I always knew we could eventually slip into an authoritarian dystopia, I just never thought the people responsible would be such fucking wieners.

u/zippazappadoo 17h ago

It was the same in nazi Germany. Nothing but the biggest losers can lead a country in this direction.

156

u/UpperApe 14h ago

Kind of.

They didn't have the internet. Americans had every fucking warning sign and red flag and they ran through all of them. Because Americans just don't give a shit. All they want to do is watch tv, play with hobbies, and relax. Nobody wants to stand for their country.

One generation of cowards and illiterates to tear it all down. All of it. And now we're approaching a world war.

Because of one civilizations obsession with comfort and luxuries.

71

u/snomeister 13h ago

Internet makes it so much easier for these dorks to bad-faith their way into power. People eat up MAGA Internet propaganda like no tomorrow.

5

u/UpperApe 12h ago

MAGA isn't the problem. Every country and era has had its MAGA. There's always fucking idiots and monsters, conservatives and supremacists.

The problem is the other 2/3rds of Americans who do nothing. You've let the worst of you take power, you've let the worst of you take the wheel.

13

u/snomeister 12h ago

I'm not American and I was just giving it as an example of the current brand of American fascism. I was simply trying to say that Internet, despite having the ability to educate and unite people, has sadly provided the opposite. It's been used as a weapon that fascists use for their power.

6

u/feedmesweat 6h ago

You're not wrong but that didn't happen in a vacuum. It's not like those traits are just inherent to people born in the US. This is the result of a decades-long campaign of gutting and undermining public education, pushing nationalist and individualist propaganda, and stoking culture war bullshit to divide and distract the population.

The apathy you're highlighting is absolutely real and it was intentionally curated by the oligarch class.

7

u/cutty2k 6h ago

If anybody was confused as to what "victim blaming" looks like, it's this comment.

This has been done to Americans. This is what a trillion dollars and decades of propaganda look like. You can be angry that Americans fell for the propaganda, but you can't blame them, it's what propaganda does.

Name a fully developed nation, one fully developed nation, where the population at large has overthrown their government and capitalist overlords. Name ONE! You can't, because every other developed country on earth is America in this regard. Nationalists poised to take control in France and Germany, the echoes of brexit still haunting the UK. Where is their population? Why haven't the commoners banded together and expelled these traitors from their nations? Why is it only Americans personally and individually responsible for their government?

The entire world is fucked mate, and everyone is watching it burn. You gonna do something about it? Give up your comfort and security and family and take a rifle down to the capitol and get your fuckin head blown off? No? Much easier to point the finger at someone else on the internet. It's their problem, not yours.

2

u/Running-In-The-Dark 5h ago

I'd argue China's approach shows an alternative, if not flawed, approach to reining in wealth hoarders and power grabbers.

-2

u/UpperApe 3h ago

but you can't blame them

This has to be the most pathetic response I've ever seen written by an American to justify their cowardice 🤦‍♀️

You're not victims. You had agency every step of the way. Your government was begging you to get involved and you all sat at home fingering yourself and watching tv instead of standing in streets and showing up to vote.

What's happening in America has nothing to do with propaganda. Every country has propaganda. Every country has extremists and supremacists, idiots and corruption.

The difference is in most countries, the other side actually fight back. In America, everybody sits around doing fucking nothing until election time. Like it's a game. And even then most don't show up.

You aren't victims. Trump is what you deserve. The world outside of America are the victims of your cowardice, selfishness, incompetence, and delusions.

The ONLY thing you're good at is deflecting your responsibilities. As you're so clearly demonstrating lol

3

u/StrawSummer 2h ago

The propaganda is so effective there are MAGA trump supporters in other countries. Regardless, whether or not we manage to correct course, I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to show us how your country fights back against billions of dollars of focused propaganda on your whole unshakably intelligent logical citizens.

You know, because as Americans, we're definitely just an anomaly. Y'all are so much better than us, this could never happen to you.

Right?

2

u/SlickAsEggs 1h ago

What country are you from?

1

u/NewHouseWithPool 5h ago

People need to watch the 'Bad Faith' documentary.

