Right, I was growing up when we all thought augmented reality could become a thing, I'm not a pervert, I just want a HUD

God I wish, I mishear stuff constantly, IRL subtitles would be a GODSEND.

I think Apple Watches do that now. Or will soon

You can live translate on your phone. I’m sure you could do the same with captions, but then it completely takes you out of the conversation. Having a HUD is seamless, and allows you to continue looking toward the person.

How to use live captions on Meta Ray-Ban Display https://www.meta.com/help/ai-glasses/23879220601763496/

And that is perfectly possible. The camera is not neccesary for that

Isn't it though? That's how augmented reality worked back in the day. Like, I get not recording to video but, yeah, the point of having a HUD is that it adds to the things I can already look at with my eyeballs by tracking stuff in real-time with the camera.

It's not. There's plenty of devices nowadays that use transparent screens in the glasses. The Meta glasses do actually use this method, the camera is for the recording features and the AI features, not for making the hud actually work.

The Hacksmith made a set of Fallout PowerArmor that used AR glasses that do not have cameras for the HUD (Granted, his HUD did end up having ACCESS to cameras, but the cameras were not required for the hud to work, only for features like the zoom cam, or thermals)

I'm just thinking for everyday use irl, like barcode scanning, or quick event lookups if you see a poster on the street, you'd still need a camera in there taking still images unless you already have an inbuilt system beforehand. Like barcodes could be read without a camera if you have a dedicated scanner in the glasses, or similarly put QR codes onto the event poster, but otherwise you gotta look it up the old-fashioned way.

Barcodes I don't really see a reason for, which normal person needs a barcode scanner?

As for the other stuff, unfortunately the assholes ruin it. Best that would be possible would be AI in the glasses that you ask about the event, but that comes with it's own issues

Many (most?) stores have removed the scanners that told you the prices of items. I've been having to download apps or go on websites to check prices several times a month for years.

I wish this feature didn't seem like it would actually be useful to me, but it kind of does, if only because of enshittification. That's late-stage capitalism for you, I guess

Well, that augmented reality would mean you would just have screens over your eyes, like the vr glasses coming out.
