meme/funny Sophie really had to do that. She’s trolling A’ja over the whole incident. Game 3 is gonna have some extra drama for sure.

This is the peak of WNBA entertainment btw

Usually I don’t like drama, just play, but down for this

Women not beating the allegations that no one will watch unless they're fighting or stripping

7

u/albertoroa 17h ago

It's called the hockey curse. No sports league is allowed to be more popular than the NHL unless they're fighting or stripping.

I personally think her and a couple others were approached and maybe incentivized to create drama between the players to increase viewership.

u/VegetableTour6790 19h ago

I personally just think she is smart enough to seize the moment after "The Pointing"

Yes. All sports is reality tv. All of it. Men, women, the dog show. Kentucky derby. It’s just The bachelor for men (and women), but you get it.

And the camo with the drink, a reference to that tall lady who got in there for some reason?

2

I wonder if Aja was involved in the tumble/foul with anybody EXCEPT for Sophie, if the same huge reaction would have occurred?

Remember Fever fans: Point at those who don't want you to point at them.

96

u/BetterCranberry7602 20h ago

I never realized pointing at people makes them this angry

20

u/DragDeezNutsThruGlas 19h ago

Ever chuck a thumbs up instead a middle finger in the car? You couldn't believe how much angrier that makes people

5

u/JoeyBagaDonutxz 18h ago

Dang lol I try to use that to be a nice guy

3

u/ImStupidPhobic 7h ago

It’s a psychological thing. People expects you to be on their exact level in rage and giving them a thumbs up shows how little you care about them and their games. It melts them every single time 😄

It's the ones who have weak minds.

People who were taught “it’s rude to point at others” but internalized it as “pointing at someone is worse than flipping the bird”

33

u/UncreativeUsername84 20h ago

The way she reacted to being pointed at, I thought someone dropped the N-word from the crowd.

30

u/SayRaySF 20h ago

Yeah when I first saw the clip I was like “well what did he say?!” but I’ve heard literally nothing except that he pointed. It’s hard to take any of these people seriously anymore.

If you’re so soft you get pressed over someone pointing at you then you lack self-restraint. God forbid these women have to deal with European fans.

29

u/InTheMorning_Nightss 19h ago

These players are going to get eaten alive with the expansion team in Philly lol

9

u/Secret_Poet6355 19h ago

This is such an underrated comment. At this rate they’re going to need more security to escort people in and out of their seats in Philly

9

u/InTheMorning_Nightss 18h ago

It’s gonna be hilarious because you know Philly fans are gonna show up JUST to heckle for the hell of it.

These over sensitive players just put a huge target on their back instead of leaning into the fun that is a heckling audience.

Obviously there’s a line, but it’s always fun to see when players have fun with the rowdy crowd.

2

u/Secret_Poet6355 17h ago

Exactly, I mean if you get triggered from someone pointing at you… you’ve got a long road ahead lol Philly will eat that up. She says no man steps to me, do you really think he was trying to attack you??? As if there wasn’t 100+ people along with security to stop him before he even got to you.

3

u/InTheMorning_Nightss 17h ago

What’s hilarious is that’s the exact same perspective that cops have to justify overreaction, which we all know is stupid.

But because of the identities at play here, A’Ja is completely right and needs to be protected and the fan is actually a threat.

8

u/LoopyMercutio 19h ago

She’s a bit annoying and all for doing this, BUT you know this will get into A’ja’s head, and it’ll make her lose it on the court, commit fouls against Sophie and others, and make her play with less focus. She’s shown she has trouble keeping her temper in check, so this strategic needling is perfect to make things worse, perfect to make A’ja play worse.

For years, the WNBA went nowhere on basketball alone. It finally figured out that professional sports is not sports per se, it's entertainment. And that includes creating stars with household names, creating tension and conflict, rivalries between teams, rivalries between players, yes even fights, extracurricular drama. All that combined, in addition to skilled basketball, is what grows a popular sport that people pay attention to, and buy tickets for.

Just like any other professional sport, the WNBA will never make it on basketball alone. It's had years to try, and it doesn't work. You need all that other stuff. Then it'll gain traction and grow.

[ed. added the bit about "just like any other..."]

3

u/Content_Geologist420 19h ago

Your not wrong. Nascar became one of the most popluar sports in the late 90s- early 00's from this exact formula. Then fucked it up.

2

u/koreqwzfp 3h ago

We don’t watch the WNBA but my wife finally came around to watching sports when we got into the NWSL. And for sure some of the entertainment for all of us is the drama. Sports, both men’s and women’s, are not unlike classic soap operas or telenovelas. Huge, rotating casts season after season. People suddenly leave mid season due to injury and come back for redemption seasons later. Decades of seasons of lore to be had. Betrayals, heartbreak, and jubilation week to week.

5

u/AntiPantsCampaign 20h ago

Culture Warriors should be the next WNBA team name

5

u/Purple-lighting87 20h ago

I probably wouldn't mind the trolling if scored more than 4 points

3

u/OtherwiseEnd944 19h ago

Be honest you would mind it regardless.

I also don't get the message. If you're not elite at something you have no value as a person so you should shut up? Only the greats deserve to talk?

Something about "What a comeback for the point" and "Who would have thought"

She was referring to her claim to fame, the pointing meme. Relevant here because the best player in the league (Aja Wilson) lost her cool and got a fan kicked out for pointing at her right after she barreled into Sophie and knocked her over. Sophie's team ended up winning the game, so she's gloating.

Kinda funny actually. Particularly because Aja usually has it together, and it was super lame of her to lose her shit to a random fan just for pointing at her, let alone get the guy kicked out of the game for it
