YouTube Doesn't Want You To See The Elon Musk Documentary
https://youtube.com/watch?v=0du-iAN2Wpk&si=GOhhBdF-gNxss0RH274
u/adeepkick 1d ago
Big studios owned by powerful people and Elon Musk himself don’t want you to watch this too. You know why? Because it is clearly trying to paint an entire picture of who he really is as a person, not the fake mythos he’s created for himself as a public figure. And that picture is ugly.
If you don’t like Musk, you should be interested in this or at least want it get to wide coverage and publicity. If Musk is afraid of it, what’s in there that he doesn’t want you to see?
Saying that you don’t wanna see it because you don’t like him is backwards thinking
28
u/npsimons 1d ago
I don't want to see it, because I'm already well aware of how awful he is. I've already learned this lesson.
It's like people sending me news articles about the latest atrocity the Trump administration is doing - it doesn't surprise me, all it does is depress and distract me from changing things I have control over. This is as much about my mental well being as it is about learning, and how I spend those most precious of non-renewable resources, time and attention.
And I'll second u/thx1138inator - books are a far superior medium for learning. I read Woodward's "Fear" during Trump's first term, and that's pretty much set my expectations so I'm no longer shocked by every new thing.

u/adeepkick 1d ago
The problem isn’t that you don’t want to see it. It’s that you’re publicly championing the opinion that it doesn’t have value if you already dislike Musk. Which effectively helps the billionaires who are spending lots of money to attempt to bury it. And when someone you don’t like is trying to bury something, you should immediately be suspicious instead of dismissive.
Also, since you read that person’s comment, I’ll copy part of my reply about books from that one:
“Documentaries are way more digestible for the general public than a thoroughly sourced book. My mom, for example, is a somewhat right-leaning person who would be interested in seeing this and it has the potential to make her rethink her admiration for the wealthy.
What she wouldn’t do is pick up and read to completion an annotated borderline-textbook account of the man’s life.”

u/npsimons 1d ago
It’s that you’re publicly championing the opinion that it doesn’t have value if you already dislike Musk.
You have constructed a strawman. I didn't say that. I said I already know about his awfulness, therefore it is pointless for me to watch the documentary.
Others who are less educated should learn about how awful he is. I am already knowledgeable on the subject, I don't need to take in information I already am aware of.

u/adeepkick 1d ago
The problem becomes you and a whole host of people being very vocal about how you don’t need to watch this if you know enough about Musk. People see that repeated again and again and start to feel the same through osmosis or believe it’s the right opinion to have.
Then the audience for this documentary shrinks.
Thus reducing its cultural impact.
Thus shrinking its reach so the people who should see it and could be potentially be swayed by it don’t ever hear about it or think it’s worth seeing.
Effectively tanking it. Which is what Musk and his billionaire friends are also trying desperately to do to this documentary.
Are you not seeing the correlation here? Your words have impact, even if it’s unintentional.
0
u/BabaBlacksheep86 21h ago
You don’t come across as rather intelligent. You probably should watch the documentary just in case.

Sure… the best way to convince someone to do something is by calling them an idiot.

Watching a Michael Moore documentary sometimes makes me reconsider being a liberal Democrat. It's a terrible medium for learning things. Much better to read a well-researched and annotated book. The medium matters. And here I'll plug Neil Postman's Amusing ourselves to death. Classic.
40
u/adeepkick 1d ago
The point isn’t to give a totally comprehensive account. Documentaries are way more digestible for the general public than a thoroughly sourced book. My mom, for example, is a somewhat right-leaning person who would be interested in seeing this and it has the potential to make her rethink her admiration for the wealthy.
What she wouldn’t do is pick up and read to completion an annotated borderline-textbook account of the man’s life.
Sometimes reach matters as much or more than thoroughness.

