If they not perverts why they wear pervert glasses?

u/LifeToTheMedium 18h ago

To make PoV ewaste scrapping vids for me lol.

I know a couple of clinicians who use them to make wound rv videos and take audio notes while keeping a clean field instead of a pile of static photos.

Anywhere where a GoPro headmount makes sense but less action content these are much lighter and easy to use.

I haven't seen them in the wild yet tbh.

Also popular for rollercoaster POVs since they are now allowed to be used on most Six Flags rides. They have niche applications, but wearing them to record people in Starbucks seems to be way too popular.

Every company that makes a product that is essentially a computer on your face thinks that’s what everyone wants and it just hasn’t been done lightweight and comfortable enough. The truth is that the only people who want the computer on their face and not their hands are people that work with their hands. If these didn’t have the Meta brand they’d probably go the way of all the others and end up primarily used as a tool more than a consumer product.

Yeh this. Like other guy said you can be a perv with a phone just as easily. "Carhartt welding safety glasses that record your working conditions so you don't get screwed over by your employer" and same crowd would love it.

u/Swoly_Deadlift 6h ago

I think there are Meta Oakley cycling glasses now so they are slowly moving away from the casual glasses.

1

u/LifeToTheMedium 5h ago

If I'm wearing Oakley's it's to make sure my crack deals don't go bad and I have dashcam footage 😄

Just because you can only think of pervy reasons to use them doesn’t mean everyone else is a piece of shit too

3

u/TsunamiCatCakes 11h ago

exactly. they are reallly good for bike vlogging, food flogging, POV streams for road side stalls (big thing my 3rd world country), pressure washing videos (super in demand). not everyone is a pervert. those glasses just remove the need for a phone mount helmet

2

u/warmbutterydiapers 8h ago

Pressure washing vids are super in demand lol.  People are so fucking weird.

1

u/TsunamiCatCakes 48m ago

dude I love them. there is a dude on Instagram who does it for free at times and explains whole story about the cleaning

4

u/Vektor0 16h ago edited 15h ago

Yeah, I was really interested in getting them for all their other features. I have no interest in recording anyone. But stories and posts like this make me feel like just by wearing them, I'd automatically be guilty by association in the court of public opinion. That kinda sucks.

Good news, Reddit isn’t the real world and most people don’t give a fuck. The ones who do aren’t worth caring about. Don’t let a bunch of socially inept basement dwellers tell you what you can and cannot do.

6

u/TsunamiCatCakes 11h ago

irl people really dont give a fuck dude. its mostly online echo chambers where you will see such a big deal out of the glasses

3

u/ShawnyMcKnight 10h ago

If it helps no one in the real world were upset I wore them. I’m a web developer so my friends like gadgets and they thought the glasses were cool.

Don’t let people who haven’t touched grass in years dictate what you enjoy.

My main reluctance is as a developer I may get a job at a place that has security concerns with cameras in my glasses.

2

u/TsunamiCatCakes 46m ago

exactly. irl people don't care. also if place tells you that you cant wear camera glasses, they provide a sticky tape to place over the camera (very common for phones too). so you don't have to remove the glasses

7

u/Bright_Cranberry_227 16h ago

Yeah this whole thread is the perfect example of why every accusation is a confession.

because hobbies are awesome with these, no need to have one hand occupied in a phone, voice commands are really nice.

It also scares redditors away which are people I don't want to be close to irl

2

u/ShawnyMcKnight 10h ago

I have gotten into altercations, like when a dog came into our yard and attacked our dog, I was able to enable video to record the altercation and separate the dogs with both hands free.

People on here are ignoring the fact it has a bigass light you can’t turn off.

11

u/TerrytheToeSucker 18h ago

There's people that use them to record interactions for safety reasons, there are genuine reasons to use them. There just happen to be a lot of really bad things they can be used for as well. Someone wearing them in public is not necessarily enough to form any judgement of what they're doing, and more information is needed.

u/xhephaestusx 15h ago

This is the argument for carrying guns.

I get this is the us, but remember that invasive cameras that allow the government to see anything at anytime aren't a way we prevent government overreach.

The harms here clearly outweigh the benefits.

Use em at home, idc.

Don't fucking film me or my family at Starbucks or at the park or at a bar or.......... fucking anywhere.

3

u/TerrytheToeSucker 15h ago

While I understand, and overall agree, I also see the merit in having a camera that allows your hands to be free to gather evidence and still protect yourself if need be, this type of situation is not black and white. The people that abuse this type of thing to gather content for social media are the problem, the camera is just the tool being misused in this case.

-2

u/xhephaestusx 14h ago

The people that abuse this tool for social media gratification are nothing compared to the people who use this tool for sexual gratification, and the fact that you keep ignoring that while having a foot fetish related name is honestly pretty telling.

2

u/TerrytheToeSucker 11h ago

My name being a crass, but ultimately meaningless joke has zero bearing on this discussion, nor is it telling of anything

I am not "ignoring" the people who do those kinds of things, I simply am pointing out that there are valid reasons to have and wear these cameras, related to potentially recording dangerous or confrontational situations for evidence.

1

u/MatterofDoge 7h ago

The harms here clearly outweigh the benefits.

no they don't. There's like a thousand things I could come up with off the top of my head that have benefit, and there's one singular harm that can be done with it, and it's a harm that's been around in our society since the first handheld camera let alone an age where everyone has a cellphone, and that "harm" is you being filmed when you don't want to be. Which is fair to be annoyed about, but not to the point that you start comparing it to guns lol

1

u/LifeToTheMedium 5h ago

That happens with phones every single day though no?

