No, that gives a “camera blocked” error. The light in the LED has to match the light captured by the camera

Because it was a software update that was pushed retroactively only because of public outcry

It sounds like the software update was that it only checked at the start of recording so you could catch people who had drilled it out permanently but not people who started recording and then covered it with tape. So, it then continuously checked.

Short of putting a light sensor next to the LED, there is no way for an electronic device to tell the difference between an LED light and a well-designed circuit that mimics the LED.

That's present as well as firmware blocks. They mod the glasses by drilling into the lens where the light is to break it. The firmware check thinks the glasses are still powering it but there's no bulb.