Watching a Michael Moore documentary sometimes makes me reconsider being a liberal Democrat.
Y'all really like letting perfect be the enemy of good.
3
1
u/PhabioRants 5h ago
Michael Moore is an enemy of truth. Ironically, he's just leveraging right-winged tactics for centre-left ideologies, which makes him the hero we need, but not the hero we deserve. Frankly, his methods disgust me, but the degree to which the world needs someone to lie to uphold the truth is an irony that paints him as almost prescient if it wasn't so self-serving of him to do so.
I hate that twenty years later, his approach has become a necessary evil; that we've been reduced to fighting propaganda with propaganda because truth and objective reality is meaningless in 2026 is depressing as all hell.
11
u/Helphaer 1d ago
While your first statement isnt relevant to really anything, it should be pointed out people that are typically invested in using facts and education to self inform past corporate news are typically progressive not liberal.
2
u/hitchcockfiend 1d ago
Watching a Michael Moore documentary sometimes makes me reconsider being a liberal Democrat.
If Moore's presentation makes you rethink your views, then you probably didn't hold those views all that strongly in the first place.
And I'm saying that as someone who very much dislikes his work, despite largely being on the same side of the political fence as him. I can explain why, though it's not relevant to this tangent.
Point is, I can see Moore's work and have some pretty strong concerns with how he goes about delivering his message without thinking, "Hmmm, maybe my beliefs aren't what I thought they were."
I can do that because his often questionable approach has no bearing on what I believe, outside of my beliefs about his work specifically.

I wasn't impressed by the trailer. There have been a lot of amazing documentaries. Things such as Knock Down the House(the AOC documentary), Fahrenheit 11/9, and, on the docudrama side, movies like Snowden. All extremely well done. They keep you really engaged. The trailer made it look like this is just a whole collection of people that already know don't like Musk, talking about how much they don't like Musk to an audience of people that already don't like Musk.
I'm still waiting for the final theater scheduling, but so far I haven't even seen many theaters outside of the major cities announce showtimes. If this is a movie that had a lot of actual buzz, then they would not be slow walking it like this. Documentaries typically don't do well, but I really don't think this is going to do that much better. And I'm afraid that everyone is just going to blame it on all this other nonsense. Musk might have bots on this platform, but what's stopping the documentary distributor or other groups that are supporting the documentary from having bots on this platform promoting the movie and criticizing anyone who says anything negative about the movie?
So I'm probably going to end up watching the movie anyway, because I just tend to show up for these kinds of things regardless but im probably not that excited about it.

u/Dat_Harass 1d ago edited 1d ago
Always the first to any given place.
I was about to ask if the people commenting thought this was going to be fellating Elon. They'll find no
billionairetrillionaire support here.Edit: Musk himself described the film as "a hit piece that misses" and claimed that "It's a psy op". NPR reported that one of Musk's lawyers threatened to sue Gibney for defamation over a claim about lasers in the film
13
u/StoniMohoni 1d ago
Oh, it's that type of movie, I thought it would be some boot licking bs and absolutely avoided anything about it so far
Maybe I should watch it...
11
u/porkbrains 1d ago
Check out Gibney's other films, specifically The Dark Money Game, Agents of Chaos (Russian troll farms), Zero Days (Stuxnet), Enron, Out for Blood (Theranos) and Going Clear (Scientology). I know this is a massive list but I figured a few might catch your interest and these are all excellent. Agents of Chaos should be required viewing for every social media user.
His career is primarily built around exposing the intersection of wealth/technology, corruption and power with a few side quests into classic counter culture with HST and Ken Kesey. If you can't tell, I'm a big fan.
9
u/Dat_Harass 1d ago
I don't know exactly what kind of movie this will be, but if he wants less eyes on it I'm hoping for a no bullshit exposé into just how shitty/evil the richest man in the entire world is.
-10
u/Alleged3443 1d ago
Haven't seen any bot replies sucking up to the Musky but have seen a lot of astroturf advertising to see the movie
6
u/adeepkick 1d ago
There are a ton of “I hate Musk so I don’t wanna see it” comments here. A statement that makes no sense at all beyond trying to get Musk haters uninterested. Thus it stinks of bot campaign activity.
8
u/Burritoaddict11 1d ago
You can dislike someone and not want to watch a movie about them. That is what makes sense.
3
u/adeepkick 1d ago
What makes no sense is trying to foster a sentiment of “I shouldn’t see this if I don’t like him” when in reality, it’s critical of the man you claim to hate. Don’t you want to see his controversies and childish behavior stay in the public eye? That’s the goal of this doc.
Pretending it’s not worth seeing is pro-Musk behavior. I’m doubtful that you actually dislike him and you might be a bot too.
1
u/maynardftw 1d ago
I dunno if it's worth seeing; I live in the world he's in and I've followed all his nonsense, it's not gonna tell me anything I don't already know. I hate him because of what I know. I also wouldn't go see a Trump documentary, because it'd just be everything I've been seeing play out in real time, but in an hour and a half with a narrator.
I'm cool with it existing, but I don't need it.
1
u/adeepkick 1d ago
Copying my reply to someone else so I don’t have to type this all out again:
The problem becomes you and a whole host of people being very vocal about how you don’t need to watch this if you know enough about Musk. People see that repeated again and again and start to feel the same through osmosis or believe it’s the right opinion to have.
Then the audience for this documentary shrinks.