Do you want to ban them?

How many world star bashings or creepy public prank and bullying studd has been done on phones?

7

u/GPTMCT 17h ago

Blind people use them to describe what they are looking at.

-4

u/ehs06702 16h ago

Yes, I've seen the PR commercials they put out with the blind veteran and the music designed to manipulate my emotions.

9

u/RedditJumpedTheShart 16h ago

Ironic saying this on social media especially with this post.

-1

u/ehs06702 15h ago

How is it ironic? It did the opposite of its intention, at least for me. I recognize that they're invoking the troops and disabled elderly people as a manipulation for people with the spines of jellyfish to be moved by the "legitimate case use", thus mainstreaming the invasive technology

4

u/donoteatshrimp 12h ago

You're missing his point. You're disparaging emotional manipulation from the advert while being emotionally manipulated by social media instead.

1

u/ehs06702 4h ago

It's weird to assume I can't use my brain and understand the inherent issues here and need to be manipulated by social media to dislike these glasses.

But I suppose if you're pro police state you have to create some kind of narrative that accounts for people having different opinions.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight 10h ago

Truth!

People on here are being manipulated that it’s a common belief that people who get the glasses are perverts when in reality the vast majority don’t give a shit or think it’s neat. I had them for 2 years and no one ever cared.

3

u/Visual-Scallion1535 15h ago

It actually seems like a viable use case though

-2

u/ehs06702 15h ago

Yeah, that's the point of using blind veterans. You're emotionally manipulated to think "Well, I suppose it does help them, what's the harm" and you're thus primed to accept it in other facets of public life.

They're banking on people being stupid enough to allow privacy to die by inches.

4

u/Visual-Scallion1535 15h ago

Everybody already has a camera in their hand 24/7 why do I care if its in their glasses

0

u/ehs06702 15h ago

I can see when a pervert or criminal trying to film things they shouldn't with a phone. Why on earth would I want to make life easier for people like that.

I used to watch Minority Report as a teenager and wonder how they let shit like that happen to their society, and the answer has become clearer the longer I have to participate on society, lmao.

2

u/aguywithbrushes 12h ago

Anybody could pretend to be on a phone call/texting and record you instead. You’d have absolutely no clue.

3

u/Much_Vehicle20 15h ago

So you don't want blind people to have an easier life in exchange for, check notes, literally nothing from you? You already have no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public place. I can pull out my phone right now and record you while you're waiting for your Starbucks, and the best you could do is leave the store, because you have no right to stop people from recording a public. Unless you live somewhere with laws that prohibit recording people in public, then fair enough

0

u/ehs06702 15h ago

I didn't say that. I said the intention is to mainstream the use of these glasses by provoking this exact response.

2

u/Much_Vehicle20 15h ago

provoking this exact response

I mean, yeah, because why tf not? This is how any normal person with moral should react

2

u/ShawnyMcKnight 10h ago

What kind of asshole aims to make someone feel bad because they like a certain tech even if they have no intention of using it for evil purposes? Just to have this irrational desire to label them something just because they like a pair of glasses?

We should normalize thinking people like that are assholes than normalizing everyone with meta glasses are perverts.

If the glasses keep assholes like that away from me just by wearing them I should consider getting them again, sounds like a great feature!

1

u/Nick1693 9h ago

You sound emotional.

-1

u/ehs06702 4h ago

Sure, in the sense that I find it hilarious that people fell very easily for such obvious tactics. Also in the sense that I'm confused because I can't tell if all the people rushing to dogpile me are Meta bots or just tech fanboys really upset that I think they're weak minded for not noticing the manipulation and defending it so hard.

2

u/Nick1693 2h ago

Oh, god. You're actually insane. Calm down. Things aren't black and white: Something can be useful for some people while also being very bad for others. That means we use safeguards, not toss it out completely.

6

u/dqql 18h ago

they work as headphones and let me listen to podcasts on my bike while still hearing traffic… also recording videos on my bike.
my phone also has 3 cameras on it and i’ve never thought about secretly recording people in public, but i could definitely pretend to be on the phone while recording people.
btw, you’re a pervert and it’s obvious

-5

u/hefty_load_o_shite 18h ago

If you not pervert why you wear pervert glasses?

1

u/dqql 17h ago

my brother died and i got his glasses.
i hate fb and would otherwise never use them, but i like using his old stuff.
pervert

2

u/xhephaestusx 15h ago

Bizarrely defensive

2

u/Bladesnake_______ 16h ago

same reason people record things with their phones

1

u/StoryAndAHalf 12h ago

I thought about it being handy to make electrical and wood carving vids since my hands are busy and I would know if the view is good or is my hand in the way without having a gopro or something in front of my nose. But those hobbies take too long and aren't particularly interesting enough to watch to justify the purchase.

1

u/MatterofDoge 7h ago

this is like asking "if you're not a stabber, why do you have knives in your kitchen" lol. There's like a million things you could use those glasses for that have no malice at all.

1

u/Swoly_Deadlift 7h ago

Believe it or not, there is a lot of value to content creators in a small camera that makes POV footage. Product delineations, sports, hobbies, etc.

0

u/kne0n 15h ago

Plenty of people wear them for sports action shots and the newest ones have a screen in the lense you can use apps on. Just like phones getting cameras back in the day a few perverts ruined the concept for everyone. Honestly I’m looking forward to glasses having complete augmented reality like apple vision or meta quest so I can ditch carrying a phone entirely but unfortunately cameras are needed for that.
