Have we just completely bred self control out of our species?
1.1k
u/Mythosaurus 3h ago
No, we just only recently got the capacity to film what was already happening with personal phones.

u/lego_georgetrevor 3h ago
Common answer and mostly true. But I think there is more of an incentive to go viral now that makes people more willing to do stupid ass things
121
u/bubblegumbombshell 3h ago
It’s self propagating. People have always done stupid and/or shameless things but now they can film it, share it, and get widespread attention from it.
25
u/hoax709 2h ago
We can monetize their stupidity. Before we had actors/clowns acting silly but otherwise nothing to dramatic. Then America's funniest home videos showed that you don't need much just like 30 seconds... follow the trend to Jackass/Viva la Bam/Dudesons..etc and now we're caught up to stupid tiktok trends where most of the drama is staged. I'm sure some of americas funniest home videos were too but i'd wager most were just funny moments that just happened to be caught.
If this guy pulled it off he gets clout for doing it if he fails he gets attention for failing. Any attention is good attention until the world turns on you (Ed Sheeran) even then you write a book about " how the world turned on me in 7 days" and shill a cryto coin while your in the limelight.
think about it we really did monetize stupid to the point where its a profession... look at "A simple life" or any reality TV.. we want people we can point at and say " well i'm smarter then them" .
9
u/RedOctobyr 1h ago
and say " well i'm smarter then them" .
"I'm smarter THAN them" , I believe :) Sorry, just giving you a hard time. Sadly, I think you're right, lots of stuff seems like a bit of a race to the bottom.

not everyone was an attention seeker before phones though.
That number certainly has gone up significantly
8
u/Test4Echooo 3h ago
It has and it’s gotten people killed over it. Remember when teenagers were doing all those “challenges”?

There are always challenges but with the ability to record and upload said challenges there are more engaging in said attention seeking behavior

It's because in the post-social media world, attention regardless of good or bad is now rewarded with money. In the past, if you were a dumbass in public, you'd get your ass kicked and ostracized.

What was already happening? There's no way that guy would be doing a hand stand in the dentist office if he didn't have a way to film it.
13
u/friendlier1 3h ago
It’s a funny comment, but this is just how people are and how we have always been. It’s just now we get to see because people film everything.
19
u/snapplesauce1 3h ago
Children, sure. But couldn't we agree that because of social media, viral videos, and "influencing," isn't it likely that adults are incentivized to do outrageous stuff on video for clout that they otherwise wouldn't have done?
9
u/The_Meme_Economy 2h ago
Exactly. This getting posted here is evidence that not only pulling wild stunts but having them go wrong makes money. Social media is a blight on society.

Why the FUCK would you do that?
My Dentist is super chill and nice. He gives me great treatment and sometimes gives me fillings that would cost 80€ for free. We all call us by our first name (Me, the Dentist and his Dentist Assistants) and are just vibing. I would feel so much shame if I break something at his office for the sake of goofing around for a video.
142
u/As7ro_ 3h ago
80 for a filling?!?! I just paid 400 in the U.S.
63
u/Xandaru__ 3h ago
It depends on the Filling there's a free version and one you pay 80€. Health Insurance covers it for me. Doesn't yours does it?
48
u/Aarrolyffe 3h ago
My insurance covers one cleaning and one filling per year.
16
u/Xandaru__ 3h ago
I think in my Life I paid only once my Dentist for one cleaning? And I never needed to pay my Doctor anything. Except Medications where I need to pay my Part but it's usually only 5-10€ every few months.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Aarrolyffe 3h ago
My health insurance is $150 a month, is not the top tier, and is only for me. I still pay for medicine (albeit it is heavily discounted but still more than yours depending on what it is).
→ More replies (1)15
u/Xandaru__ 3h ago
You need to pay for health insurance? It's free here. Well "free", we pay higher taxes.
→ More replies (7)5
u/thebeardedcats 41m ago
I pay $200/month. I have to pay a copay of $30-50 every time I see a doctor. Insurance doesn't cover anything until I pay $2,000 for care (this is called a deductible). Copays don't apply to the deductible. After I pay down the deductible, it's still not free, I have to pay 20% of every procedure (and the copays!). The deductible resets every year.
This is the best option my job offers. If I lose my job, I lose my health insurance. Something like 25% of my taxes are still going towards healthcare, I just don't get to use it.

In the United States, health insurance does not cover dental procedures. You have to get dental insurance for that. Both of those types of insurance are through companies who don't want you to get any work done so that they don't have to pay anything and can profit more. It's a terrible system.

Lol I'm in the US. I have dental insurance. Had my first ever filling and still had to pay $650 out of pocket, no joke. Told them in the next visit that the filling felt weird and I think it needed to be shaved down a little bit more. 2 minutes of shaving cost me another $150..not joking again! I pay $30 a month for insurance and it only covers cleanings every 6 months. US healthcare and insurance is a fucking joke.

As a dentist, he broke the fucking chair!! You can’t treat people in that room until it’s fixed. Patients now don’t get care, you can’t earn, maybe the assistant has to take time off until it’s fixed. Just unbelievable behavior. He’d never walk back in my office.

u/Lunavixen15 3h ago
Those chairs cost an average of about $30000 depending on the model. A single one of those drill handpiece lines or air/water lines (triplex) can cost well over $1000 to replace. The light reflectors are usually a couple of hundred per shield. This does not count any of the damage to handpieces or other tools, which can also run over $1000 each to replace depending on the tool.
He'd better hope nothing is actually broken