1

u/missginski 5h ago

I can’t even look at Facebook for this reason

56

u/Fa1nan 12h ago

Germans also had every fucking warning sign. The pencil mustache guy wrote a fucking book on what he was going to do, had been to prison already for a coup attempt, and brownshirts were wildly known to roam the streets and beat up social democrats.

People voted for them anyway.

1

u/whatsaphoto 6h ago edited 6h ago

That's a bit disingenuous though. There were many Germans at the time who vehemently disagreed with Hitler. The Reich coming directly after the Weimar, a time of actually stupendous liberalism and progressivism among middle and upper classes was no coincidence, and his rise in the late 20s and 30s left a good chunk of the population feeling the same kind of whiplash that we've felt over the past decade.

Just like now though, there were millions of people who were simply in no position to do much about it considering we have lives and livelihoods to uphold on our own. ICE is terrifying neighborhoods, yes, but as of right now they aren't indiscriminately firebombing those same neighborhoods.

5

u/Zeminan 5h ago

I’m confused what in the response you found disingenuous from your reply. You’ve just described how the events in Germany mirror quite well what’s happening in the US, which was the argument in this thread: whether “Americans not giving a shit” also mirrors 1920/30s Germany, and whether the internet has increased moral responsibility in one’s response to the rise of fascism - I’d definitely disagree with that premise, the same id disagree with “Germans had every warning sign”, but I don’t think you can have one or the other.

Either “Americans don’t give a shit” and “Germans had every warning sign” are both disingenuous, in which case it seems like you’ve argued in favor of that response’s point, or neither are, which I don’t think anyone here believes.

0

u/whatsaphoto 4h ago

It's disingenuous to say "Hitler wrote a book, how could they have voted for him?"

There were many factors outside of him writing the book that ensured his success, namely the fact that voting very literally did not matter by the time the far right took power in the Reichstag.

2

u/Fa1nan 1h ago

Reducing my comment within the context of this thread and what should be common historic knowledge to Hitler-wrote-a-book is what’s disingenuous.

I don‘t know about you, but I am German. This stuff has been rammed down my throat every single school year. The average voter absolutely knew what voting for the NSDAP meant, and they either thought that they wouldn’t actually pull through on this bad stuff but do all the good stuff they promised or they wanted them to do the bad stuff. I am seeing this same stance among MAGA.

1

u/TheDragonslayr 5h ago

If this is really mirroring 1930's Germany then every American who sees through the BS needs to leave asap or start preparing resistance groups. By staying in the US they are indirectly supporting this government through their taxes, spending and skills. The weaker the US becomes before things really get bad the better the outcome for everyone.

2

u/whatsaphoto 3h ago

By staying in the US they are indirectly supporting this government through their taxes, spending and skills.

I swear, I need a command prompt or something for this argument. What are we supposed to do, uproot our lives en masse? Do you realize just how much time and money it costs to move an entire family outside the country?

1

u/TheDragonslayr 2h ago

YES! Leave before things actually get bad. Because from all the signs I can see, it's only going to get worse for the average American. You might even improve your life in your new country. I can't promise you that the time and money will be worth it, but getting away from Trump and the chaos he brings is a good reason. There are currently trade agreements (ex. CUSMA) that america has with other countries that make it much easier to get work visas. If Trump completely rips up those agreements it will be much harder for you to leave the US and find work. This is also the easy option compared to living in a collapsing country long term.

2

u/mofojr 2h ago

Except those agreements are for certain occupations ONLY. Not in one and you’re fucked.

1

u/TheDragonslayr 2h ago

What is your profession? You might be surprised what is available.

u/mofojr 2h ago

Or how impossible it is!? Yes it’s tough to relocate just like in the 30s. But unlike then, there is no promising country that is willing to accept migrants or refugees. Germans could easily make it to America with a small bag. Now? Try going to Europe Asia South America Australia. Everyone is afraid of the “other” right now so it is IMPOSSIBLE to emigrate

1

u/Aureliamnissan 3h ago

sudo mv /home/whatsapotato /mnt/Europe

2

u/TheDragonslayr 2h ago

Sorry could you explain?

