

22

u/canadiuman 14d ago

If he resigned today, there's no way he'd be in jail before he dies. It's his supervillain power - getting away with everything.

18

u/Stereo_Jungle_Child 14d ago

It's his supervillain power - getting away with everything.

That's exactly right.

Trump's been doing this his entire life. He does whatever he wants and then dares people to try to stop him, then sues the shit out of everyone for everything if they actually try to. This tactic actually works if you have enough money to pull it off.

I grew up in the back woods of PA, in a small farming community. I used to go back every year and spend big just to support the big community fairs and moneymakers to bring a little cash to the community.

Over the past decade I've stopped going yearly, and more recently, going at all.

Everything is like some weird bizarro world version of itself. Everything is completely warped by hate and propaganda. Visiting gives me this horrible sense of anxiety and "wrong"-ness that I can't fully explain. People who used to be warm and welcoming are cold, callous, hateful bigots. Everything is the same, everything is completely different. The best I can use is an old folk term called "widdershins" which technically means going counterclockwise or going against the natural order, but also has a folk meaning associated with how you got to the other world where everything would feel wrong and ominous. It feels like that other world. Everything feels wrong. Everything feels hateful and evil.

72

u/SpezDrinksHorseCum 14d ago

But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.

And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying ‘Jewish swine,’ collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in—your nation, your people—is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed. Now you live in a system which rules without responsibility even to God. The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way.”

Regardless of which side you are on Trump is the only President who has denied disaster relief for political reasons. That alone should disqualify him from office and while a red state might think they are safe there are plenty of examples of him being petty with his supporters.

A city in North Carolina denying a data center from being built would be enough for him to deny hurricane relief to the whole state. This is a guy who would rather tear down the Kennedy Center just because his name can’t be on the side of it.

Vote blue in November, it’s the only way to get this country back on track. If everything Trump has done to date isn’t enough, which the GOP has willingly allowed and enabled; then the current gas prices and diesel prices along with shortages should be your tipping point. What we are seeing at the pump is 100% the result of actions by Trump and was entirely preventable.

The more we remain in this tenure of the administration, the more tests Americans are provided.

So far, the answers have been startling.
