"Women are being advised to play copyrighted Disney music when they spot men secretly recording them with Meta glasses."
2.2k
u/NobodyLikedThat1 18h ago edited 18h ago
That used to be the advice for those first amendment auditors so they can't monetize the YouTube videos but apparently it's fairly easy to find editing software to get rid of the copyrighted music
Not sure what the point of that would be for the guys in Meta glasses unless they're trying to monetize it

u/CrazyBigHog 18h ago
Right? I would imagine most of the videos taken by creeps are for personal spank material and not for content.

Apparently you can voice command them to stop recording, which is way more convenient than soundtracking your public life with Disney songs anyway, but I'm just repeating what I've read in reddit comments, not verified info.

I just did some quick research & that's the official prompt, though "Hey Meta, stop video." or "Hey Meta, stop recording." also work but these only work if they have voice commands enabled which is apparently a choice during setup & optional in settings, they're not automatically enabled.

I believe the new tactic to jam up these kinds of fuckers is actually to act like you're doing a segue to a sponsorship, which fucks with adsense and stuff so they have to junk all the footage.
62
u/mjac1090 16h ago
Unless the point isn't to make money. These creeps are likely just recording women they want to jerk off to so none of those things will prevent them from recording then or jerking off later. Also, I really hate that this is a fucking thing. It really isn't difficult to be a decent person, or at least it shouldn't be.
14
u/Malefectra 16h ago
It doesn't prevent them, but your odd behavior acting like you were suddenly filming an ad spot would get a fair bit of bystander attention. Last time I had to deal with anything even remotely like that I learned that creeps hate bystander attention. It's pretty much their Kryptonite because they know it could end with their ass getting beat or arrested.
3
u/AnRealDinosaur 14h ago
My go to has always been to attract as much attention as possible. I yell and point at the dude "EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS CREEP" as loud as I can. Obviously this only works in a place with other people, but its been pretty effective.

It's delusional to think any variety of music could ever possibly stand in the way of this "content" being monetized... either predators pay for the footage, or they don't. The audio is pretty much 100% irrelevant for this sort of thing. It's like saying "if you don't want your art stolen, just put your name in the corner", completely ignoring all the people who will 1. steal it anyway and 2. crop your name out. A lot of "rizz videos" are being recorded and uploaded online using the pervert glasses. The glasses-wearing chode will record himself hitting on random pretty women and upload any interactions that make him look good or make the women look bad. Since the other half of motivation behind this crap other than stroking their own ego is content farming and monetization, songs from a company as quick to act as Disney get the videos either claimed, taken down, or their channel struck. And with the entire point of the content being the dialogue they can't just mute the audio before uploading.
But yes, you and others are correct that this does nothing if they are keeping recordings private or uploading on scummier sites that don't give a shit about copyright infringement.
10
u/C7rl_Al7_1337 16h ago
Even if they're uploading to youtube, removing the music is literally one click. I think that youtube itself even has a built in tool now for removing music, but I could 100% remove Disney music while keeping any other audio in DaVinci Resolve in about 15 seconds.

Unfortunately society is not pushing back as hard on these. I think it's twofold: people have been more exposed to cameras being everywhere compared to 2013, and these Meta glasses aren't nearly as stupid looking. Meta and Ray Bands are pushing these things fucking hard with much higher production volumes than Google Glass. They're gradually spreading everywhere. They just have to weather this storm of weak push back from society for a couple years, then they will be everywhere. We're screwed.

To be fair, Meta prohibits it and tries harder than you’d assume to impede it. There’s a hardware interlock that, on the latest glasses, is fairly deep such that removing the LED is very likely to either break the glasses core functions or get caught as a tampering attempt by the OS. That second point also impedes 3rd party repairs, so it’s not like they’re doing it exclusively for good reasons.
Src: used to work there. People can and should give them shit where it’s due (the latest lawsuits are deserved and overdue), but the glasses team is genuinely concerned and in an arms race with the modders.

