No "trader" needs all of those screens, either. And no one buying a 5m condo going to want their lame setup.

their lame setup
Surprised how far down I had to go before someone mentioned how bad the setup is (if that's what you mean). Like, sure, many big screens, whatever.
But then they've got this tiny ikea desk with an open topped bin, a piddly little speaker off to the side, horrible cable-management, etc.
You'll need to turn around completely to see stuff on some screens, but then turn back to use your keyboard.
Pretty much zero thought actually went into this setup.

Plenty of traders who work forex along with options and futures at the same time would be able to fill those screens with relevant data. Heck a dedicated forex trader working live could fill them if they were tracking multiple exchanges.
When the time it takes to switch windows to review something could cost you more than the cost of all of those screens combined it is an easy choice to make.

Genuine question, how can this kind of trading possibly still hold up in an age where you have quantitative finance firms trading at millisecond pace? How's an extra monitor gonna help when your competition is getting limited by the speed of light

Exploiting small neiches mostly. Trades that are just overlooked by algorithms because they fall slightly outside some threshold or another. At the end of the day, if a HFT algo can make money on a trade then most of the time a trader with their eyes peeled can too, they just won't make as much.

They all do, and it almost always ends the same. When it doesn't go like that, 99.9% chance it's just luck.
Anywhere there's money, you have to compete with smart wealthy people, with how smart and / or wealthy they are scaling with how much money is involved.
And idk where there's more money than in the stock market. The sort of people you're up against are orders of magnitude better at it than you are, guaranteed. They'll gladly take your money.
22
u/CASpider Linux 14h ago
Which is why you just put your money into index funds every paycheck and leave it there for decades. Don't try to fight the professional traders, just compound those 10% average annual gains.
13
u/drake22 14h ago
That does have it's problems if everyone does it. Active traders serve an important purpose. But for almost everyone almost all the time this is the way to make the best money long-term.
Also, you aren't just fighting professional traders, but people with a shitload of money, insider traders, market manipulators, dumb money causing chaos, etc.

Can confirm. Warren Buffet quite famously put out a significant bet for any active traders to prove they beat the market over a 10 year period. Nobody claimed it.
Unless you're illegally trading on inside information, you're not going to beat the market consistently. You might get lucky sometimes, but the market will always win in the long run.

This bet is famously misunderstood. It's whether active traders could beat the market AFTER their fees. Active traders frequently beat s&p, but they charge exorbitant fees that's worse in the long run. They are also undeniably better during bear markets where they hedge.
→ More replies (2)13
u/jameshardenisjacked1 13h ago
Active traders also doesn't mean day traders, just that some guy or firm is making decisions on what to buy/sell vs like index funds that just follow the market.

I can tell you when from when I used to do it
I started with a contract that was worth $50 that turned into $3700 out of nowhere, from one day to another, like it was literally my first trade.
That was GME/GameStop
After that I went into a bender with SPY, BABA, Rivian, Tesla, SPX, NDX, XSP, etc etc etc Options Trading
When you do 1 contract and hit it good, it's like "oh this is nice, but it could be better"
When you out your paycheck and SPX gives you 4 of your paychecks in 4 minutes, it gets addicting.
It stops being addicting when you lose like 4 months in a row tho.
30k and 6 years later, I am at peace, learned a terrible but necessary lesson. I deactivated all my accounts and emailed the broker to ban me. Luckily I didn't lose my girl, as a matter of fact, she only caught me on ONE bad trade that wiped me out.
Other than that, she was curious how I took her to Greece and Spain back to back on a Military Salary, but after that one time and seeing her cry, telling in 15 days I would be paid again. I simply quick cold turkey.
Sometimes I see the Stock Market News and I WANT BACK IN but I know what will happen. If there was a broker that did ONLY Stocks and had a rule that you could sell Minimum 1 week. I would go in. Otherwise, it's a great rollercoaster but when it hits, it hits hard
15
u/Squand 12h ago
My best trade was 80k. And I had a bunch of 30k days. It's a weird feeling.
But I lost a percentage of my Capitol and I'd set a limit for . Myself to never trade again if I lost x amount.
I went a smidge over that and was like, guess I'm a gambler. This market would be so easy to trade it kills me.
But like you I quit cold turkey and won't go back on my word to myself.
The worst thing about that job is it's fucking boring to talk about. "Did you see Nvidia went up and then it went down and then it went up again. What a crazy day."
I have a couple stories from it about getting lucky with stock manipulation. But day to day I had nothing interesting to talk about ever. I was the most boring I've ever been

u/CloakerJosh 16h ago

The smart and successful ones don't risk everything. That's reckless and will end in getting liquidated. Gamblers risk everything, but gamblers are not traders.
Ask the ones who do it for a living, they'll tell you to limit each trade to 10-15% of your total capital, and size in starting with 25% of that amount, so initial trade amount is about 2.5% of your total capital. Slow and steady growth from consistency and discipline in risk management is what makes it work, but a vast majority of people who attempt it lack the discipline it takes, and succumb to greed and FOMO and other negative emotions, so a vast majority lose everything.
Also, day trading is not gambling, it's learning to read charts and price action and using probabilities in your favor to make money consistently, and yes, a very small percentage of people are able to be successful career traders. I know this, because I know a guy...
10
u/tireddesperation 14h ago
My uncle and one of my best friends are day traders. Both say essentially the same thing. Slow and steady. The uncle is mega loaded. The best friend is doing well for himself. I had two other friends and a coworker that lost everything trading and one who lost everything to crypto. Those were the gamblers.
