A whole country trying to please their crazy, insane dictator, just so they can live another day. I can’t even imagine what fear they have to experience every single day.
Imo, the spookiest part of modern regimes (and historical) is mostly the social pressure of the masses as a whole
There aren’t really armies with enough willpower to take insurgencies that don’t want to be taken, but it’s for sure going to be a witch hunt if you break a superstition or the neighborhood sells you out
Oh sure, he famously didn't work with the opposition party or keep other party members in cabinet positions to better run the middle east wars he inherited.
Over here the regimens lap dogs get new cars, a slight increase in pay and a meaningless promotion... It is disgusting... They just worry about them selves and their families.
Of course, it is not as bad as North Korea, those people live in hell...
It sounds very unlikely. And even if it were true, after the shit NK has been through, I’d give it a free pass on pretty much anything short of genocide
You will not find kindness defending this point around here, unfortunately. Reddit liberals would rather feel morally superior dunking on the regime of a country that was bombed to damn near mental oblivion and defended their territory against multiple invaders.
Yes the DPRK has a history of violent reprisal and repressing individual rights, severely.
They literally could not kill everyone the western world acts like they could, and still be growing at the rate they are. At the end of the day, it’s internalized racism and Western-exceptionalism, and the people who talk shit about the DPRK do it as a security blanket that “at least we aren’t them”.
I've read autobiographies by North Korean refugees. They had a lot of anti-US propaganda growing up. Every single bit of propaganda about the United States was factually, verifiably true.
No reason it can't be the other way around.
North Korea isn't important enough to go to the effort to make up propaganda about it any more.
Partly, but it's the culture they live in. Nobody wants to be ostracized by family, friends, school, church, clubs, bars. If they say something considered improper they get corrected, ridiculed, cut off. Like the crazy relative nobody talks to anymore or the raving lunatic in the bar.

I feel like you're viewing this with Americanized eyes.
If you were plucked out from where you are right now, and put into this environment, you'd think you were being forced to please your crazy dictator and life was a day-to-day struggle.
But if you actually consider how people live in a dictatorship, it's not coercion (it is), but it's pride. There a very careful crafting of said pride by the state, but you don't know or feel that.
Eh, I was a kid (pre-k) in the crowd for a Communist dictator. He was there just as a pic. We sang in his honor about himself and his wife. We had placards spelling his name. And you know what? We all had a blast and were so PROUD we were doing this. It was a defining event which inaugurated us being junior members in a Communist organization. We felt important.
This is what happens when there is only propaganda. And everyone is in the same boat.
The Great Auditorium, inside the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing, China is the largest theater for performing arts in the World, only second to North Korea.
It’s not so hard to imagine. Look at the way republicans gobble Trump. If the rest of us weren’t here to stand in the way our country would look a lot like NK. Fortunately Trump is at the early stages where he can only kill a few of us at the time rather than mass killings to shape the entire society the way NK has. We await to see how far our country will go down this path before the voters set things right. It’s been a long decade now of moral and civic decline among certain Americans and it won’t be easy to change their hearts and minds.
It's not hard. Just watch the current American executive branch, but pretend everyone who gets fired is also executed. Sean Spicer and Huckabee are great examples.
