Is this the Senator McConnell, and dear friend, that Scott Jennings had a fruitful 20 minute conversation with?

313

u/expedience 8d ago

Those buttons they teach dogs to use to say things like food, outside, walk, no to paid sick leave, tax cuts for billionaires.

Standard stuff.

You know those iPad they have for non verbal kids that translate pictures into sentences for caregivers? I imagine thats what Scot Jennings "talked" to.  Of course back in my day when I had surgery and was intubated, they gave me a magnadoodle to communicate with.

I'm still shocked that he wasn't dead while they hid him away. Though this is basically the nearest thing, besides being fully comatose.

All of the senators and pundits (such as Scott Jennings) who lied about "talking to Mitch for 20 minutes" a few months ago should never be believed again. It should be brought up every time they're interviewed, or if they have to testify under oath for some reason.

1.6k

u/starliteburnsbrite 8d ago

Yeah, I can't believe they haven't been pilloried by the media. Where are the columns on the gaslighting Republicans lying through their teeth?

816

u/edgarecayce 8d ago

The media doesn’t pillory these people any more. They just parrot their bullshit and then talk about minutia. No one ever gets called out.

225

u/edgarecayce 8d ago

The News where people did real reporting and asked hard questions to people in power is mostly history.

Now we have multiple channels and 24 hour streaming of “news” but it’s mostly pundits bloviating about what they think of the news, and guests choosing to come on and talk about just what they want to talk about, or have somewhat fake discussions about it.

Everyone gets to hear what they want to hear and the fire hydrant of bullshit from the people in power goes mostly unchallenged.

111

u/i_give_you_gum 7d ago

Reagan removed the Fairness Doctrine, and thus our slide into the present day media landscape began.

31

u/Zahgi I voted 7d ago

The actual issue was allowing corporations to consolidate their ownership of the networks. That allowed the corporations to turn sources of news into outrage farming tabloid corporate clickbait.

As soon as that happened, predicted by myself and others, these tabloids became all about fearmonger for profits instead of being a watchdog on corporate corruption and political power.

The rest of the free world does not have this problem because their news networks are not farming ratings for cash. They are still about informing the people. As such they employ journalists, editors, and lawyers to make sure they aren't lying to the citizenry.

The USA's infotainment outlets are manned by failed actors/actresses who can't even write and justify lying because they are "performing" not informing.

Not sure where you have been for the last uh 50 years, but this is what Republicans do. They lie, cheat, and steal from their base, and they keep voting R. Because omg it would just be so much worse if a D were in. They could NEVER vote for a D. Rather watch their own children be killed by ICE than vote D.

17

u/DadJokeBadJoke California 8d ago

Yep, and their representatives know that they won't lose their votes so any pushback is just an idle threat

honestly, I kind of figured he wasn't dead, just not in good condition. Hiding an actual death would be way harder, and the consequences way more severe. Whereas something like this is much easier to excuse, and it's easier to lie about the progression of illness timeline than time of death

136

u/phyneas American Expat 8d ago

Yeah, once he ended up in an ambulance, hiding his death would mean convincing multiple highly-paid people who don't work for you to commit serious career-ending crimes on your behalf, whereas hiding a serious incapacitating illness is as simple as, well, exactly what they did (and are continuing to do).

60

u/Axin_Saxon 8d ago

Yeah no doctor is going to risk their medical license to cover up a death like that and not report it to the coroner or other relevant local authorities.

I knew he was vegetative at very least. I just figured he would be in a coma and they’d pull the plug mid-August after the special election deadline passed.

I actually wish it was Trump. McConnell is good, but Trump as a voiceless shell would be better.

53

u/grundee 8d ago

Trump wouldn't understand that what is happening is his own fault. McConnell knows the only reason he is there is because they cannot give up his seat or his vote. He would have ordered this exact thing to happen to anyone else in his party.

I rest easy knowing that this man is going all the way to his grave being the exact same pos he’s been the entire time. I have no sympathy for him because I believe he wouldn’t have it any other way. People are claiming it’s elder abuse, but they’re ignoring that this man’s life mission has been to further the Republican cause to the fullest extent he possibly can. He has been a terrible public servant who has shamelessly tarnished the instruments of democracy. He will literally go down dying doing what he loved. I do not for one moment doubt that he is relishing every moment of this, with nothing better to do.

124

u/OneHelluvaUsername 8d ago

After Bork’s nomination to SCOTUS tanked, McConnell made it his personal mission to reshape the Court in his image.

He succeeded.

Idgaf if he is being abused. He’s abused us all.

38

u/Teyanis 7d ago

Turtle spent decades carefully honing the republican party to be his perfect ideal, and Trump smashed it to bits in 2 years and usurped the entire thing. Mitch's entire life's work was being burnt to the ground, and in the meantime his health took a sharp decline to the point that he couldn't rally a defense against Trump. He now spends the end of his life and career as a puppet for his own staff.

Now he's a victim of clear abuse and a prisoner in his own ruined brain, but nobody will lift a finger to help him. Karma really is a bitch. Believe in god or not, you can't escape once he comes for you.

Mitch and Johnson and whoever else senior party leader on the Right would be crucifying the Left if they did the same. Ramping up pressure on the daily with their minions on every network beating the same drum along party lines, until the public outcry and corpo money speaks out loud and clear. That said, there is the ship of Theseus (mind of Theseus?) aspect to consider.