•

u/Aureliamnissan 50m ago

sudo mv /home/whatsapotato /mnt/Europe

For a Linux system in the terminal this command does the following:

sudo: superuser do

mv: move [target location] [destination]

The /home/whatsapotato is a play on your username with the default directory of a user’s home folder on a Linux system, while /mnt/ is a typical directory for an external drive. In this case a drive labelled “Europe”.

So it moves your entire home directory to the external drive with root permissions (root being effectively God tier authority).

Actually, because I forgot the last /after Europe (/mnt/Europe vs /mnt/Europe/, it would probably try to rename the drive with your username).

u/itsr1co 10h ago

Well the internet is the problem, if I think the Earth is flat, all I have to do is spend 5 minutes looking for flat Earth communities and I'm set. I have immediate, 24/7 access to people who share my views, I can comment about my views and be rewarded, I can share my negative experiences with people putting me down and receive support. My Facebook that I only ever use to look at businesses is flooded with the pseudo Trump party of Australia, One Nation. If I shut my brain off and just engage with those posts, suddenly immigrants are the problems, suddenly I know who the enemy is, suddenly I'm surrounded by people who will feed into my ignorance and fuel the euphoria of being "right" while everyone else are scum, and more importantly, wrong.

8

u/DogDogDogDogog 13h ago

Americans are really, really stupid though.

1

u/TodayWeMake 4h ago

I think you’re underestimating how targeted the Internet really is they control all of media (billionaires) they’re force-feeding propaganda to enough people to suit their needs, and for the most part only the people that are willing to do the work to find the truth truly understand what’s going on

1

u/Schmexybro 2h ago

I see people make this bad faith argument EVERY TIME something like this posted. What CAN we do? What can a normal 40 hour a week working person with a family do? We can't exactly get a gun, camp out on the grassy knoll and do the deed. Other than Vote, protest, and call our Congressman and senators what can we do? We cant lose our jobs because then our family suffers. Until the economy gets so bad that there are mass lay offs or unemployment the average person cant camp out infront of the Whitehouse for months at a time.

1

u/UpperApe 2h ago
  • protest after work and on weekends. You don't have to lose your jobs.

  • protest peacefully. You don't have to shoot or kill anyone, or risk your lives.

  • boycott luxuries and conveniences like Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, etc. You don't have to sacrifice any necessities or starve your children.

Etc etc.

There's lots you can do. But we both know this conversation will go nowhere.

You'll say "protesting doesn't work when they don't listen!", I call you an idiot for not knowing how protesting actually works and pointing out historic and recent examples (Trump's first term even) when protesting had a direct impact on providing the political leverage for judicial consequences. You'll say "it's different this time!" even though it isn't, and I'll point out that MAGA secured its power by doing exactly what you pretend doesn't work. You'll try to the play the whole "Trump WANTS us to protest so he can declare Martial Law!" and I'll call you the stupidest person in this thread.

We both know where this goes. And it doesn't matter. Because you just don't give shit.

You just want to finger yourself and watch tv. If any of you actually gave a shit, you wouldn't need to be educated on democracy 101.

1

u/Schmexybro 2h ago

Did you just skim my question? I literally had protest in my question.

I think you are projecting a little bit here and I feel sorry for you. Almost every day there are both local and national protests they just arent getting coverage, why? Im sure you can guess why.

As far as calling me an idiot that's a bit un called for. You are doing a great job of pushing fence sitters away with an attitude like that.

And before you attack me again. I do call my representatives, I have voted in every election both national and local, I do go to protests yet people like you always scream "you aren't doing enough!" And when someone is doing what you say they are just "Fingering themselves and watching TV."

I dont know what is going on in your life, but I hope things turn around for you.

1

u/UpperApe 2h ago

Lol no, you don't.

Because anyone who does protest and boycott and call their reps and engage with politics is furious at those who don't. The numbers aren't with us and we're angry about that. There is simply no way you'd be offended on their account.

The last thing you'd be shouting about is comments calling those folk out, screaming how "it doesn't include YOU!".

Lol you clowns love taking credit for shit you don't do, huh?

1

u/Schmexybro 2h ago

Brother who hurt you? Do you need a hug? That is a lot of projecting going on here.

I told you what I do. You don't have to believe me, just like I don't have to get pissed off when someone is doing the best they can within their means.