Are you not seeing the correlation here? Your words have impact, even if it’s unintentional.
0
u/maynardftw 1d ago
If it were just presented without invitation to a conversation about whether someone should or should not want to watch it, then I wouldn't have anything to say about it.
But that's the thread we find ourselves in. I didn't make this post, I didn't make this thread. I found someone suggesting that anyone who doesn't like him should want to watch the documentary, and I had a response to that. If you didn't want a response, you shouldn't have said that in a public space where people can respond.
There's a million documentaries that come out every year that I have no comment on. This would've been one of them.
2
u/adeepkick 1d ago
Who said I didn’t want a response? Bro you’re missing the many, many top level responses here from people who claim they don’t wanna see the movie because they already don’t like Musk. Not to me, but the post itself.
1
u/maynardftw 1d ago
Am I missing it or is it irrelevant to what I'm saying?
You're telling me why I shouldn't have said what I said where I said it, and you're bringing up other people saying other things in other places.
I said what I said for the reason I said it. They said it for other reasons. Telling me about what they did doesn't do much for the interaction we're supposedly having here.

I never said I hated him. You lack common sense and need to quit focusing so hard on the things you hate. I promise it is ruining your life.
-1
u/adeepkick 1d ago
Oh word that adds up. Enjoy suckin’ on that boot! 👍
1
u/Its_Nitsua 1d ago
Because he doesn't say he hates Musk, he's a bootlicker?
Do you not see the problem with that line of thinking?
1
u/adeepkick 1d ago
If you’re even neutral on Musk at this point, you’re either an idiot or a terrible person. Billionaires are the boot and they’re stepping down harder every single day.

