President Trump Announces the Last American Forces Leaving Iraq: "It's been bad decision-making that got us involved in this quagmire in the first place. This is a great day for America. We're getting the hell out of there. It's a victory for Iraq, and a victory over ISIS, which has been decimated."

Btw, the deal to pull out of Iraq was negotiated under Biden in 2024. Trump taking credit once again for something he didn’t actually do..
345
u/TheGhostofWoodyAllen 16h ago
He takes credit for things he didn't do (leaving Iraq) and then blames others for what he did do (leaving Afghanistan).
94
u/davideogameman 13h ago
It's simpler than that. If it goes right he takes credit. If it goes wrong he either bullshits that it didn't or passes the blame.
39
u/Cirenione 13h ago
The guy is so stupid and his base cares so little that he he flat out said that during an interview.

Actually, didn't Trump setup the sudden/messy withdrawal to happen after Biden took office? Everyone (MAGA) blamed Biden for the horrible pull out. Now Trump is taking credit for the thing he got people riled up about.
That's my memory of it. I could be mistaken.
Edit: my mistake. That was Afghanistan.

I’m curious on what happens in west asia once the dems retake control and kill the Iran war. Are there just no troops in Afghanistan/Iran/Iraq? How long has it been without ground troops in those countries? 30, 40 years?
38
u/DexterBotwin 17h ago
There will still be troops in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, not to mention strong presence in Turkey and Eastern Europe, North Africa, and the Indian Ocean.
14
u/MrE_Gamer 16h ago
Oh yeah American meddling will absolutely remain in the region, it’s just that those three countries specifically have been at the forefront of American intervention for so long it feels weird that we might not have anything there soon
10
u/invisible32 16h ago
Troops in the UAE and Saudi Arabia are like troops in South Korea and Germany. Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan is closer to troops in Vietnam.

Sounds like US forces aren't leaving the region, but re-positioning to a new safer (theoretical) distance from Iran.
Just a guestimation, but I think this will lead to a doubling and tripling of forces in Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia etc.
Before the US could have totally left the region, but now Trump's made that impossible.
3
u/FreakindaStreet 15h ago
The militias in Iraq were working with Iran, which made things untenable, as they could (and definitely did) relay info to Iran. Seems like the threat level continued to rise, with the next step being the militias carrying out attacks on bases.
The troops aren’t going to any GCC bases, as those were prime targets, and were mostly leveled in those first weeks of retaliatory strikes by Iran.
They’ll most probably be scattered and sent to Jordan and (maybe) Israel, Egypt, Djibouti…etc. where they are (were) now is too close.
This is all due to the US being unable to effectively defend against Iranian saturation attacks, which is something the US’s top brass knew and warned about.

The same issue that has been happening forever. You can't kill an ideology, nor can you stop someone halfway across the world from bringing the label home. And in forcefully trying to stamp it out, you only breed it worse. How many "Taliban fighters" were eliminated in afghanistan and look at it now. stupid is as stupid does. A quantity of those that fight in these groups are specifically more inspired by anti-american/imperial sentiment, than by any religious fervour.
8
u/TehOwn 15h ago
I do wonder what you're supposed to do to stop it, though. Because, "just be nice to everyone" never seems to stop hate.
Seems like a pretty complex (impossible?) problem to solve.
3
u/davideogameman 13h ago
There are definitely some hard questions there. I do know some of our mistakes:
- publicly wanting to withdraw from Afghanistan made the Taliban think "let's just wait them out"
- negotiating with the Taliban without the Afghan government meant the deal we made to withdraw was going to be a bad one for them.
- we suck at nation building. One piece of this puzzle, we set up the Afghan military to fight like us... but they didn't have the capabilities or culture to support an American-style military. With US withdrawal, the Taliban made the majority of the country into hostile territory pretty quickly. On the military side, we should've instead answered the question of how their society would be best off organizing a military and tried to help them build that instead of teaching NATO tactics that require NATO supply chains and logistics, air support, etc. I bet there's a ton more to dig into here ... Just because we help a country establish a government with a constitution doesn't mean it'll stand when our support is removed.
3
u/Leahdrin 13h ago
Not interfering across the world would probably help. The CIA did this to make sure the military industrial complex would always need to be churned.

Modern Definition: To severely damage or wipe out a massive number of a population, organization, or resource (e.g., "The disease decimated the local wildlife")

Decimate: to reduce by 10%. Literally draw lots so that 1 in 10 are killed.
If you decimate your enemy you leave them 90% effective on the field.

That is the literal meaning yes. However, modern usage is much different and is commonly used to mean near completely destroyed. Like, I hate Trump but this type of nitpicky stuff just makes us look like bookworm nerds. There’s so many better things to get him with than “He used a word to mean the thing everyone else uses it as but it’s definition doesn’t mean that.”
5
u/IZ3820 16h ago

Oh man it's so much worse.
The origin of decimate is the roman legions. Extremely rarely, a military unit would be punished for whatever, with decimation. They'd be divided into groups of ten and then one person out of every group of ten was killed by the other 9.
