Here’s an appropriate quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Protestant leader of the German resistance who died in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany, speaking about the nature of stupidity and how it’s more dangerous than evil:
“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease.
Against stupidity we are defenseless.
Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed — in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical — and when facts are irrefutable, they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack.
For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.
If we want to know how to get the better of stupidity, we must seek to understand its nature. This much is certain, that it is in essence not an intellectual defect but a human one. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid. We discover this to our surprise in particular situations. The impression one gains is not so much that stupidity is a congenital defect but that, under certain circumstances, people are made stupid or that they allow this to happen to them. We note further that people who have isolated themselves from others or who live in solitude manifest this defect less frequently than individuals or groups of people inclined or condemned to sociability. And so it would seem that stupidity is perhaps less a psychological than a sociological problem. It is a particular form of the impact of historical circumstances on human beings, a psychological concomitant of certain external conditions. Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity. It would even seem that this is virtually a sociological-psychological law. The power of the one needs the stupidity of the other. The process at work here is not that particular human capacities, for instance, the intellect, suddenly atrophy or fail. Instead, it seems that under the overwhelming impact of rising power, humans are deprived of their inner independence and, more or less consciously, give up establishing an autonomous position toward the emerging circumstances. The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn must not blind us to the fact that he is not independent. In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with him as a person, but with slogans, catchwords, and the like that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for it is this that can once and for all destroy human beings.
Yet at this very point it becomes quite clear that only an act of liberation, not instruction, can overcome stupidity. Here we must come to terms with the fact that in most cases a genuine internal liberation becomes possible only when external liberation has preceded it. Until then we must abandon all attempts to convince the stupid person. This state of affairs explains why in such circumstances our attempts to know what “the people” really think are in vain and why, under these circumstances, this question is so irrelevant for the person who is thinking and acting responsibly. The word of the Bible that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom declares that the internal liberation of human beings to live the responsible life before God is the only genuine way to overcome stupidity.
But these thoughts about stupidity also offer consolation in that they utterly forbid us to consider the majority of people to be stupid in every circumstance. It really will depend on whether those in power expect more from peoples’ stupidity than from their inner independence and wisdom.”

Bonhoeffer was an amazing man, willingly going to prision based on his beliefs. He wrote a beautiful poem to his wife, knowing that he would be killed. (Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen, erwarten wir getrost, was kommen mag.)
He did not die in a concentration camp, but was strung up like an animal on butcher’s hook, in a room designed to murder political opponents exactly like in a slaughterhouse.
Fascism is just brutal disregard for anything.
Edit: A few commentators question the validity of how Bonhoeffer was executed. You will not find any verifiable information about that, because the Nazis did not keep any documents about it, and any survivors were Nazis, who had no reason to put themselves into a bad light. You can only imply from general information, and there is plenty of proof that the cruelty was indeed ordered, and indeed by design. It is highly unlikely that Hitler's direct orders were not followed. I collected a few more reputable sources in a reply further down: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1wulrkj/comment/pd9ai2x/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I don’t think that’s accurate. Bonhoeffer was executed at Flossenbürg concentration camp on 9 April 1945. The camp memorial says he was hanged in the courtyard of the detention building. I can’t find a reliable source for the claim that he was hung from a butcher’s hook in a slaughterhouse-like room. That sounds more like a confusion with Plötzensee prison, where executions using iron hooks are actually documented.
He was an amazing person nonetheless.

I think this is an interesting frame to look at it, though. This idea that a person has (maybe willingly) given up their internal independence and signed over their speech and actions to another person... It feels very reflective of the way seemingly "smart" people sometimes fall to Trumpism. Their intellect didn't fail, but instead their will to think independently against a tide of social pressure and 'convenient opinions' like scapegoating immigrants.

There's the modern media angle of it too. Before the rise of social media and MAGA, Fox News filled this void. It seems that the odds of getting someone to give up their internal independence just through focused propaganda may be low in any given moment, but it's not zero. So simply spamming focused propaganda all over the place, and getting people to hear enough it, is enough in many cases. Bonhoeffer was one of the few who could be immersed in an environment like that and still not internally swayed by it. But most people do not have that much internal strength, and modern media provides ways to pressure that internal strength in inhumanly consistent ways.

Holy shit what a harrowing read. The parallelism of current times and nazis gets called quite often, and it kinda becomes easy to write it off, think its an overstatement, or an exaggeration. But damn if that doesnt sound right on for the situation today and describe exactly the interactions ive had repeatedly with those people. Something about history doomed to repeat it yada yada lol

The part of the parallelism that should terrify you is that he was hanged for these words and it really did take a literal liberation to fix the stupidity of the German people as he called it.

I think it all comes down to the one psychological nature of humanity that has existed since the dawn of time which is survival. Tribalism as a survival mechanism is hardwired into the DNA of all primates across the entirety of history. Every conflict that has ever occurred can be simplified into an us vs them mentality.
Just think about it for one second, if our entire primate lineage depended on tribalism for survival, there was no such thing as being woke and stepping outside of your own tribe to join another. The tribalism survival mechanism places the needs, beliefs, and survival of your own group above everything else, i.e. the objective truth, individual critical thinking, and empathy for outsiders.
This survival mechanism transcends individual intellect and status. As far as stupidity, it doesn’t take much to foster and exploit this mechanism amongst those already in your respective group. A stupid man takes advantage of stupid people in the sense that they are incapable of overcoming a caveman mentality to think for themselves and the betterment of our species as a whole. Using and exploiting this mentality for yourself and others does not require intelligence because it is our default nature that is hardwired into our DNA.
Maybe perhaps that is why being woke is heavily criticized and looked down upon by these stupid people whom need to be liberated from their caveman tribalism.