1

u/TheBigCore 6h ago edited 6h ago

Because Americans just don't give a shit. All they want to do is watch tv, play with hobbies, and relax. Nobody wants to stand for their country.

And remember, that is the same country that pounds its chest about its guns and how they'd overthrow a tyrannical government, yet when they actually do get a tyrannical government, they sit on their hands and proceed to do nothing at all to stop it.

2

u/ImpulsE69 3h ago

See, you are showing that you don't actually understand the issue. THOSE people? Are fine. Because the bad stuff happening is more direct to the 'non white males'. THAT kind of tyranny is just fine. The stuff happening to them in this scenario is very much more frog in cold water bath that is slowly heating up to boiling so they don't see it as tyrannical.

Don't forget how mad they all got when the COVID restrictions were in place. They did stuff then.

0

u/AsSubtleAsABrick 5h ago

Because Americans just don't give a shit. All they want to do is watch tv, play with hobbies, and relax. Nobody wants to stand for their country.

I don't think this is particularly new? During the Revolution wasn't it roughly 1/3 wanted independence, 1/3 wanted to stay with Britain, and 1/3 didn't give a shit either way?

-1

u/abraxsis 8h ago

Americans had every fucking warning sign and red flag

The education level of the average American makes them color blind.

Unless you happen to be a skin color other than white, then they can see that just fine.

2

u/Whatsapokemon 12h ago

"Oh, but don't you know? The SDP would have done exactly the same thing!"

59

u/-Rixi 18h ago

Its because its the biggest losers being assisted by outside/foreign powers

17

u/billybobpower 14h ago

I'm mostly surprised how obedient americans are.

3

u/Financial-Craft-1282 4h ago

Why? People have talked about this issue for longer than America has been around, but also in places that aren't America. Hell, in chapter 2 of For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan and Anselmo talk about the formerly brave Pablo who had come into taking/owning a couple of broken-down horses and became a "capitalist." The point being--if people are given just enough to have hope, they lose the desire to risk their lives fighting. Which I don't think we need a book to tell us. People are trying to survive.

This isn't Americans, as much as you want it to be. It's all of us.

25

u/Hammerhil 18h ago

I think I'm going to pay Cyberpunk 2077 again, it's not a game, it's a fortune teller at this point.

5

u/JohnFish2734 17h ago

I'm legit replaying it right now since I never played the expansion. It is eerie how accurate it is

2

u/toastjam 15h ago

It might be a dystopia of sorts but I don't remember it being so overtly fascist.

1

u/wtfduud 2h ago

Good time to be replaying. 2nd season of the TV series starts soon.

2

u/88888888man 16h ago

Can’t hurt to watch Edgerunners too. Since it’s basically the most rad show I’ve seen in a long time.

5

u/phoenix14830 16h ago

You need the stupid to lead the stupid and the evil to lead the evil.

Americans voted for the dumbest candidate ever because he said the simple and selfish things they wanted to hear. It doesn't matter how many times he deceives them, he is one of them and they know that failure happens a lot when you are stupid, you just don't think about it and when the leader says we are winning, you hear what you wanted to hear.

Check your voter registration and rally around ensuring a massive turnout on voting day, because we all know no matter how bad it gets, the Republicans always show up on voting day.

3

u/Etheo 12h ago

That's almost always the case though isn't it. They want to impose authoritarian values because they are pathetic little weiners.

2

u/feelybeurre 14h ago

Are Americans giving up on their democracy?

1

u/dbpf 9h ago

Think about the ilk being borne out of this mess.

1

u/Thesunwillbepraised 4h ago

Also, the people who are aware about what is happening, but still do shit.

0

u/fistofthefuture 17h ago

As a Democrat, I’m more pissed Biden held on instead of having a primary. We wouldn’t be in this mess

6

u/ZAlternates 13h ago

You’re more pissed at Biden than Trump? lol gtfo.

-12

u/mattrick88 16h ago

Be more dramatic dude. Did you watch the video?

4

u/Santos_L_Halper_II 16h ago

No I make a point to watch as little of these fucking wieners as I can. Shut up now.

-8

u/mattrick88 16h ago

Oh ok so you just see a headline and believe it. You are the equivalent of a MAGA for the other side, congratulations.