Correct. It would make it harder to post on many public platforms, but it could still be recorded and shared privately. And once it's in multiple people's hands, the chances of one of them taking the effort to remove the music (or hell, just strip the audio out entirely) are high. Only a matter of time it gets posted.
I understand the effort but we need more legislation and crackdown on these things because technology is advancing too quickly

Everybody was really worked up about being stalked with AirTags for a hot minute, and everyone just forgot all of a sudden. Like the guy committed to stalking you is going to use something that beeps loudly and sends notifications directly to your phone when it's been near you long enough, and has all your identifying information that Apple can hand over to police. Instead of just buying a device actually used for tracking people for less money on aliexpress.
→ More replies (1)6
u/licoricenipple 10h ago edited 10h ago
AirTags originally only beeped or notified you of proximity after 3 days, and there were recorded cases of stalkers putting them on their victims' cars and swapping them out every few nights to avoid it. They shortened it to randomized sub-day intervals because of all the people worked up about stalking.
The pre-existing tracking devices you're talking about were considered riskier because they required an active SIM card and data plan for real-time tracking, and in many countries it's hard to sign up for a data plan without identifying information. AirTags worked without a data plan and only required an Apple account which you could create anonymously. The other type, which don't require a data plan but only record GPS information to internal storage, were a lot less popular for stalkers because they didn't offer real-time tracking, only history.

Literally already a thing for meta glasses. People were getting around that by paying people (I believe it used to be they would drill into the light but I read they updated the glasses so that the camera not seeing the light turns it off. I'm guessing there's so new mod now)

I am not talking about company standards but required by law.
3
u/bs000 13h ago
The shutter sound isn't required by law in Japan either. It was just something all the major phone brands agreed to do voluntarily when cellphone cameras were starting to get popular. It was a preemptive measure out of fear that the government would outright ban cellphone cameras if they didn't do something to soothe public fears about privacy.

It is not illegal to film someone on the street.
Over here in Germany, it is. You can't just film people without their consent, that's against our personality rights. But still, I don't think such a device would be forbidden only because you "could" potentially do something illegal with it. There are a lot of legal uses for them which are no problem. I agree though, some kind of light signal to show a camera is filming, might be a good solution.

→ More replies (1)17

This is defined by the law, too. When you take pictures of sights, and there are people randomly in the background, taking the picture is legal. You're not directly pointing the camera at their faces and focusing them, they are random background. But, if you want to upload the picture online where it can be seen in public, then you have to blur out the faces.

I mean... the people who need to be told these things are who they are because they don't care about what you think proper behavior is in the first place, so going on a "men need to change" rant is at best ineffective, and at worst it generalizes all the men minding their own business being told they need to change behavior they don't have, making them jaded and apathetic to the problems women face because it just becomes "here we go again getting blamed and lectured for stuff I don't do". So all in all, its a useless endeavor that doesn't help anything and basically makes things worse.
So yea... forgive people for trying to come up with some type of response besides that pointless option

exactly. they are reallly good for bike vlogging, food flogging, POV streams for road side stalls (big thing my 3rd world country), pressure washing videos (super in demand). not everyone is a pervert. those glasses just remove the need for a phone mount helmet

because hobbies are awesome with these, no need to have one hand occupied in a phone, voice commands are really nice.
It also scares redditors away which are people I don't want to be close to irl

There's people that use them to record interactions for safety reasons, there are genuine reasons to use them. There just happen to be a lot of really bad things they can be used for as well. Someone wearing them in public is not necessarily enough to form any judgement of what they're doing, and more information is needed.

It seems to me that if you have time to pull out some music device and start up a Disney playlist, you have time to pull out a can of spray paint* and, uh, temporarily obscure the camera's lens.
*For legal reasons, I mean non-toxic, water soluble spray paint. I'm sure someone makes that.