u/Burritoaddict11 1d ago

2
u/adeepkick 1d ago
It’s probably because Elon Musk is a verifiable piece of shit on an existential scale
-2
u/Burritoaddict11 1d ago
It's reddit. If that does not explain it then ya gotta quit trying to understand.
Depending on what sub you are in, this place is a cesspool. There are small corners of beauty but they are getting smaller and smaller by the month. Mostly it is just people pushing thier brand of hate. Thankfully real life is not like this. Most of these people would get laughed back into thier mom's basement where they came from.
Reddit used to be a lovely thing.
4
u/porkbrains 1d ago
I clocked this campaign style as soon as this film was announced. Watch Gibney's other film Agents of Chaos if you haven't, the manufactured disinterest is a classic tactic.
0
u/Alleged3443 1d ago
I suppose, but that is also an entirely reasonable take that a million people are gonna have. Skepticism is fine, reasonable, and understandable; blanket assumptions less so. That said I would be surprised if there wasn't a bot campaign on both sides - muskies trying to make the flick flop, and marketers/advertisers trying to get people to go see it
I am in that "I can't fucking stand the shitstain and have no desire to watch a 4 hour documentary about him" camp
That said, I hold it in higher esteem than the stupid as hell "social reckoning" movie that's coming out. Holy shit the rant I could go on about that.
1
u/adeepkick 1d ago
You aren’t curious about the extent with which he sucks? You aren’t curious about how this evil person came to be evil?
Also idk why you’re “both sides”-ing this bot stuff. One side made a movie and has much less resources than the, you know, multi-billion dollar conglomerates with an endless pool of money to discredit a scathing look at a billionaire you claim to hate.
I’m sorry, but your disdain for these pieces of media that make billionaires look bad is incredibly suspect
1
u/Alleged3443 1d ago
Oh I have no disdain for the documentary itself, I think it is something that going forward will be great to have as (yet another) reminder that the rich shouldn't be trusted.
I already know how he became evil - he was the child of rich south African oligarchs that benefitted from apartheid and is a sociopath.
As for the rest of his story, the vast majority of it has already played out in the public forum and been reported on plenty.
We don't need a massive story telling every little detail of every shitty human. Some people just suck. A lot of this often just boils down to the opposite side of the celebrity worship coin. Who he was is irrelevant to who he is today in the sense that I don't need to know the back story of someone holding a gun to my head to know they aren't someone I should like or trust
2
u/adeepkick 1d ago
The issue is that others don’t know he’s holding a gun to their heads. Pushing the idea that “I already know he’s bad so I don’t need to see it” is reductive. If everyone who knows he’s bad is convinced to not see it, then it doesn’t have an audience to pick up steam for it to be in the public consciousness to find the ones who do need to see it. Which are people who are on the fence and unaware of just how bad he is. People whose minds can be changed by new information presented in a digestible format.
2
u/Alleged3443 1d ago
I mean this seriously: I do not think anyone in the public consciousness of the United States is unaware of who elon musk is and hasn't already developed an opinion of him that this docu will sway, and I do not think that the people this could potentially sway will hear of it anyway because they are so out of touch that they won't see this either.
Maybe I am being overly pessimistic about all of this, I will grant you that.
1
u/adeepkick 1d ago
Then why are Musk and his friends spending so much money to tank it?
3
u/Alleged3443 1d ago
Occam's Razor? Because Musk is a sociopath and hates anything that makes him look inwardly and have some introspection. Not like he didn't buy an entire social media platform because of his fee fees
Don't get me wrong, like I have said in a bunch of other posts, dude is a shitbag and anyone who somehow doesn't know that should watch this.
→ More replies (0)-16
u/TuckinPhypo 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's important to wait for there to be some actual replies before claiming they are made by bots. Unless you are the bot...
"That's so reddit" edit: I know you can see the times and see that this guy had only the 4th reply posted. What I don't know is whether the downvotes are actual idiots, or if they think they are making some pro (or anti?) Elon statement.
16
u/spank_the_tank 1d ago
Nah literally every other comment is telling people not to watch it. The bots are out en masse
4
u/adeepkick 1d ago
This whole “I don’t wanna see it cause I hate Musk” sentiment stinks of a bot campaign by Musk sympathizers. It’s nonsensical and misrepresentative of what this documentary is aiming to do. That’s why this guy assumed bots.
3
u/shadedmagus 1d ago
I mean, I hate Musk, and the prospect of spending 4 hours watching him on a screen doesn't exactly fill me with joy.
But it's important work, and I'm going to see it because he has such gross influence on world events that he should not be able to live free from scrutiny.
2
u/adeepkick 1d ago
This is the right attitude to have. Know thy enemy. A film doesn’t need to bring you joy to be worth seeing.