Wow, what a excellent piece of writing. Condemning but understanding. He doesn't wholesale negate an entire country or it's people. He focuses of the social and psychological roots of stupidity not the assumption that someone is inherently stupid. Many people as well as the commentors in this thread, like to falsely believe, that because they are not born in America they are somehow excused from racism, ignorance and general stupidity. That birth in another place excerpts you from it. The people blinded by the roots of stupidity are our friends and loved ones. We must not fall into the urge to condemn and belittle. It's is a strong impulse that cannot overwhelm the love we have for them. One day we may find ourselves on the other end of that weapon of hate. We are all in this and we are all part of the problem. I always remind my kids that's it's OK to explore ideas and ways of doing things as long as you act in ways that doesn't make you internally cringe and you question the actions of people around you. Someday I hope that sinks in.

Can you give us non americans a bit more context who this guy is and how did he orchestrate this divide?
703
u/karmakarmachameleon7 17h ago
He was the Speaker of the House in the '90s and basically wrote the playbook for why American politics is so aggressively divided today. Before him, the two parties in Congress generally tried to compromise, but he flipped the script by treating politics like an all-out moral war. He famously sent out memos instructing Republicans to stop talking about policy differences and start attacking Democrats personally using words like "corrupt," "sick," and "pathetic." By using live television broadcasts to blast these angry attacks straight to voters at home, he eventually helped Republicans win control of Congress for the first time in 40 years, kicking off the era of brutal gridlock and government shutdowns we're still stuck with now.

It wasn’t just him… there were Reagan-era think tanks involved that paved the way, the death of the fairness doctrine (which enabled the birth of Fox propaganda, and other morally-bankrupt strategists like Roger Stone that were cutthroat cheaters, and regulatory capture, and Supreme Court decisions (e.g., citizens united) that made corporations = people so that they could use copious amounts of money to sway elections, and then social media—which had honest-ish beginnings but the CEOs learned that they could actively contribute to the downfall of democracy in order to rise as de facto rulers of the country. I could continue, but Gingrich was just a small shit stain on the way to full-blown oligarchy/plutocracy.
→ More replies (1)73
u/PlagueOfGripes 17h ago
The jist of it is that he was speaker of the house from 95 to 99 and started the policy of "compromise is surrender." If the Republicans were outnumbered in votes, they would refuse to alter position until they got their way.
He also would regularly encourage his conservative peers to stop referring to opponents with respect and instead use evocative, emotional language and to describe opponents in terms of good and evil. Then he took these binary behaviors into TV and began platforming a stark divide between the political parties in an effort to paint votes as "all or nothing." Either you voted red 100% of the time, or you were a blood enemy.
American politicians used to be VERY different. Basically, the entire polarized, marketed approach to appeal to emotion and religion to create tribalized voting started because of him. People like Rush Limbaugh or Bob Grant didn't help, as they were the Joe Rogan's of their day.
Although really, all of that began specifically because Reagan got rid of the FCC Fairness Doctrine, back in 1987. No one had to fairly present leveraged, informed opinions anymore, so that created a new type of hyper polarized "news" that appealed primarily to appealing to people's desire to be right, not informed. It's similar to how online infospheres don't look for nuance, only blame, because their audience wants the emotional applause and validation that they're in the right. (American culture.)

I think it's less about a coup to hold onto power (although maybe!) and might be more about just completely gutting the US's ability to project strength for its interests and its allies interests, much less defend itself domestically.
I don't think Trump's goal is to hold onto the US, I think his goal is to burn down the entire concept of the US as any sort of functional democracy on his way out the door to some remote island.

Is Newt even still alive?
And nobody, I mean nobody, wants Elon Musk leading any part of the US government ever again, much less the military.
Was Hegseth very drunk, or did he just pick the two guys with the weirdest first names?
Those are two guys with ZERO military qualifications.

What 90 percent of reddit doesn't know it's that the whole premise of shock politics started with Newt Gingrinch. He fostered the ideas that took hold many years later. His base premises were. He admits it years later.
1) Tell as many outrageous lies as you can get recognized for. Doesn't matter if true or not. For the 10 million that heard it and believe it there may be less than 1 million hear you say you were wrong or where a news agency proves it wrong.
2) Get in front of many cameras as you can to spread your misinformation. All the time. More media? More popularity.
This all led to lawmakers that refuse to reach across the isle. Why be peaceful? Why have decorum? BORING!
This led to Taylor, Bobert, Trump ect.
Shocking sells and gets votes.
Go ahead! Be a Nazi! Be a antisemitic! Be a bigot! Tell people the others want to destroy it all and murder you...
Had a coworker come in one day with all his guns in the truck. He said liberals were roaming NC and killing people... This was in 2013... People been stupid for years .

Americans need to stop paying taxes. Your government is no longer your government.

u/Dchama86 15h ago
That would require class solidarity. Something Americans are deathly allergic to.

Talk about a nightmare blunt rotation.

I always look at the US and fear aus will go down the same route because we have a bunch of cnts thinking cultural war is important than everything else.
And these politicians will sell the country to billionaires to make a some bucks.

So what you’re telling me is that USA’s military is the weakest and most divided it’s ever been in modern times. We are most certainly at our most vulnerable point in modern history. This drunk just lost a war after changing the name to department of war, so he calls in Elon Musk? Put Prison Pete in Gen Pop already. November can’t come soon enough!

So, basically, Hegseth is too inept to lead the military on his own that he’s enlisting the help of an oligarch and a geriatric douche canoe. We can’t be serious.
