That dude is a real jerk. He knew it wasn’t the place and was in appropriate and now others will have to clean up after him instead of focusing on their patients.

As a dentist, he broke the fucking chair!! You can’t treat people in that room until it’s fixed. Patients now don’t get care, you can’t earn, maybe the assistant has to take time off until it’s fixed. Just unbelievable behavior. He’d never walk back in my office.

And my brother used to be a secretary for a dental office which his job also included managing finances. Everything in a dental office is absurdly expensive. Whatever you think the price is it is higher than that.

I’m a dentist. Depending on the chair and what the supplier charges for parts and labor that could be a 40000 handstand.

Which he definitely cannot afford to compensate the dentist for. I wonder what kind of recourse his dentist could take?

Small claims court which could lead to wages being garnished.

Take all his teeth

You’ve probably only got small claims court as recourse. Even if you win, you won’t see a dime. Your only hope would be that the guy has some decency in him and pays you something.

I’ve been in a dentists chair before, it’s fancy, but I did not expect $40,000 fancy.

That’s an older Adec Cascade 1040 chair. Probably cost about $40k new. Newer ones are about $60k-$70k for the whole chair. Really overpriced, but some manufactures sell their chairs short of $100k, but those ones have a lot of bells and whistles.

Does their insurance not cover things like this where a patient acts like an idiot and breaks something?

That would be an interesting claim. I would imagine there's a good chance this is covered depending on jurisdiction and the policy that was purchased of course. If they bought a decent policy I would expect the insurance company to replace the chair and damaged equipment and cover lost income (via business interuption coverage). The dentist would have to pay the deductible still and the lost income usually has a time deductible of 0-72 hours. The insurance company would them subrogate and sue the patient for reimbursement and potentially give the dentist their deductible back.

Another interesting wrinkle would be whether the patients homeowners policy includes and liability coverage that may respond.

Should be charged not just for the damage, but for the income lost until the room is operational again

And would the tool that he picked up off the floor have to be thoroughly cleaned too?

It would be sterilized anyway, even if he wasn’t being a dumbass.

Good news is, doesn't look like anything was actually broken. Might need some adjustments but the flex arms took most of the hit and swung away. Everything still looks level and nothing is drifting. You're still out thousands from shutting the chair down until I get out there and inspect it, plus the $500 service call to just look at it. But at least no parts.

Surely he would pay for the damages?

He isn’t paying for shit. His bank account has even fewer numbers than he has brain cells.

That's what insurance is ultimately for.

You’d hope but it’s hard to make people pay.

Which part of the chair is broken?

Looks fine to me.

I can’t see a difference before or after, how did he break the chair? I believe it, I just don’t see it with my untrained eye