If the current Mitch is so deteriorated because of his stroke(s) that he's for all intents and purposes a different person, does he still deserve to suffer for the actions of past Mitch?

(There is a famous case of this with a death row inmate that suffered severe brain damage and did not remember at all the crimes he committed and behaved completely differently, effectively becoming a "new" person.)

27

u/ThatLooksRight 8d ago

There was a Star Trek The Next Generation episode that had a similar premise. A man that had committed a bunch of crimes had his brain altered by some nanobots or something, and he became aware and regretful that he committed actual crimes. 57

u/NorthTempleStreet 8d ago

I wish he called this out more, because both are/were horrible.

Things don't get better because we fail to call out our own. Just the political opponent. And I fear a lot of us on this comment section have forgotten about her and how awful that also was.

Feinstein was a better person than McConnell, but both ends-of-life were wrong.

60

u/cerevant California 8d ago

To be fair, there were a number of Democrats who were trying to talk her into stepping down, but she was coherent and stubborn enough to want to stay. Where they failed was not unseating her.

14

u/WestCoastBestCoast01 8d ago

It really pissed me off that other californians voted her back in when she was so elderly.

12

u/Lane-Kiffin 8d ago

The only time where she was legitimately vulnerable was against Kevin de Leon in 2018. He actually came close (and I voted for him too) which is not common at all for such a tenured heavyweight incumbent. But most apathetic voters prefer certainty, and Kevin de Leon had no real platform, no energy (he didn’t have a charismatic following like Mamdani or Bernie Sanders) and the whole world found out a few years later that he was kind of a piece of shit the whole time.

In 2006 and 2012 there was pretty much no opposition.

Fuck him. He just got a 3 month vacation (medical leave) while repeatably voting against it for the rest of us

This is so much less bad than what he deserves.

At what point is this just blatant elder abuse? I mean he’s a piece of shit but still. Clearly past the point of elder abuse

> “Do you want to be at work, sir? Would you rather be home?” Townsend asked, but still McConnell did not reply. As the car door slowly closed, McConnell held up a peace sign.

Uhh… what if he meant “option 2”???

RN here. I bet the ICU cocktail he's on is straight up bananas.

Any ICU RNs have any ideas? I'm a hospice RN, so I'm definitely... here watching with my jaw on the ground lol.

I'm no fan of him, but isn't this whole situation basically elder abuse?

82

u/WiglyWorm Ohio 8d ago

Elder abuse is rampant in government. He's far from the first octogenarian multiple time stroke sufferer to be trotted out before the people.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/dodgertodger 8d ago

Absolutely. If he has aphasia, is non-verbal and appears to be immobile, they're using him as a proxy to vote on matters he cannot decide on.

24

u/pontiacfirebird92 Mississippi 8d ago

I mean there's video of an aide showing him how to vote and what to vote on. There's clear evidence he's being used as a proxy.

It's just that Republicans are so corrupt that nobody is going to do anything about it. And Democrats, I'm not sure what the fuck they're waiting on here. Fucking do something about it.

I don’t like this version of Weekend at Bernie’s. It’s just sad. You can tell the GOP doesn’t give a damn about morality, because if they did, they would have let Mitch McConnell retire instead of pulling this deplorable shit.

I mean, he was already about to resign.

13

u/PlainBread 8d ago

This is generationally embarrassing. The rot in our system, on full display: Power over people at any cost.

Yet, some of the Republican members of Congress report having 20 minute conversations with Mitch. They lie as much as their hero Trump.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/FoxyInTheSnow Canada 8d ago

I wonder what side of the "I'm glad he's dead" conundrum he'll fall on.

When trump said he was glad Rob and Michelle Reiner and Robert Mueller died, conservatives LOLd and moved on. When people said they were glad Kirk Cameron Charlie Kirk (I still have it stuck in my head that they're the same rotten person) died, they got fired.

14

u/PlutoJones42 8d ago

Hey are dragging a vegetable around the senate floor and holding his hand up to vote. The entire Republican Party should be charged with elder abuse

30

u/ProfessionalBake6607 8d ago

I will never forgive McConnell for failing to impeach trump, but at the same time, the human in me hates to see anyone suffering like that, and unable to speak or function. It’s absolutely unconscionable to me that those pricks dragged him out to cast a vote. The headline should read: Republicans are so desperate to hold onto power that they’re forcing a dying man to do their bidding. Utter cruelty.

15

u/jspurlin03 Texas 8d ago

It’s possible to believe two things at once — it’s true that McConnell is a ghoulish human who has done a ton of damage. It’s also true that it’s difficult to see a person in genuine difficult circumstances due to aging and medical issues.

McConnell had multiple opportunities to cede power and step down. He could have done that ten years ago and been relaxing in his retirement.

He chose… differently.

Everyone on both sides of the poor man is the victim of elder abuse and he deserves it because he's the elder that abused us are all right and I'm all for the discussion. He both deserves it and it's also obscene and incredibly fucked up

He may be one of, if not the most, vile human beings but even I think they should just let him go away and die with some dignity. He has no idea where he is, what he's doing, or really anything at all. I'd be surprised if his brain is more than a pile of mashed potatoes at this point. I think we should probably charge the heads of the GOP with elder abuse because this is so wrong.

This is insane the guy clearly suffered a stroke. And if we want to actually be descent people, he should be allowed to retire and focus on his health. But no the political system at work is a complete fucking clown show and is enacting Weekend at Bernie's in the Senate.
