Monthly Hobbies Thread!

Morning gang!

This is the place to discuss all your weird and wonderful hobbies, and find likeminded individuals into your weird shit. Use this as an opportunity to talk about the stuff you're into (SFW, please).

Here's a few things to get you started:

  • What have you done in the last month or so?
  • Got any big things on the horizon in your hobby?
  • Does your hobby have a subreddit you can share?
  • What's the best thing about your hobby?

Hey CasualUK. 16 years ago I've left my small Baltic home country to pursue a better life. Today I express my gratitude to the country that gave me all the opportunities by becoming a part of it. Just wanted to share my little achievement with you lot.

Evri are trialling delivery robots and, as you might expect from this brand, they are laughably terrible.

Three years ago, I suggested to CasualUKers that Premier Inn change their tagline to "You know what you're getting" - I just saw it came true and I'm delighted

Let's try that again, shall we, using my words this time.

Has anyone had a similar experience of foresight? Or am I just feeling great about stating the bloody obvious?

A bit silly but I'm more smug than I have any right to be!

I've been looking at solar quotes and a lot seem to use the same set of aerial\satellite photos to identify the house and roof.

My photo shows both that my hedge is perfectly cut, the back garden grass has lovely stripes and the outdoor furniture is nice and neat. Any other week and it would have looked it's usual half-arsed mess but whoever surveyed the area did it at exactly the right time.

I doubt anyone else will ever see it but it made me happy.

An unexploded World War Two bomb that forced the evacuation of about 2,000 people from their homes in Falmouth has been safely detonated at sea. The suspected 250lb American air-dropped bomb was discovered at Falmouth Docks on 21 September.

The controlled explosion created a small plume of water, bringing the operation to a successful conclusion. [BBC]

Quick quiz... United Kingdom: Town or City?

Just sharing one other quiz I've made if it's alright.

For this, it's simply a matter of clicking/tapping on either "Town" or "City" for each place that is given. There are 20 of each to try and get right, and the order changes each time.

I was in my local charity shop and I found this, I couldn't believe it as it was £5! Looking online it could be worth anything from £100 to £350. The last picture has a note, taped to the inside of a draw and it made it far too precious to sell off, at any price.

Has anyone lost a knitted pumpkin?

Travelling down the A46 Leicester bound, around a mile from Bingham interchange I saw a pumpkin on the grass verge, thought it was a bit odd then about a second later I saw a large ball of wool. I did think the pumpkin looked a bit odd, then, about 5 seconds later I saw another one.

Now either I’m going mad or someone has lost/ditched a couple of knitted pumpkins, so if you have or know a reason why they’re there, please do tell, I’m wondering if I’ve missed out on an Insta-FaceTok thing, like the letter box hats.

The high street thrives.... (in some places!)

I've recently retired and do a lot of travelling around the UK visiting places of interest.

It struck me that whilst there are many declining high street scenes and town centres... There are also many doing very well - in that I mean a good mix of independent shops and busy with the locals actually using them. Good pedestrian level centres that have grown organically and somehow work well together.

On a recent visit to Kenilworth Castle it struck me what a terrific high street scene there was.

Do you know of similar 'vibrant' town centres / high streets in your region?

It would make a change to celebrate some of the successful ones as we are all to used to hearing of the declining ones.

Going to rehab - need some support

Hi everyone, as the title says I’m going to rehab on Friday because I’ve let alcohol torpedo my life and I want to gain back some control. I know I’m very privileged to be in a position where I can pay for this otherwise I’m well aware I’d probably be sleeping on the streets. Naturally, I’m extremely ashamed about all of this and can’t help but feel embarrassed, it’s a tough thing to have to open up about. If anyone has been in my situation and has any nice stories or words of encouragement I’d very much welcome them right now!!! Thank you

Update: Guys thank you so much, I’ve read all of your lovely comments and I feel a lot better now. Appreciate every one of you who has taken the time to offer words of encouragement. Sorry for not replying to anyone, it’s all a bit overwhelming right now I won’t lie, but please know I’ve seen them all and thank you for sharing very personal stories about you/your loved ones

Now I know what happens if you lose your passport abroad…

Post image

So I got to the border to leave Denmark and my passport wasn’t in my bag. Turns out, even if you ask nicely, they won’t let you through! Must have been stolen from my bag on public transport.

I eventually figured out how to leave Billund airport (it’s surprisingly hard to get out if you’ve already gone through security).

I applied online for an emergency passport. Two working days lead time and the British Embassy in Copenhagen only work Monday - Friday 9-5. My first attempt was rejected because I used my old passport photo (I’ve not aged that much in 18 months!). Eventually I was given an appointment to collect it from the embassy. You’re not actually allowed inside the embasssy, so you’re given it by the guy at the entrance security gate. Like a bureaucracy drive through.

The Emergency Passport is this rather fetching azure shade of blue. Works like a normal passport, but it’s only valid for one journey and at Heathrow the Immigration Officer took it off me. Although he did let me take a photo!

Finally got home 4 days late.

Then for the replacement passport applciation. The Passport Office kindly noted that 8 years ago an old cancelled passport went missing in the post so they gave me a warning that if lose it again they’ll need to interview me and only issue one with 6 months validity!

Losing your passport: would not recommend, 2/10.

…I’ve now bought myself an old person’s passport holder with space for an AirTag.

Has anyone else become a shorts "guy"?

So for the last 2 or 3 years I've just lived in several pairs of shorts no matter what the weather is like. I noticed on the school run this morning that there's a large number of people, both men and women that are in shorts. It's about 15° where I am and it's raining but still we're in shorts. So my question is has anyone else started to become the shorts guy?

Got a skip for home renovation, how do I deter opportunists dumping their trash?

Well not for me but my parents have an open, mostly empty skip on the road right now and ive heard too many skip stories to sit around and do nothing.

Any quick ideas for a non mount camera? I have an Amazon blink camera but night mode doesn't work behind glass so I probably have to dangle it a bit outside and close the window. Not to mention the quality is trash.

Right, so it's mid week. Happy hump day and all that, but why aren't you in bed? Neighbours putting their bins out keeping you awake? Kids being little shits? Working the nightshift?

Come on in for a chat.