I can't blame YouTube on this. Watching an entire documentary about Elon Musk sounds less pleasant than an IUD insertion without numbing. Why would I willingly subject myself to something about him, because it'll say a few mean things and point out that he's a loser? I can do that.
He's a loser who pays people to be successful on his behalf. It kills him that he never got his daddy's approval. He is not nearly as clever or industrious as he would like you to believe. He is the low hanging fruit of society. Dude is built like a deep breath.
Ta da, no need to watch the documentary. You're welcome 🌈✌️

u/JustWill_HD 1d ago
documentary is reported to be a "definitive and unvarnished examination" of businessman Elon Musk. Listed as appearing in the film are ex-wife Justine Musk, child custody rival Ashley St. Clair, journalists Kara Swisher and Zoë Schiffer, and engineers Martin Eberhard and Geoffrey Hinton.
I doubt it paints him in any favourable light

That's true but they are probably not people who are going to be watching it, so there's a weird dynamic at play here:

I'm taking note of every single chain that shows this movie around me and they are now my favorite theater chain, or individual theater.
There are very few places showing this movie Nationwide on October 16th. If you live in Southern California, you have a lot of options, otherwise not so much. One theater in San Francisco is showing the movie. The Bay area, land of extremely anti-black right-wing racist non-white p eople who drive Teslas, Is mostly shunning this movie.

Idk it seems like this is just another marketing strategy. Whether intentional or not, this is exactly the kind of situation that the target audience would be intrigued by, much more so than standard advertisements.
Typical "this is the truth that the powers-that-be don't want you to see!"
Everybody can see that clear as day when it's content designed for the opposition but when it's something you personally agree with, the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect runs in full force.

I mean he has destroyed goverment agencies that were prosecuting him and his companies, stole data, runs a nazi platform, and is in gerneral interested in destroying democracy. (and not just in the US)
Kind of good if more people that might not already be aware of this charlatain (or at least the degree of it) to see this. Nobody forcing you to watch it though.

That's what I mean. I'm not the target audience for it. I think almost 4 hours is too long FOR ANYBODY though. I hope it does well, it probably would have done better had it not required such a time commitment.

I understand. And fair enough, you are informed and this might not be it for you.

Is the documentary even worth anything? Didn’t they censor a lot of the really bad stuff out?

It depends on how much you know about Musk. I don't think this has a lot of new stuff, and will probably mostly be a greatest hits collection of the shitty stuff he's known for. Not an inventor, not a genius, a shitty dad obsessed with having children and not loving them, a nazi, doing election crimes, stealing government data and destroying the federal agencies investigating his companies for crimes, and a sad, insecure, drug addled child.
Turns out the "richest" dude in the world can do a lot of evil.

I’m already know a decent amount about how terrible of a person he is. It’s gross this man child can have enough influence to have the documentary cut things and he still gets it effectively blacklisted. If he was going to try and kill it still they should have left the worst of it in

It’s not only YouTube and the big corporations it’s people with two cents and a job.

Sorry, I couldn’t get past the initial laughing at a migration of illegals headed to our boarders and they twist it into gop manipulation. Hello! They are migrating because they think there is a good chance they will be let through!!! These streamers are so cringe I couldn’t keep the video going.

Who's hiding this tho? Is it left-leaners who don't want to platform him, or right-leaners who don't want to get embarrassed ??

This literally makes no sense. Musk himself and big studios headed by right wing conglomerates are suppressing it. Verifiably so.
What “left-leaners” could possibly be covering it up? Hell, this video in the post is made by a leftist.

Take it easy, people. I was genuinely curious. I can see YouTube and Co. getting cold feet if the doc somehow endorses White supremacy. You can't see him producing some lunatic Leni Riefentahl thing? I guess it's open season on this documentary lol - it's gonna be huge XD Can't wait to see it
EDIT: OK I spent like three minutes researching. It was a very dumb question. I'll see myself out.

Elon Musk was basically Trump for hardcore liberals 15 years ago. Reddit was in love with him.

It’s not just YouTube. All the big corps are refusing to advertise the doc. The rich don’t like this kind of attention, they just want it to fade away.