I’m sure all the people recording care about is the actual video, not the audio unfortunately. They’re trying to capture what they see, not hear

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 18h ago
To answer the question, because recording in public is legal. This isn't really a new concept. Hidden cameras on clothing have been a thing for a while as well. What people have an issue with now is how fast and synchronized the camera is with the Internet and AI that allows someone to find information on you potentially very fast.

u/Bladesnake_______ 16h ago
But your phone can do that with photos and the internet just as fast. thats not even unique to the glasses

Whether you are for or against concealable recording devices, the conversations around these glasses are so full of people who have no idea what they're talking about lmao

If you have money to blow, I'm certain that THIS will permanently destroy the photoreceptors in any camera with very little effort.
For this particular application, however, you're at a huge risk of blinding the creep since his creep shades' cameras are an inch away from his eyes.

Should count as reasonable self defense

Don Henley’s probably even more aggressive than Disney in pursuing copyright violations.

Or just start singing the lyrics to hotel California. They might be able to use software to cancel out the played audios. But they can't use you for content if all you're doing is singing a copyrighted song. And Hotel California is notorious for getting striked all the time. Even if you mention the name of the song you are at risk.

Does that make Disney lawyers the good guys in this story? Or at least like biomimicry like a milk snake or that moth with the giant owl eyes
4
u/No-Advice-6040 15h ago
Disney? Bah. Just keep playing Eagles songs. Don Henley will paratroop on to your location with a crack team of lawyers to sue your ass.

game is absolutely gone, for multiple reasons
first being that creepy men are recording women without their consent
second that we’re living in an age where we’re allowing people to wear glasses to record videos of people
third, that the workaround is to record copyrighted music so algorithms will remove the videos
at no point here is there any humanity- where are people’s rights and respect of each other?

u/yesimfinewhyyouask 3h ago
Can someone explain why the fuck would they even film? You have googlebytes of porn till the end of history for free, and you need to film clothed women telling you to fuck off?

u/ThePr0vider 2h ago
something being illegal onl;y stops honest people. See: the fuckheads who offer the service to drill out the LED that tells you the glases are recording (and the people who pay for it)
7
u/newAscadia 15h ago
This doesn't really address the issue
Kind of hard to spot someone secretly recording you when you know, they're secretly recording you.
A bozo with a phone, sure this is helpful advice, but one of the infuriating things about Meta glasses is half the time you don't even know you're being recorded

How would you know or feel that someone is ‘secretly’ recording you if they’re doing it secretly and if there’s no obvious way to know that they’re doing it?
Those glasses should be illegal though, I feel they should only be allowed in very specific professional situations.

They're not illegal for the same reason that cameras in general aren't illegal.
9
u/Space19723103 15h ago
they are 'legal' because camera laws haven't been properly enforced or updated for phones yet let alone up to the glasses

You guys. This is it. This is how we get real life musicals. You know most girls are just going have to break into a "Let it Go" and all supportive girl's girls in the vicinity are going to backup sing for her.

These women are amateurs. If they play Nintendo songs instead then Nintendo will try to get a patent on Meta glasses.

If this is real then I feel something has to be said about society having laws to protect the rights of songs and music but not the rights of women

I find it best to assume anyone who owns these glasses are douches that should be avoided at all costs even when not actively wearing them.
6
u/ItsABiscuit 14h ago
If not totally illegal, they should at least be required to have a bright light that activates when they are turned on, so it’s obvious to people that you’re wearing a camera and potentially live streaming or recording them.
We don’t ban phones having cameras, but the insidious thing about the glasses is that they are a pervert, stalker or surveillance agent’s delight because they are essentially a hidden camera.

i'm pretty sure attempting to blind someone with a laser is a little more illegal than filming in public. and if by 'high grade' you mean over 1 mW, that's illegal to even possess

Alright you can have your comments back.
Before anyone comments with suggestions that vaguely or outright resemble violence please note they will be removed, and that they may get you banned.
Threats of violence, however well intentioned you may think they are, even if not directed at any specific person will draw the wrath of Reddit itself.
This warning is not here because I disagree that misusing these glasses is disgusting, it’s here to ensure you make smart decisions and don’t get your account banned by Reddit.
